Principal's Update
As I write this, we are wrapping up the end of the semester and looking forward to next week where students will participate in J-Term. J-Term will take place January 17-19th and will be another exciting opportunity for our students to explore something different with a wide-range of activities. Some of these activities include ski & ride, pond hockey, songwriting, a look into 20th century history through film, Italian cooking, laser-cut jewelry making, animal tracking, and a study into the Cuban Missile Crisis. Every student will participate and have the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, and enjoy some great sessions led by our amazingly talented staff. A huge thank you to the community members who have helped with volunteering, providing supplies, and supporting this program!
Please take a moment to read the important information below regarding after school pick-up procedures as well as the update from the health office regarding the notable increase in illness that we are seeing at school.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Steven
Do you pick up your student after school? Please read this important update
We continue to have problems with getting our buses on to campus at the end of the day because both the parking lot entrance and Gallison Hill Rd are being blocked by cars picking up students.
When you arrive on campus, please do not block the entrance or driving lanes into the parking lot.
If you cannot pull up beside the curb (marked in green on the map), we ask that you pull into the parking lot to pick up.
The yellow areas AND Gallison Hill cannot be blocked and we asked that there is no stopping or standing in these areas.
Please pull into the parking lot and find a parking spot.
Health Office Update - Feeling under the weather? Please stay home
The health office is seeing a rise in colds, flu, Covid-19, and the norovirus. We would like to remind and encourage students and faculty to stay home when sick. We are most contagious during the first two to three days of an illness or when symptoms are at peak. You may return to school once you are without fever for greater than 24 hours and are feeling well enough to learn. If you struggle with hand hygiene or coughing into your chicken wing, we strongly encourage you to wear a mask. Our school is working hard to keep surfaces disinfected and providing ventilation in our classrooms - please do your part in keeping all of us healthy.
New England Music Festival and All State Music Festival Auditions
New England Music Festival
We are very happy to share that three U-32 students have been accepted to the New England Music Festival Orchestra: Avery Cochran (flute), Olivia Serrano (horn) and Ethan Neimark (cello). These students will represent U-32 at the New England Concert Festival in Boxborough, MA in March.
Avery's performance was picked as one of the five most outstanding (out of over a thousand students) to perform as a solo at the festival, the highest honor achievable at the New England Music Festival!
Vermont All State Music Festival Auditions this weekend
Good luck to the nine U-32 students auditioning for the Vermont All State Music Festival this Saturday at Champlain Valley Union High School: Avery Cochran, Olivia Serrano, Eliza Gilbert, Ethan Neimark, Ari Chapin, Elsie Pawul, Claire Serrano, Mayla Landis-Marinello and Amelia Garland.

In addition, Craftsbury Academy will be hosting a 6th - 12th Grade Winter Scholastic Chess Tournament on Sunday, January 28th for anyone who would like to compete before the State Tournament.
Individual and team prizes will be awarded. The registration page for both events can be found at https://vermontchess.org/.
Vermont Youth Poet Laureate opportunity
Check out this exciting opportunity for Vermont's teen poets. Sundog Poetry is launching a statewide chapter of the National Youth Poet Laureate program (remember Amanda Gorman reading poetry at the Biden inauguration in 2021? She was the NYPL at the time).

An overview of the program:
- Any Vermonter age 13 - 19 can apply (there is no cost)
- Submissions are open FEB 1 - 29 at youthlaureate.org
- The online application will ask for an attachment that includes 3 original poems
- Finalists and winner announced in April
- Winner receives $500 cash prize, invitation to regional competition, broadside letterpress printing of original poem with Ruth Stone House, workshops with some of America's leading poets (Ada Limon taught a workshop last year), and performance opportunities in Vermont.

SCHOLARSHIPS: The Next Step After Applications
It is always a good idea, after focusing on looking for and applying to colleges, that a student and family begin looking for scholarships. Scholarships can range in amounts and duration, ranging from $100 to thousands of dollars over a four year period. The important thing is to take some time to compete for scholarships.
