It was quite the contrast weather-wise this weekend. We are hopeful you enjoyed the sunshine on Saturday and managed to stay dry this Sunday. Although the weather today might not be the best for biking, we wanted to take a minute to relay some safety guidelines for our bike riders and walkers. Thank you in advance to our families for helping us reinforce the following practices:

• understanding the importance of using caution and following all traffic signals

• wearing a helmet while riding a bike, skateboard or scooter

• being respectful to pedestrians while riding on the sidewalk, and

• walking bikes through crosswalks.

We are grateful for your partnership on this important issue. Last year, Washburne students worked collaboratively with Skokie students to create this bike safety pledge. Please ensure that your student follows safety guidelines when biking to school.

Our first Principal Coffee and Conversation is this Wednesday from 9-10:00am. We will be meeting at the tent located in Elm street park. We are looking forward to meeting with parents and answering questions and gathering feedback on the first few weeks of school. Thank you to the PTO for partnering with us to host this event.

Fall conferences will take place on Thursday, October 13th and Friday, October 14th. Information on signing up for conferences will be sent out by your child’s advisor the week of September 26th.

At Washburne, we will conduct MAP testing on Thursday, September 15th and Monday, September 19th. Students will be testing in the morning, and we will run a modified schedule the rest of the day. Since lunch periods will be later than usual, please have your student bring a snack to school on Thursday.

Text for Help is an anonymous reporting tool that individuals can use to report a crisis concern for another person or to seek help for themselves. It was formerly known as Text-A-Tip and is used by several surrounding New Trier Township districts.

Text for Help is connected to local municipalities and resources in order to best support the individual in crisis and keep others safe. Upon calling, users are connected with a licensed social worker within approximately 3 minutes who helps to determine the level of risk, who needs to be contacted, and how to best provide support. It's our hope that our students view this as another resource that they can trust and use when they or someone they know is in crisis to receive help and support.

Learn how to take your Broadcasting skills to the next level. As a club, we will create broadcast segments for the Washburne community. Whether you want to be in front of the camera or behind the scenes, there is a role for you! No experience is necessary! All you need is an interest and dedication to learn broadcast and video production. Come join Mr. Selgrat and the crew to build your skills using our professionally upgraded studio equipment in the Washburne TV Studio.

The CW Broadcast Club will meet Wednesdays, after school from 3:30pm - 4:30pm, September 16th, 2022 through January 25th, 2023.

Washburne Debate is back for the 2022-2023 school year!

Debate meets after school on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 pm in Maestra Falk's room (C304). This is a great opportunity for students to hone their research skills, become polished public speakers, and challenge themselves outside of the classroom. Students can compete in after-school tournaments with other New Trier feeder schools a few times throughout the year.

Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.

Inquiry and discovery are huge parts of our science classes. 8th grade science focuses on physical science, which allows students to dive into both chemistry and physics over the course of the year. This past week, students in Mr. Pappas’s 8th grade science class experimented with heating baking soda to discover what would happen. Prior to their experiments, the students created hypotheses based on their prior knowledge of boiling points of different solutions.

Kudos to Mr. Pappas and our 8th grade students for jumping into scientific inquiry.

In this section we will be shining the spotlight on our Related Studies program and all the wonderful opportunities available to our Washburne students.

8th grade French students practice introducing a friend to someone in French. This works out nicely considering there are several new students in our classes this year. 8th graders are reviewing last year’s material and will soon be learning vocabulary to shop in French.

7th grade French students quiz each other on expressions like “Est-ce que je peux aller à mon casier?”- Can I go to my locker? We do this to make sure we are maximizing French being spoken in the classroom. They are very diligent students!

District 36 has established a robust suite of assessments utilizing multiple measures to provide information on student performance. One of those tools is the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test. Fall testing will occur between September 12 - 23, 2022 with all students in Grades 3 - 8 taking one Reading Test and one Math test. Your child’s building or teacher will inform you of his or her specific testing dates.

The MAP Assessment is designed to measure a student’s achievement level at different times of the school year and compute growth over time. MAP is a computer-adaptive test, which means every student receives a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions. This provides a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student’s learning level. Fall MAP results will be sent to families on October 8th. Additional information on the MAP Assessment may be found on our district website in the Assessment Section of ITL.

At the August 16 Meeting, the School Board approved a resolution to move forward with placing the $59.4MM referendum on the November 8, 2022 ballot. If this referendum should pass, it would fund the following work at our schools:

• Updated safety components, including secure entry vestibules

• Upgraded HVAC systems to improve air quality, air flow, temperature control and energy efficiency

• Accessibility for all students, staff and visitors that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

• Electrical wiring and panel upgrades to support technology and improve energy efficiency

• Plumbing replacements to address fixtures that have reached the end of their useful life

• The addition of a multipurpose room/cafeteria at Hubbard Woods

• Removal of the temporary trailers at Crow Island and the subsequent addition of three permanent classrooms

• ​​Repurposing of the current gym to serve as a multipurpose room/cafeteria and the subsequent addition of a gym at Crow Island

• Extension of the useful life of existing facilities and proactive reduction of costly emergency repairs
