Dear Friends
January 11, 2022
Replacement levies on February 2022 ballot
At a December 8 meeting, the Snohomish School District Board of Directors adopted resolutions to place two propositions before voters on the February 8, 2022, ballot. Voters will consider two replacement levies - Educational Programs and Operations Replacement Levy and the Replacement Levy for Technology, Safety and Facility Improvements. Both levies would replace similar levies approved by voters in 2018 and are set to expire at the end of 2022.
Both the Educational Programs and Operations Replacement Levy and the Replacement Levy for Technology, Safety and Facility Improvements expire at the end of 2022.
These levies help fill the gap between what the state funds and what it really takes to provide a full and rich learning experience in safe and secure schools for Snohomish School District’s almost 9,300 students.
With costs rising in everything from heating classrooms to fueling buses to mowing the grass, that 12% gap between state funds and actual costs is expected to grow in the future. Even with the recent McCleary court decision, state funding does not cover the actual costs of helping all children learn.
We are committed to openness and transparency. Learn more about the February 8, 2022 replacement levies at our website: www.sno.wednet.edu/2022levies.
No. Property taxes may fluctuate, but the district only collects the total amount approved by voters.
Property values may rise or fall, but according to state law, schools collect no more than the total dollar amount voters approve. When property values rise then rates go down. Conversely, if property values fall then rates rise to ensure property taxpayers only contribute the total amount approved by voters.
We are committed to openness and transparency. Learn more about the February 8, 2022 replacement levies at our website: www.sno.wednet.edu/2022levies.
Proposals for both the local Educational Programs and Operations Replacement Levy and Replacement Levy for Technology, Safety and Facility Improvements will be on the February 8, 2022 ballot.
We are committed to openness and transparency. Learn more about these replacement levies on our website at www.sno.wednet.edu/2022levies.

Meet our school resource officers (SROs)!
Meet Deputy Johnson - school resource officer (SRO) at Snohomish High School
Deputy Johnson grew up in northern California and after high school spent nine years in the U.S. Army as an infantryman. He served with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office for eight years and held positions throughout the county, including the city of Snohomish, city of Sultan and in recruiting and hiring. He graduated from Washington State University and is currently in graduate school at Seattle University.
"I wanted to be an SRO to first keep people safe and help provide a safe environment that is conducive to learning," says Deputy Johnson. "Working in the school gives me the opportunity to have a positive impact on my community."
Meet Deputy Weekes - school resource officer (SRO) at Glacier Peak High School
Before arriving in Washington and serving with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Weekes previously worked with the Baltimore Police Department and served in the U.S. Army. Deputy Weekes said he wanted to become a school resource officer "to give the students what my SRO gave me, which helped me become the person I am today."
"I want to connect with your children on a positive level and help guide them on a path for success currently, and for the future," says Deputy Weekes. "I would like to help create a safe learning environment for them so they may achieve that."
January is Poverty Awareness Month
According to the 2020 Census Report, approximately 10% of households in the United States are living at or below the poverty line. In Snohomish County, the numbers are similar. On average one out of every 10 households is living in poverty.
Poverty is generally defined as a condition where the income for an individual or family fails to provide for all their basic needs. Inability to provide for basic needs can include homelessness, food insecurity, inadequate clothing and resources for inclement weather, and lack of access to transportation. Causes and impacts of poverty are complex and can include stress, anxiety, depression, withdrawal, and sense of not belonging or “fitting-in." Poverty requires awareness, conversation, and collective action to ensure efforts are initiated and maintained to support the needs of our community.
January is Poverty Awareness Month. It was first recognized in 2009 yet remains a topic which is sometimes brushed aside. In our efforts to improve awareness around diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Snohomish School District is working with community partners to improve communication around resources for our families living in poverty. If you are aware of any programs or organization currently working to support families, please reach out to our office of Equity and Inclusion. Together we can ensure that each family in our community is connected and know they belong.

For directions on how to subscribe or change your subscription preferences (for those already signed up), please click here.
- Facebook - Today, 10,000 Facebook fans receive regular district updates through our district's Facebook page - www.facebook.com/snohomishschooldistrict. - School Messenger - Our district uses the School Messenger automated system as a tool for communication with our parents, families and staff. School Messenger works with the district’s student-data system (Skyward/Family Access) to notify families and staff through phone and/or email of emergencies, critical school and district messages, school/district closures, inclement weather, attendance issues, underfunded student meal accounts and other events/activities. The overall goal of using this service is for parents and families to receive critical information about Snohomish schools - especially information that affects their children - in a timely manner. As long as we have accurate primary phone numbers and email addresses on record for our students in Skyward/Family Access, families should automatically receive these messages when they are sent out.
