FIVE BHS STUDENTS SECURE STATE DIVISION 1 RATINGS
On Saturday, March 13th, the Boone High School speech team performed virtually at State Individual Speech Contest at Johnston High School in Johnston. Seven of Boone’s fifteen performances earned the highest rating (I).
Three judges evaluated each performance awarding students a rating on a scale of 1-4. Students must receive a minimum of two one ratings in order to earn an overall rating of a 1.
Senior Carlee Carpenter earned straight I’s in Acting, and received All State honors as well. This is the second year in a row that Carlee has qualified for All State, and she has competed in both Large Group and Individual Speech all four years of high school.
Junior Logan Shearer also earned straight 1’s in Spontaneous Speaking as well as receiving All State honors. This is the first year Logan has competed in Individual Speech, and he found great success.
Sophomore Clara Carpenter earned straight 1’s in Storytelling.
The following students earned two I’s from three of their judges:
Allie Hunter (sophomore) in Acting.
Sierra Sherry (sophomore) in Poetry.
Mabel Overton (sophomore) in Original Oratory.
Evie Bell (junior) in Reviewing.
Chloey Davidson-Germain in Original Oratory.
Maverick Meimann (senior) in Poetry.
Akela Salter (senior) in Solo Musical Theatre.
Also earning a I rating from one judge were:
Collin Holman (freshman) in Improvisation Acting.
Evie Bell (Junior) in Storytelling.
Also participating at state were Chelbie Brown and Gabriel Wolf.
Last year, in March of 2020, three students received All State nominations, however, due to Covid we were unable to get a picture and recognize them. Congratulations to Sierra Sherry in Poetry, Jason Prazak in Improvisational Acting, and Carlee Carpenter in Solo Musical Theatre.
High School Students are getting into the Zone with the use of new wrist IHT Heart Rate Monitors. The monitors give students instant feedback on heart rate (how many minutes they were in their target heart), calories burned and cardiorespiratory fitness. Performance is not measured against classmates but rather on individual performance.
EDGE/EXCEL Service Day
Business partners and non-profit organizations are key to our EDGE/EXCEL authentic projects, internships, and mentorships. If you are a current EXCEL/EDGE student OR a prospective student, feel free to join us! The community has done a lot of us this year in terms of giving back and we'd like to do the same. On May 1st from 9:00-12:00, we would like to offer you the opportunity to join Mrs. Greenfield and Mrs. Hyman for an Arbor Day Celebration. We will be planting up to 150 seedling trees, educating the community on tree species, planting specifications and other science-based topics and giving away one seedling per family/individual that comes out to plant. Hours would be able to count towards NHS volunteer hours or Silver Cord Hours, plus volunteering looks really good on resumes and applications. Many of you are realizing the importance of that right now. If you are able to join us even for part of the day, please complete the following form.
