November News, Events & Updates
Dear Awbrey Park Families,
Wow, I can’t believe we are already in the month of November. With that said, November is a busy month with fall conferences, health screenings, and our annual salmon release field trip for 4th grade students.
As a reminder, we have no school on Thursday and Friday this week due to a mid-term grading day and Veteran’s Day. Please be sure to see our PTO newsletter below (Awbrey Park PTO Press) for important news and updates.
As always, please don’t hesitate to call the school office if you have any question or concerns. Have a great Monday!
Sincerely,
Jared Tiecke, Principal
Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher conferences are almost here! This is a great opportunity to see how your child is doing and meet with their teacher. Conferences are scheduled for Monday, November 20th from 12:00-8:00pm and Tuesday, November 21st from 8:00-8:00pm.
There will be no school the week of conferences (November 20th-November 24th).
Conferences will be in person this year, but virtual options are also available upon request. Scheduling information will be sent to families on Monday, November 6th. If you have not had the opportunity to sign up for fall conferences, please be sure to connect with your child's teacher on available times. Thank you!
Kindergarten Hearing Screening
On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, we will be hosting a hearing screening for all Kindergarten students at Awbrey Park Elementary School. University of Oregon speech language pathologists will administer the screenings. Students who do not pass an initial screening will be re-screened at a later date. If your child does not pass a second screening, you will be notified in writing, in which case a professional exam may be suggested. Students already identified as having a hearing loss will not be screened.
Parent/Guardian permission slips were sent home in Monday Mail last week. If you do not want your student to participate in the hearing screening, please complete the form below and return it to your child’s teacher by Friday, November 10th. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office at 541-790-4050.
Vision & Dental Screenings
Awbrey Park will be hosting our annual vision and dental screenings on Monday, December 11th from 8:30am-12:00pm. All K-5 students will participate in the dental screening and K-3 students will also participate in the vision screening.
The vision screening will be done by a “Spot Test” with the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation volunteers and does NOT take the place of a thorough eye examination by an eye health specialist, as serious or eye health problems can be missed. If the results of the vision screening indicate your student needs a thorough eye exam, you will be notified of results after we receive them, generally 1-2 weeks after the screening date. If your student wears glasses or contacts, please have them bring those to school and wear them for the K-3 vision screening.
Our dental screening is offered for all students. Students of parents and guardians who chose to return the Authorization for Dental hygiene Services form can receive a fluoride varnish treatment, which helps prevent cavities. These services are provided by the Community Health Centers of Lane County dental hygiene providers.
If you do not want your child to participate in the vision and/or dental screening, please contact our School Nurse, Suzie McCall at mccall_s@4j.lane.edu at least two days prior to the screening date to opt out. Thank you!

Awbrey Park Site Council
We are looking for two parent/guardian representatives to who are interested in joining our Awbrey Park site council for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years. The Awbrey Park Site Council is an elected committee of staff and parents/guardians, primarily focused on school improvement and other important school-wide initiatives. Our Site Council meets once per trimester and meetings are open to the general public.
Elected representatives will serve a two-year term and join our team which currently consists of three licensed staff, one classified staff member, and myself as the school administrator.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please email Jared Tiecke at tiecke_j@4j.lane.edu by Friday, November 17, 2023 to submit your name for consideration. Thank you!
Lost & Found
As a reminder, please encourage your child to check the Lost & Found near the cafeteria prior to Thanksgiving Break. All non-claimed items will be donated at the end of the day on Friday, December 15th.
We do our best to return items labeled with students’ names to them. If you haven’t already, please label your students’ jackets and sweatshirts/sweaters with their names. Conferences are a great time to check the Lost & Found for missing items in November. We hope to see you there!

- Walking Field Trips

These were included in Monday Mail earlier this month and can be accessed below. These permissions can be turned into classroom teachers and/or the front office when completed. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher or the office at 541-790-4050 if you have any questions.
