VPHS Chinese Language Students Recognized
We are thrilled to announce that five of our Chinese language students from Mrs. Farley's class have won the People's Choice Award in the Cultural Impressions Event hosted by the Irvine Chinese School of South Coast Chinese Culture Center.
This initiative encouraged students to create posters on Chinese cultural themes. VPHS chose to focus on Traditional Chinese Festivals. The winning posters showcased four festival characteristics and compared customs and food between Chinese and Western cultures. Scores were determined by a combination of student and parent votes (50%) and teacher evaluations (50%).
These exceptional works were displayed at the Center's Lunar New Year Carnival on February 10-11. Let's celebrate these students’ success in promoting cultural awareness and artistic expression within our school community.
People's Choice Award Winners:
From left to right: Jordan Lui (Chinese Culture and Society), Jovana Mortazavian (Chinese IV), Nathan Long (Chinese III), Ginny Khaing (Chinese III), and Jackie He (Chinese III).
VPHS Scholars with Distinction Program
Parents of 11th grade Spartans,
I am excited to announce the Villa Park High School, Scholars with Distinction Program in which we recognize any student that meets or exceeds standards in both English Langrage Arts and in Math on the SBAC test. SBAC or, Smarter Balanced Assessment, is the standardized assessment that all 11th grade students take in the spring. At Villa Park, we use SBAC data to award students that pass both English and Math portions of the test as Scholars with Distinction. Every Scholar with Distinction will be given a cord to wear at graduation and will receive special recognition when they are seniors. In 2022-2023, 124 students earned this recognition.
SBAC testing will start April 9th. Please be sure to let your student know that they have an opportunity to receive special recognition as a Scholar with Distinction and they need to give maximum effort. If you have any questions, please feel free email or contact your administration team.

Spartan Friendship Spirit Week Recap
To celebrate valentines week, Villa Park High School’s Associated Student Body held a Spartan Friendship Spirit Week to celebrate friendship on campus. Students were asked to wear a certain attire each day, and had the opportunity to participate in spirit-themed activities.
Monday: Love your school! (VP attire); T-Shirt Toss in the breezeway at Nutrition
Tuesday: Love to be Comfy! (Wear Pajamas); “Shell Game” - Guessing which cup the object is under
Wednesday: Valentines day, wear pink!; Valentine gift giveaway
Thursday: Love and Peace (wear Tie-Dye); Love Me Some Lunch Club Food Fundraiser
Throughout the week, students also had the opportunity to participate in a “dunk scavenger hunt”. Over 100 rubber duckies were placed sporadically on campus, and students searched for them in hopes of receiving a prize. The competition ended Thursday, and whoever found the most rubber duckies were awarded a candy gift.
Students this week also had the opportunity to put up heart-shaped sticky notes on a “Love Wall” in the breezeway. On the heart-shaped sticky notes, students wrote what they loved; ranging from family, food, or their partners.

John Carcich-Math Teacher & Aquatics Coach
Written by Alexander Tran
Graduating from Villa Park High School in 1986, Coach Carcich has a longstanding athletic history here at VP. While attending Villa Park High School, Coach Carcich was a lettered aquatic athlete in both Water Polo and Swimming. He would continue his passion for aquatics at Loyola Marymount University, where he played D1 Men’s Water Polo. At Loyola Marymount University, Coach Carcich majored in Business; a testament to his current position as a math teacher. Besides his 29 years of educational service, Coach Carcich is also Villa Park High School’s head aquatics coach, which includes our Boys and Girls Water Polo; and Boys and Girls Swim. Under his tenure as head coach, the Orange County Register would dub Villa Park High School’s aquatic program as a “perennial power”. Looking back at his educational and athletic contributions to Villa Park High School, Coach Carcich has long believed that seeing scholar athletes succeed and helping them achieve their goals is the most pertinent part of his position. Coach Carcich is also an avid outdoorsman, who enjoys the beach and the mountains. When he’s not playing or coaching aquatic sports, Coach Carcich is probably watching his favorite baseball teams: the Angels and Dodgers.

Mr. McCuiston’s love for athletics would continue to this day, where he currently coaches both youth football and baseball. Throughout his career, Mr. McCuiston has always believed that it was the students and their campus activities that he loves most about his job.
