Panitahi Team Term 3 Week 1-3
Puanga Week - The tamariki enjoyed moving around the different spaces to engage in a different activity for the afternoon.
We have welcomed Raewyn Kawana to Panitahi Adams. She joins us on her teaching practicum for the next 6 weeks.
Pouākai Team Term 3 Week 1-3
Puanga Celebration: Pouākai Team rounded off their learning of Matariki / Puanga with a lovely celebration with our whànau. We sang waiata, did action songs and got to participate in different activities that people around New Zealand do to celebrate the Māori New Year. We created very special origami stars with Mrs Simpson, to acknowledge the 9 Stars of Matariki / Puanga. We created lanterns with Mrs Smith, as a symbol of light and new beginnings in the Māori New Year. We learnt Poi Rākau games, which traditionally were warriors learning to battle in times of war, but now are used for fun and games. As well as creating string stars with Whaea Mel. Miss Turner, along with Mr Morgan were busy with us in our new kitchen. We made delicious Vegetable Soup and Māori Fry Bread. The Māori New Year is the time of year to harvest root vegetables for the coming months.
Mindfulness in Pouākai: Pause, Breathe, Smile is our new mantra at IPS and Pouākai Team are loving their daily mindfulness practice. We are learning to relax and be calm. Mindfulness is being aware of our emotions. Mindfulness practice is teaching us to keep your bodies calm when we are angry or sad, and feel great when we are happy and cheerful. Our favourites so far are Straight back soft belly breathing, Wishing tree imaging, Rainbow breathing, Mindfulness eating, Melting, Finger breathing and Balloon drifting.
Watch this very informative and rather passionate presentation about Sea Life by Pouākai’s Kade, Kayden and Arlo. Very wise words from these young men and their Genius Hour Passion Project. Click on the link to watch the video.
Waiongana iti Team Term 3 Weeks 1 - 3
Weeks 1-2: Over the last couple of weeks, Waiongana iti was involved in the ‘Let's go cycle’ program, Punanga week and the inter school rugby final.
During bike safety the students learnt how to use hand signals, how to care for their helmet, and bike and how to ride safely on the road. Some of our students even learnt how to ride a bike for the first time.
For Punanga week this year, the students have been involved in learning about the Matariki stars, making kites and creating their own stars. During this busy week, our year five and six inter school rugby team also won the final against Oakura. Well done and congratulations on your big win.
Week 3: This week the Waiongana iti Kapa Haka students performed at the Kindergarten down the road. The students enjoyed putting on their Kapa Haka uniforms and sang beautifully to the younger children. The younger children loved seeing the Kapa Haka students all dressed up and some of them are excited to be a part of IPS in the future.
Throughout the week, we also celebrated maths week. The students were involved in problem solving and participating in maths challenges. These challenges tested our thinking and encouraged students to collaborate with each other.
Puke Haupapa Team Term 3 Weeks 1-3
The year 7&8 Interschool Competition took place in Hawera on the 12th August and we sent 3 sports teams along to compete in the Linkhorne Cup (Rugby, Burkhart Cup (Netball) and the Large School's Football Trophy.
Football won two games, drew the third and made it to the semi final playoff. Despite a huge effort the team went down 5-1 to Mangorei School, they have a chance to playoff for 3rd/4th at a later date. Rugby won two games vs Bell Block and Mangorei however had losses to Stratford Primary and St Joseph's Hawera, narrowly missing out on the final which is to be played next week. The Netball team faced and won against Stratford, St Jospehs, Bell Block, Puketapu and Mangorei. They will now play off fof the Burkart Cup at a later date.
It was a busy day but some amazing teamwork and determination was shown over the day. Well done to everyone for participating.
