SkillsUSA District Wide Welding Competition
On 2/17 Smithfield High School hosted the SkillsUSA District Welding Competition.
Students were given a drawing and had to interpret the dimensions as well as weld symbols in order to fabricate the part and weld it correctly.
We are very proud to state that Keegan Saunders took 1st place and AIdan Miller took 3rd place at this event.

These young men did very well. Please support them as they will represent IWCS at the SkillsUSA state Welding Competition to be held 4/20/2024 at Tidewater Tech, 4535 E Princess Anne Rd Norfolk, VA, 23502.
Two SHS JROTC Cadets Place in Regional Air Rifle Competition
Two marksman from the Smithfield High School JROTC Rifle Team recently traveled to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Competition Center complex in Port Clinton, Ohio, to compete in the Army JROTC Air Rifle Northeast Regional Championships at Camp Perry. Junior Nymiar Towns and Senior Summer Fruchey placed in the top 40 in the region and top 150 in the nation. Summer placed 23rd and Nymiar placed 40th in the region. Summer placed 103rd and Nymiar placed 139thin the nation out of over 1600 entries, putting them in the top 7% and 9% respectively of Army JROTC sporter marksmen in the nation. During the two-day competition (60 shots each day), both cadets earned their gold Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) pins by shooting 515 or over out of a possible 600 points on either day. The SHS Army JROTC Rifle team has been the top AJROTC team in Virginia since it began in the 2019-2020 school year.
“I am very proud of these cadets. They both shot their personal bests and both shot over 1000 on the combined two day competition. I could not be prouder,” said Coach LTC (Ret) Peter Badoian.

Smithfield High School Chess Club
Now meets every Monday *AND* Thursday after school from 3 pm to 4 pm in the library.
Students must have a ride home.

Transition to Adulthood Series
In collaboration with PEATC (Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center), the Special Education Department is hosting a Transition to Adulthood series for families of students with disabilities. The first three sessions will consist of training regarding what it means to turn 18 as a student with a disability in Virginia, social security and Medicaid waivers, and financial decisions. Finally, there will be a Transition to Adulthood Fair where families can circulate through various vendor tables. Vendors include the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), Postsecondary Education Rehabilitation Transition (PERT), PEATC, and the Department of Social Services (DSS).
