School District 57
From the Desk of the Superintendent

June 17, 2023
Dear District 57 Families,
I hope you and your family are having a wonderful summer so far!
On Thursday night’s Board of Education Meeting, Coach Steve Shaffer recognized the incredible achievements of the Lincoln Middle School Track & Field State Qualifiers. Out on the track, these student-athletes embody the collaborative, resilient spirit we strive for in the classroom. What a treat to be able to listen to Coach Shaffer boast about them reaching personal bests and representing District 57 so honorably!
One of the most important and exciting topics presented at the Board Meeting was the proposed 2023-2028 District 57 Strategic Plan. A little less than one year ago, the district began the important work of creating a new Strategic Plan to serve as our guiding light over the next half-decade. You can read all about the Strategic Plan process here. This proposed plan was the culmination of a large, collective effort on behalf of district staff, students, parents/guardians, alumni, and community partners. We are certain this plan represents a wide range of stakeholder voices and will provide impactful benefits for our student population. The School Board will take formal action on the proposed 2023-2028 Strategic Plan at the July 17 Board Meeting.
Sara Tyburski, Director of Student Services, presented her report to the Board for its annual review of Board Policy 7:180, Prevention of and Response to Bullying, Intimidation, and Harassment. This presentation included a report on District 57’s 2022-2023 victimization data, information that captures the percentage of students by grade who reported harm done to them. While this report shows a low incidence of victimization in District 57, we continue to implement a curriculum focused on empathy and work to equip our staff with the skills necessary to help prevent, moderate, and report bullying behaviors.
Jason Kaiz, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, gave the Board an update on the numerous summer projects occurring in the district, including many security upgrades to all of the schools’ buildings that resolve findings of a recent security audit, as well as upgrades to energy-efficient LED lighting through a Commonwealth Edison Company rebate program that will cost the District nothing. Mr. Kaiz also detailed work to be completed in the 2023-2024 school year, reviewed the new copier lease with Canon Solutions America, and provided a Lions Park Development update.
Lastly, Karen Schwartzwald, Director of Human Resources, updated the Board on a few staffing plan changes for the coming school year. These changes highlight the need for additional multilingual services support and special education staffing, as well as a request for a new Assistant Director of Professional Learning to develop and implement professional learning for district staff, among other important duties.
Thank you for taking the time to keep on top of all our district’s efforts. Have a wonderful June!
In the spirit of education,
Dr. Mary Gorr, Superintendent
