J.C. Magill's Parent Newsletter - August 2022
A Message From Our Principal, Dr. Merisme
We have had a successful opening to our school year. Our students have been so excited to be back in school. There's nothing better than seeing their smiling faces in our halls.
This year our theme is "SOARING Towards Excellence." We are anticipating a great year where students feel they belong and are happy to be at school. Our teachers are collaborating to ensure our students are involved in rigorous academic activities as well as social and emotional learning activities.
I believe that families are our partners in education. Our faculty looks forward to engaging with you throughout the year in a variety of ways that will strengthen the home-school connection. Look out for information regarding parent workshops, Literacy Night, STEAM Night, Cultural Heritage Festival, Dances, Fall Festival, and more.
It is very important to ensure your children are in school every day on time. The doors open at 8:20 and students are considered late for school at 8:50. I begin morning announcements at 8:50 and instruction begins at 9:00. During the morning announcements, our students receive school news, character education lessons, a daily affirmation, and a review of our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports expectations. I want all my students to be in school to receive this important information.
Please remember that students are involved in instruction until 3:15 and begin dismissal at 3:20. Kindly refrain from checking your students out of school unless there is an emergency or they have an appointment. Parents cannot check students out of school after 2:30 pm. I want students to maximize their learning time as every minute in school counts.
Please join us for a PTA meeting on August 24 at 5:00. Following the PTA meeting, we will have our Curriculum Night which will begin at 6:00. At this time, you will have an opportunity to learn about what your scholar is learning this year. Let's work together to help your students have a great year!
Yours in partnership,
Dr. Guerlène Merisme
Proud Principal

GCPS Updates
Gwinnett County Public Schools finds that the quickest and most effective way to resolve a concern regarding your child is by addressing it at the most direct level.
In our school district, we care about each and every student. We also believe that open and honest communication between parents and teachers is a key to student success. Thank you for partnering with your child’s teacher and school to address any concerns.
1. Teacher - First, talk to your child’s teacher at school for assistance. Most concerns are resolved at the classroom level.
2. Assistant Principal - If the concern is not resolved at the classroom level, please visit with your child’s assistant principal.
3. Principal - If working with the assistant principal does not adequately address the issue, please meet with the school principal.
4. Assistant Superintendent - If the issue persists, please call 678-301-6000, and ask to speak to the assistant superintendent who is assigned to the school your child attends.
5. Associate Superintendent's Office - If, after following steps one through four, your concern has not been resolved to your satisfaction, please contact the Associate Superintendent for School Improvement and Operations.
Lunchroom News
GCPS lunch forms are due. Please remember a new application must be submitted each school year since the previous year's application will not work. The district offers both printed and online options for completion. Each new school year brings thousands of applications for the Free and Reduced Price Meal program. Due to the number of applications received an online application turnaround time is faster. The online application is available in English and Spanish.
SY23 online applications are now available!
Due to the expiration of USDA waivers, the School Nutrition Program will now transition to pre-pandemic operations. While meals are longer available at no charge to all students, we have made a few changes to assist our students and families as we transition away from the USDA waivers.
- Breakfast
- Title 1 schools – all students will receive breakfast at no charge
- Non-Title 1 schools – Free and Reduced-Price students will receive breakfast at no charge. Students with Full Pay eligibility will be charged $1.50·
