Mission Elementary
Riding the Wave of Excellence!
September 24, 2023
Dear Mission Families,
As the fall season began, so did several ways students and families can engage and support school activities. Thanks to our Community School Grant, students enjoyed a week of organized games during lunch recess and soon we'll also have opportunities for students to participate in an Art History Club! We are grateful for our Community School Grant and the resources Ms. Rothenburger brings to Mission!
We held our first ELAC and PTO meeting this week. We are excited about the plans for this year's family events and fundraisers. Our first fundraiser will take place at McDonald's on 137 Canyon Dr on Wednesday, October 4 from 3:30-6:30pm. Bring the family and enjoy watching Mission staff members work as McDonald associates for a few hours.
Please send healthy snacks to school and remind students that food may not be shared at school. Processed foods (made in a factory and sold in bags and boxes) do not have many nutrients and often have a lot of added sugar and salt. In addition, food allergies may cause students to become ill so please remind students they may not share any type of food or drink. To avoid sharing, please do not send large bags of snacks such as potato chips. Hot Cheetos or similar spicy snacks can cause stomach aches so please do not send these types of snacks to school.
Have you purchased protection for your student's device? We recommend that you purchase it prior to the deadline: September 30. 2023. Click here for more information.

Pley Sport is officially at Mission Elementary!
Pley Sport is an organization that is dedicated to providing enriched physical education to students.
This past week was the official start of Pley Sport at Mission Elementary. 1st and 2nd grade students worked on hand eye coordination and had a dodge ball tournament. While 3rd, 4th and 5th practiced ball handling and had a scrimmage soccer game. Students will get to experience a new curriculum that sparks each of their interests!
The Pley Sport schedule is:
Monday & Tuesday: Meets with 1st and 2nd Grades
Thursday & Friday: Meets with 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades
As a reminder, Pley Sports has two coaches onsite who will be able to meet with 30 students per grade level. Not every student will get to participate every day however there will be many chances throughout the school year!
See some of our fun this past week!

Start of Classroom Lessons
This past week (9/18 - 9/122) and this week (9/25 - 9/29) marked the start of classroom lessons centered around the CASEL 5 Core Competencies (Click the hyperlink to learn more about the CASEL 5 Framework).
Schools, districts, states, and others use CASEL’s Framework to:
- Foster knowledge, skills, and attitudes across five areas of social and emotional competence;
- Establish equitable learning environments and coordinate practices across four key settings that support students’ social, emotional, and academic development.
CASEL 5 Core Competencies:
Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
The first lesson focused on self-awareness.
Here are the lessons that were presented in each class:

Traffic Safety Reminders
As we fully enter into the new school year Mission Elementary would like share some traffic safety reminders to our families:
Please DRIVE SLOWLY! Children are present and are difficult to see from the driver’s perspective. There are tight corners, and blind spots that make children vulnerable. Slowing down is one of the best preventive measures.
Children should HOLD HANDS with an adult and AVOID RUNNING! Make sure that children are not leaving the front exit without a parent with them. Walk in designated, marked walkways or sidewalks when possible.
As the lot is small and does not have the capacity to accommodate all of our families, please be considerate at drop off and pick up times and limit your parking time. Remember, our front gates open at 7:45 a.m. and school begins promptly at 8:15 a.m. There is plenty of time to drop off your student.
Park in designated and appropriate areas. Parking in fire lanes or areas that are not clearly marked for parking blocks drivers view and space for navigation. It is a safety hazard that we take seriously.
Don’t block the driveway. There are other cars in-front and behind your vehicle during morning drop off. We do not want to stop the flow of traffic and recommend that drivers stay in the driver’s seat. Our staff will do our best to open the door for your student.
These rules are set in place to ensure the safety of all of our children. Slow down, be considerate, and stay safe!
