OBOB- Help Needed!
The Oregon Battle of the Books is back! The kids couldn't be more excited, but we can't host OBOB without many VOLUNTEERS. Some of you received training last week to become an OBOB Volunteer.
OBOB motivates students to broaden their reading interests, increases reading comprehension, and promotes academic excellence. There's no better way to encourage your students than to be involved yourself!
Moderators and timekeepers (volunteers) are needed for every battle. Battles run through January and February during school. They are a blast to be a part of, and the students are always super grateful.
If you are interested in volunteering or want to know more, please email SECO OBOB coordinator Chris Yule at ChrisYule@gmail.com.
You can sign up for the OBOB days if you have received training. Please Sign Up here.
To learn more about the program, head to the SATO library page - bit.ly/OBOB-SATO
Thank you all so much once again. Happy Battling.
Sato Inclement Weather Plan
When schools are on a late start or snow routes due to inclement weather, there is no bus service available to Sato. Beaverton School District has determined that when temperatures are projected to be near/at/below freezing, NW Kaiser road between NW Ernst and NW Ridgeline continues to show icy conditions when other high elevation areas do not. This stretch of the road has a hill that when icy, has led to both automobile and school bus crashes.
On these days, we need to create an alternate plan for dismissal. Please note: Dismissal will take an extended amount of time (up to an hour or more) since we are having to release students 1 by 1 to get to their guardian safely. Thank you in advance for showing grace and patience for our hardworking staff during these times.
Be sure to watch for more information during the winter months in Raccoon Register and ParentSquare as we update this plan as needed.
Bethany Library Winter Reading Challenge
Join us for our all-ages Winter Reading challenge December 1-January 15. Participants will be eligible for prizes such as gift cards to local businesses like Piccolo Mondo Toys. Help us reach our community reading goal of 10,000 hours!
Participate any of these THREE ways:
- Download the Beanstack app and track your reading on your phone or tablet.
- Track your reading on a paper log from the library. Play BINGO and color the snowflakes as you read! Return logs to Cedar Mill or Bethany Library by January 15.
Log online using Beanstack at https://librarycedarmill.beanstack.com/reader365

Equity Information
Did you know that December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities?
What is it?
International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992.
Why do we commemorate it?
Persons with disabilities have often been portrayed as un-able people. That is wrong. We learn about extraordinary individuals with disabilities all year long at Sato, and we take extra time to honor them in December.
Did you Know?
One billion people live with disabilities. Of these, 80% live in developing countries.
One in every ten children is a child with a disability.
Should I be saying “differently abled?” According to the UN, “differently abled” is problematic because we are all differently abled. Euphemisms are, in fact, a denial of reality and a way to avoid talking about disabilities. “Persons with disabilities” is a more neutral term than “differently abled”.
Neurodiversity is a way of looking at dyslexia, ADHD, autism and other learning differences and seeing not disability, but simply natural variation in the human genome.
Family discussion questions:
A common misconception is that persons with disabilities can not make their own decisions because they might make a mistake. Why do you think that is? Actually, every person has the right to make their own decisions. Why is it important to understand the truth?
What can you do to learn more about the contributions of people with disabilities?
A stereotype is an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about specific groups of people. What is one stereotype that you have heard about people with disabilities? Why is this stereotype untrue? What can you do to dispute any stereotype, including those about people with disabilities?

SECO Information
There is still time to donate to SECO's Year End Fundraiser
SECO Year End Fundraiser
Hello Sato Families!
In the next few days, your students will be coming home with a flyer for SECO’s Year End Fundraiser.
As many of you know, SECO helps fund many programs and events at Sato including OBOB, Art Lit, Popcorn Fridays, Cultural Night, field trips, PE & music equipment, teacher classroom supplies, and much more!
We are currently well below our fundraising mark for the end of 2023. With our student population growing and a few more months to go before our annual Raccoon run, to help us continue to assist the school, students, and staff we are asking families that are able and willing, to make a tax-deductible donation to SECO.
Visit our website (https://www.satocommunity.org/events/year-end-fundraiser) to make an online donation or to learn more about the impact SECO has on our school. Alternatively, checks made out to SECO can be turned in to your student’s teacher. As always, we encourage families to check with their employer about donation matching as that helps us benefit doubly from your donations.
If we reach our school-wide goal of $15,000 by December 31st, students will earn a free movie with popcorn during their lunch period!
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Thank you for your support!
