WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO DO BESIDES MY CLASSES?
All students who graduate from CTE at either the graduate or undergraduate levels must have:
- SSHS 1020
- DASA 1020
Safe Schools, Healthy Students (SSHS) and Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) are professional development workshops administered through SUNY Oswego's Division of Extended Learning in support of degrees conferred through the School of Education.
SSHS 1020 is made up of 8 workshops and is taught in an online format. It costs $200.
DASA 1020 is made up of one workshop and is taught in an online format. It costs $90.
You can register for both of these any semester - they are both offered online! They both MUST be taken before you can student teach.
NOTE: If you have already taken DASA somewhere else, you can make a copy of your certificate, write your ID number on it and send it to the Registrar. It will then be added to your degree works and fulfill the requirement for graduation. You do not have to retake it.

BEFORE YOU CAN STUDENT TEACH, you must complete 100 hours of observations (field experience) in NYS Public Schools. This is a NYSED requirement. We embed those hours into your courses with us (approx. 15 hours/course). The Clinical Practice and Partnerships Office coordinates the field experiences and every MUST fill out the information they require each semester. Attached is a link with this information; it should also have been sent via email to each of you:

- If you would like to see previous issues of this newsletter, The CTE Educator, check out our website: https://www.oswego.edu/vocational/cte-faqs (scroll to the bottom of the page)
- All email communications with SUNY faculty/staff should be done using your oswego.edu email. This is for security reasons. Please be sure to link your oswego account to whatever account you use most frequently so you do not miss important information!
- Looking for a teaching job? We highly recommend using OLAS (https://www.olasjobs.org/). Additionally, we have a listing of open teaching positions that have been sent to us directly from school districts (https://www.oswego.edu/vocational/cte-job-vacancies)
HOW TO START CLASSES:
NEW STUDENTS OR RETURNING STUDENTS -
- Our online platform for classes is BRIGHTSPACE - this is where you will find the courses you registered to take for the semester; fall classes will show up after 8/21/23. To access BRIGHTSPACE, go to: https://ww1.oswego.edu/digital-learning-environment/ and sign in using your credentials. We recommend bookmarking it on your computer.
- You will not be notified when your courses open: Check Brightspace during the week prior to classes beginning.
- Courses generally "go live" approximately a week before the official start of classes. This allows access to the courses so you can get used to working in BRIGHTSPACE and figure out what you will need to do for the semester. You are not required to be in the courses until the first day of classes, but this is an excellent opportunity to get a head-start!

An Additional Professional Opportunity for a FACS Student:
- NYSAFCSE (New York State Association of Family and Consumer Science Educators) is looking for a FACS student representative from SUNY Oswego. We received this correspondence:
"We have been discussing having a student rep for NYSAFCSE. We'd like to have someone represented from each college with a FACS program at our PD sessions and board meetings beginning this fall. The meetings will be held in Binghamton NY and will be Friday into Saturday. I have not been informed of specific dates yet. NYSAFCSE would cover the cost of the hotel and mileage for the student to be able to attend the meeting. As you know, this would be a great networking opportunity for future FACS teachers. As an association, we'd love to hear from students to see how we can better help prepare them for beginning their careers. If you have any students you think would be interested in filling this position for this upcoming fall, please let me know."
Please contact Dr. Star Matteson if you are interested: star.matteson@oswego.edu
OTHER THAN THE NORMAL, WHAT IS THE CTEP DEPARTMENT UP TO?
You can always find our department members teaching, involved in campus and school of education committees, working with student teachers and doing advisement, but we are involved in other efforts you may or may not know about. We thought we would share a couple:
- CTE Panel Discussion
In May, the Career and Technical Educator Preparation Department at SUNY Oswego held a panel discussion where CTE professionals throughout NYS spoke on supporting and sustaining CTE in NYS. Our panelists included: Mike Woods, Director of the CTE Technical Assistance Center; Quindell Williams, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems Teacher at Syracuse City School District; Jasmine Price, Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging at Syracuse City School District; Michael LaMastra, Business and Marketing Education Associate with the NYS Education Department; Terry Hughes, Cornell University Teacher Recruitment and Retention Specialist for Agriculture Education.
Participants learned best practices aimed at recruiting and retaining quality instructors and developing instructional practices. Panelists also addressed initiatives for secondary and post-secondary settings to maintain quality programs and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of CTE. We had a wonderful group of participants who asked questions and came away with helpful information.
- Bootcamp for Work Force Development
Instructor Bootcamp
In Support of Regional Workforce Capacity Building
SUNY Oswego’s Instructor Bootcamp* was created to train up to 120 professionals from high-demand career fields including construction, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing to become instructors in regional high school, community college, adult education, and apprenticeship programs. Upon successful completion of the Instructor Bootcamp, the participants will be more equipped to be employed as instructors who are needed to teach the workforce sought by semiconductor production, supply chain companies, and other related industry partners.
*Note: This Instructor Bootcamp does not lead to K-12 classroom certification.

Christina New is a graduate of Cornell University, BS; and SUNY Oswego, MSEd Business and Marketing Education in 2005; Work Based Learning Coordinator Extension 2017
Caz teacher named ‘Outstanding Business Educator’
CAZENOVIA — The Business Teachers Association of New York State (BTANYS) recently named Christina New of Cazenovia High School (CHS) as the 2022-23 Clinton A. Reed Outstanding Business Educator Award recipient. The award recognizes a business teacher who has made significant contributions to his or her school district as well as the profession of business education. New, who has been teaching in the Cazenovia Central School District (CCSD) since 2006, is the CHS Career & Technical Education (CTE) Department leader and the school’s certified Work-Based Learning (WBL) coordinator.
Through the WBL program, which New launched in 2020, eligible seniors spend part of the school week working in local businesses that align with their career interests and learning from industry mentors. During the 2022-23 school year, New also taught personal finance, leadership, accounting, entrepreneurship, and a seventh-grade business exploratory class. This coming school year, she will also offer a career and financial management class.
Throughout her time at CCSD, New has launched several new classes, district events, and programs, many of which involve collaborations with the local business community.
She introduced the Burton Street Elementary School “Dollar Dog” savings program, Shark Tank Night, the Mr. Caz pageant, the Empower “Mad City Money” financial simulation, the EVERFI financial simulation, the STEM-based extracurricular club Caz Creates, guest speakers from AmeriCU Credit Union, the middle school leadership mentoring program, and a unique partnership with Cazenovia-based landscaping company Scholars Landscaping.
Additionally, New and CTE teacher Sara McDowell started a CTE National Technical Honor Society chapter at the high school.
New trains teachers in Cazenovia and across the state on the Teach Empowered entrepreneurship curriculum and advises the CHS Youth Activation Committee, a group of students that helps market the school’s Unified Sports teams, which join students with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team to train, play together, and compete.
This coming school year, she will also be serving as co-advisor to the student-led organization Project C.A.F.E. and helping to run the Laker Locker, a student thrift store.
The educator also served on the board of the Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce, which provided students with scholarship and community service opportunities.
“Christina New is innovative, creative, proactive, and resourceful,” said CHS Principal Molly Hagan. “She is everything as a teacher that we want for our career and technical education students. Christina is a leader in the building and in the Cazenovia community. She has been instrumental in introducing new programs and courses to our CTE department. She’s an invaluable member of the Cazenovia Central School District. The best thing about Christina, however, is her love and dedication to students. She is a fun, engaging, and compassionate teacher, [and] she excels at relationships.” New, who was named the CCSD Teacher of the Year in 2021, said the most rewarding aspect of teaching business is her students. “We are a family in the business department, and seeing the students’ success even after high school is the best part of the job,” she said. “I keep in touch with a lot of the alumni through the CHS Alumni Network on LinkedIn that my classes started several years ago.” Outside the classroom, New is the BTANYS Syracuse region director and has recently become involved in legislative advocacy on behalf of BTANYS.
She said she was completely surprised and very honored by the news that the association had selected her as its Outstanding Business Educator Award recipient.
“I was notified this summer that I was nominated by a few colleagues on the state board,” she said. “I am the legislative director for NYS, and my team and I have been taking trips to DC and meeting with area legislators this summer to advocate for mandatory financial literacy in schools in NYS. We are so close to being the 24th state [to require it. It’s] super exciting.”
New will be presented her award at the BTANYS annual conference on Oct. 20, 2023, at The Century House in Latham, New York.
“Christina New has left a mark on both the district and the countless students she has guided over the years,” said CCSD Superintendent Christopher DiFulvio. “Her commitment to fostering a dynamic learning environment has empowered students to develop not only essential business skills but also a strong sense of confidence. She has exemplified the qualities of an exceptional educator. She is well respected throughout our community because of her great connection with local businesses.”
The BTANYS is a voluntary professional organization that provides advocacy, professional development, networking, and support for its members to “effectively educate today’s students for tomorrow’s global economy.”

We have received word from many of our recent graduates that they have found teaching jobs and will be starting in September! It is an exciting time to be in CTE as jobs in most areas of our profession are plentiful. As we receive information on who has begun teaching where, I would like to add it to our future newsletters. Please contact me by email if you have taken a teaching position, and where, and we will share it here! jan.woodworth@oswego.edu
