A message from the principal
Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful winter break. We were excited to welcome our students back into the building last week and are looking forward to some special things we have planned for the month of January.
January’s school wide focus is perseverance. Students are learning that perseverance is “pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles.” If you or your family has a photo that represents perseverance, please send it to DaytonEagleNews@gmail.com . We will share these photos on the monitor in our entryway. Our students love seeing photos of our Dayton Eagles.
Families can learn more about how to support conversations about perseverance with these resources:
Kindergarten Family Connection
Second Grade Family Connection
During the month of January, we are continuing to focus on kindness. During this month, we are encouraging students and staff to complete at least one random act of kindness every day for the entire month. Students can add pictures of words of their acts of kindness to our Wall of Kindness at school. We can't wait to fill this wall up with our random acts of kindness.

Art Adventures
Art Adventures is here! Art Adventures is a program that engages students with artworks from the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection and, through the support of thousands of trained school volunteers, sends visual arts into K–6 classrooms across Minnesota and beyond. The program encourages creativity, critical thinking, and global awareness through in-depth explorations of art across various cultures and time periods. Art Adventures is an opportunity for students to experience art up close and personal through reproductions, technology, and touch and feel props.
This year, we will have 6-7 parent volunteers who will come into classrooms for two 30-minute sessions on two different days and share six pieces of art. The theme this year is cultural reflections in art. We are so excited for this opportunity. Thank you parent volunteers!
January Specialists Highlights
Art
Project highlight: Fifth Grade O’Keeffe Flowers
This trimester, Fifth graders are studying and creating abstract art with Mrs. Christenson and Ms. Merrill. Abstract art does not represent things we find in the real world; rather, it is focused on expression with lines, shapes, and colors. Georgia O’Keeffe transformed flowers into beautiful works of abstract art by zooming in on their unique features and artfully blending their colors.
Core
During the month of January students are enjoying two weeks of Art Adventures during Core. Volunteers are sharing art from the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA). We encourage you to visit MIA to see the real art exhibits.
Following the presentations, we will begin our unit of coding. Grades K and 1 will use Scratch Jr. app on iPads, while 2-5 will use the web based Scratch from the M.I.T. web site, to learn block coding. Students are excited to learn coding.
Explorations
We have some exciting things happening in Explorations in the next month! Kindergarten - Geography (Maps, Physical & Human Characteristics). First grade - Economics (Cost & Benefit). Second grade - Solids and Liquids (States of Matter). Third grade - Crayfish (studying live crayfish). Fourth grade - Agriculture in MN (resources grown in MN). Fifth grade - Colonizations (New Spain, New France, & the British Colonies). Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns! Ms. Peterson & Mrs. Christenson.
Media
In January, grades K-2 will be continuing to read the Star of the North nominee books and learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. Grades 3-5 will be exploring a few different genres of books and some digital citizenship lessons. They will also learn about Martin Luther King, Jr.
Music
Fourth and fifth graders start working on playing recorders this month! More great music ahead!
PhyEd
Please remember tennis shoes!
This month in physical education, we will be working on bowling (underhand roll), overhand throw and catch, and volleying.
