TMS Parent Update September 19
Participation Responsibility Integrity Determination Effort
Principal's Message
We have recently had some bullying concerns at our site and some families have questioned our policies and procedures. While I cannot share individual information about students involved, I wanted to address this issue openly and transparently.
The safety, security, and emotional well-being of our students are of utmost importance to us at Temecula Middle School. We take all reports of bullying seriously and are committed to creating a safe and nurturing environment for every student to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
We continue to actively investigate the reported incidents and are taking appropriate disciplinary measures per TVUSD policies and Ed Code. Additionally, we are continuing the following measures in order to address and proactively prevent bullying within our school community:
Increased Supervision: We are ensuring comprehensive supervision in areas identified as potential hotspots for bullying such as hallways, bathrooms, and locker rooms. We also have ample staff support during unstructured times such as lunch and nutrition break. We are also monitoring bathrooms by having regularly scheduled safety checks throughout the day.
Education: If you see something, say something. Not only do we have anonymous reporting through Let’s Talk, we will also be discussing some of these behaviors in our intervention period. We want to ensure students know what to do if they are bullied and the consequences that come with these types of behaviors. However, this works both ways. We will continue to educate all students on appropriate behaviors under school expectations and district policies. TMS works to foster behaviors that promote its PRIDE: Participation • Responsibility • Integrity • Determination • Effort. Any behaviors that are harmful, unsafe, or hurtful are outside of this mission.
Communication with Parents: We will regularly communicate with parents about our anti-bullying education and steps to provide further security measures in our Newsletter. We also encourage parents to attend our Coffee with the Principal meetings. These dates will be sent to families very soon. I am always available to meet with parents at scheduled times if there are items that need to be discussed that are impacting the learning experiences of your students on our TMS campus.
Counseling and Support Services: Our school counselors, along with our school social worker, are available to provide emotional support, guidance, and counseling to students who may have been affected by bullying. Please note that this is not the only intervention that is provided in these cases, it is an added component intended to support each student so that they are able to access their education in ways where they feel safe and supported. Additionally, we will work closely with outside experts to address the psychological impact of bullying and implement appropriate interventions.
I urge you to have an open conversation with your child about the importance of reporting any incidents of bullying they witness or experience. It is crucial that we work together as a community to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all our students.
If you have any concerns, questions, or additional information regarding the reported incidents or suggestions to address this issue effectively, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Mr. Morton
