Straight from the Hardt
Hello Ridgeline Families-- Full disclosure… I am pretty excited about the break coming up! You know why breaks are so important? I believe that to be your best around people, it’s good to occasionally be away from people so you can allow a chance for your mind to rest. For me, I like to be in nature, the woods, or on the water. I enjoy a winter campfire on a snowy day when it’s coming straight down softly, in big flakes… When you’re in a people business, you always need to be “on”. Same is true for our teens, who put in very long days with school, activities, work, and life responsibilities. Some time for them to decompress from the school schedule is healthy. So even in the holiday hustle and bustle I hope you all find some time to slow down!
It was a fun spirit week and we enjoyed dressing up and having some fun with one another. I’m in a new setting to begin drafting my newsletter—it’s Thursday night, I enjoyed watching our Unified Bowling team compete in their final tournament of the season at Players & Spectators. It’s one of those events you find yourself just smiling from the joy our athletes display, and the power of the support they get from their teammates. Followed that up with some wrestling matches, then had to sneak into the theater early to get a seat to the sold out holiday concert. Good thing I know people!
So, while I’m waiting for the performance to start, I’m front row, in my usual seat, with my laptop drafting this email. In the front, I’m less distracted by the crowd that is frantically racing to get to their seats when the doors opened at 6:30. It wasn’t quite as bad as my first concert in high school at the arena when they opened the doors for Cinderella, Mr. Big, Warrant, and Skid Row concert! No one got pinned against the stage tonight for the holiday concert! Had the pleasure of sitting next to Elly Kirsch’s family, nice people!
I grew up in a small town, and the talent pool was fairly limited, particularly when it comes to the performing arts. So, I never cease to be impressed by our singers and musicians who are unbelievably talented! We’re fortunate to have extraordinary teachers in Mr. Parker, and Mrs. Peterson who give so much to provide opportunities for our students to continue to grow their skills.
Hopefully there aren’t too many videos floating around of our final holiday-farewell assembly at the end of the day today…always a fun time!
Enjoy the Holiday Season, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!
See you in January. –Mr. Hardt
Student Services
Sophomore or Juniors- Interested in NEWTech Skill Center?
If you have a Sophomore or Junior interested in learning more about the NEWtech Skill Center, they can sign up for a "Welcome Wednesday" visit by filling out this form
- January 17th, 2024
“Welcome Wednesdays” allow students to learn about the opportunities available at NEWTech. Students select three programs to explore during their selected “Welcome Wednesday”. Your student will spend some time learning about NEWTech and then about 30 minutes in each program, meeting with current students and instructors.
If your student signs up for a "Welcome Wednesday", please have them register for the morning visit, so they can ride our NewTech Bus with current NewTech students. They will need to be at RHS by 7:25, so they can catch bus #38 (route 226). If your student gets registered, please call the attendance line and report that your student is visiting NEWTech for periods 1-3. This will be an excused absence.
For general information about NewTech Skill Center, please visit their website at https://www.spokaneschools.org/domain/135.
If you have any questions, please have your student see their counselor!
*NewTech is a program open to Juniors and Seniors, so current Sophomores can start thinking about this as an option for their Junior year.
Celebrating Ridgeline High School Seniors
As this year’s seniors are afforded opportunities for the next steps in their educational/career journeys, Mr. Spraggins would like to celebrate them! If you have a current senior who has applied and been admitted to a college, university, and/or trade school, please encourage your student to take a moment and share with Mr. Spraggins a copy or screenshot of the admit letter/communication for each of the schools to which the student has been admitted. Similarly, if your senior has chosen to serve our country by enlisting in a military branch, please share with Mr. Spraggins confirmation of your student’s enlistment. As Mr. Spraggins collects these notifications, he will keep a running list of where RHS students have been admitted/enlisted, displaying these accomplishments on our building television displays throughout the application season!
Interested in $40,000.00 for your student’s college education?...
Of course, most of us would happily answer "yes" to this question! If so, I encourage you to have your student(s) access the Google Classroom post about Big Future Scholarships Mr. Spraggins added earlier this week. The qualification process is ridiculously EASY, so don’t wait! Of course, there is no guarantee of winning, but one thing is for certain: nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): The Latest…
In 2020, the federal government passed the FAFSA Simplification Act, which, in a nutshell, led to the form’s shortening, as well as increased accessibility. Additionally, a number of enhancements and process changes are currently in the implementation phase. Among other things for filers, this means the form availability has been delayed until Sunday, December 31. Accordingly, Sunday, December 31, will be the first time filers will be able to complete either the FAFSA or the WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid, which is intended for undocumented students). The FAFSA has become a far simpler form to navigate and file since the days of paper and pencil, but there are often detailed questions and/or very individualized family circumstances that result in the need for additional guidance. Fortunately, Spokane Teachers Credit Union has proven a ready and willing partner for CVSD families, having trained staff at many of its branches to help guide those who need it through the filing process—no STCU membership necessary! To access the schedule of FAFSA/WASFA assistance dates, times, and branch locations, please access the this link.
Health Sciences Career Fair
the Central Valley, East Valley, West Valley, and Freeman school districts will host a Health Sciences Career Fair at the HUB on Wednesday, January 24. Ms. Fuller and Mr. Spraggins will take a busload of 50 juniors and seniors to this fair on the morning of January 24. In a nutshell, participating students will go to three sessions: two educational pathway sessions and one hands-on, fair style session with local healthcare practitioners. If you have a junior or senior who is interested, please encourage them to use the QR code in the flyer below to access the registration form. Students MUST complete the registration form NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3. Please direct any questions to Mr. Spraggins.
Each summer on the University of Washington, Seattle campus, the Do-It Scholars Program (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) hosts a no-cost capstone program for students with disabilities. The program “serves to increase the participation of individuals with disabilities in challenging programs and careers,” focusing on high school sophomores and juniors with an aptitude for and interest in attending college. To learn more about the Do-It Program and the application process, please visit the website. The priority application deadline for the summer 2023 program is January 30, 2024.
