Anne Elise Beals, and her mentor, Dr. Stefanie Sevcik, were selected into the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) 2022-23 Scholars Transforming Through Research (STR) Program. The STR Program is an extremely competitive application-based professional development opportunity for teams consisting of a campus representative and one to two undergraduate students. These teams will participate in a 6-month program aimed at developing their communication and advocacy skills which will empower them to convey the power of the high-impact practices of undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry experience to diverse stakeholder groups.

The STR program replaces CUR's Posters on the Hill as a signature program for Undergraduate Research. Instead of one day, the STR program will take place over the course of the year. “CUR is excited to be offering a program of such critical importance to the development of civically engaged researchers, and elevates the significance of effective human engagement skills. I look forward to working with these 2022-23 STR participants during their journey and celebrating their accomplishments.” Stated Lindsay Currie, CUR’s executive officer.

These teams represent 62 institutions from 28 states and are made up of 75 Campus Representatives and 124 undergraduate researchers. Georgia College is one of three institutions in the state of Georgia. Other students and faculty accepted into the program include Smith College, Columbia University, Vanderbilt University, and Furman University. According to Jordan Cofer, "Georgia College's acceptance into this prestigious program just highlights the quality of our undergraduate research programs."

President Cathy Cox addressed the 2022-2023 GEM Class and their mentors.

Dr. Harold Mock and the Leadership program hosted the GEM Kickoff dinner. The dinner, hosted at the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta, recognized Georgia College students participating in the Georgia Educational Mentorship program. The GEM program is a partnership between Georgia College and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce to prepares the next generation of Georgia's leaders. This mentorship and leadership program matches students with senior state leaders for a yearlong partnership that creates mutual benefit between Georgia College and its partners. In addition to frequent meetings and exchanges with their mentors, students enjoy individual consultations, classroom-based learning, and statewide site visits.

The Office of First Year Experience hosted their 'Build a Pal' Event to help promote GC Journeys experiences. This year, the Office encouraged students to RSVP to reserve their bear. This year's event was another success. This event is a great social event, while also learning more about the opportunities available through the GC Journeys experience available at Georgia College.

The 2022 MURACE Symposium, held on October 17th, celebrated Undergraduate Research across the university. The symposium, hosted by the Office of Mentored Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors, featured programming for students, faculty, and staff.

Students were able to learn more about how to write an abstract, conference professionalism, and how to find a mentor. Faculty were able to learn about opportunities across the university, and to share best practices in mentoring undergraduate research. Students were also able to present their summer research.

The keynote panel, "Undergraduate Mentoring, Retention, and Student Success" featured Dr. Sabrina Hom, Dr. Winston Tripp, Dr. Holley Roberts, and Dr. Indiren Pillay shared the role that undergraduate research could play in student success.

GC Journeys is excited to offer support for GC Journeys Transformative Experiences. These mini-grants will provide funding support for supplies, etc. for individual projects, so faculty leading transformative experiences in Spring 2022 can apply. These will be decided on a rolling basis.

The National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) is accepting Abstract submissions until November 30, 2022. You can access the portal here.

NCUR is dedicated to promoting undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity in all fields of study by sponsoring an annual conference for students. This gathering of student scholars welcomes presenters from all institutions of higher learning and from all disciplines. Overall, this conference offers a unique environment for the celebration and promotion of undergraduate student achievement; provides models of exemplary research, scholarship, and creative activity; and offers student career readiness development. This year, NCUR will be held in Eau Claire, WI from April 13-15, 2023.
