Human Growth and Development Parent Informational Meeting

The Human Growth and Development Parent Information meeting will be held Tuesday, March 28th at 5:15 in the Horizon Library. Learn about what topics will be covered, what will not be covered during the student lessons, preview the videos and get your questions answered.

Human Growth and Development (HG&D) lessons will be instructed to students in April or May.

Permission for the lessons was completed during the online registration process last fall through Skyward. If changes need to be made, the online form will be open in Skyward starting March 28.

We realize this has turned into a busy evening for families in 5th grade and will make this portion of the night as efficient as possible so you can enjoy the D.A.R.E. Graduation.

Math

We completed a Breakout Edu this week with our brand new class box! Our boosterthon money this year was used to create a class breakout that we can use whenever we want! The kiddos were very excited to see the final piece! Our breakout activity was called "Custodian Games" and the students needed to use their word problem and division expertise to find all the pieces to a puzzle. The puzzle was the final clue needed to break into the box! Both classes has a blast, and it was a great activity to do to lessen the stress that MAPS testing usually brings this time of year.

We took our Math MAPS test and most of our kiddos increased from the last score, which was great! I was very impressed with the improvement and growth!

Social Studies

We are starting to read chapter 4 in our social studies textbooks. This chapter is all about European influence in Wisconsin and how the fur trade occurred in our state. The kiddos were split into groups to present on a specific area of the fur trade and its pros and cons.

We will present these projects next week. I can't wait to see what they have come up with!

Language Arts from Mrs. Edwards

Reading: Last week we wrapped up our MAPS test for Language Arts. I am very proud of the students’ growth! Nice work boys and girls! We had students excel at over 20 points from the Fall test. Way to go! The students also were able to finish up their Historical Fiction Final test, wrapping up the unit. This week, the students started our new research unit. The students had to pick their topic and were given groups to work together with. Most picked a historical topic. I encouraged them to pick an event they knew little about. For example, many had the idea of the Titanic, which has been studied before 4th grade. Make sure to ask your child what they are researching. We reviewed the non-fiction text structures and key transition words to help understand how non-fiction reading can be organized.On Thursday, the students were able to participate in their FINAL debate on what the main theme to Number the Stars is. After a heated discussion, Team Bravery took home the “Main Theme Title.” There are some tough competitors in our house! We ended the week with our Book Club meeting. The students are working hard on completing their final project as they read. The discussion questions are coming with great discussion prompts. Keep up the great work boys and girls!

Writing: As if we aren’t taking enough assessments lately, the students needed to take their “pre-write” for a The Personal Essay Unit. We followed learning what a personal essay is and practiced with a partner on the thesis “I love recess...or I hate recess.” This essay is usually a little easier for the students after the Literary Essay. I look forward to seeing all of their ideas in a nice organized essay.
