Art Club
Art Club is open to all students who wish to explore creative expression through art. The club goals this year include working on painting a mural in our school and helping with set painting for the musical.
The first Art Club meeting is Tuesday, September 26th, from 3-4pm in Mrs. Boyce's room (311).
Art Club will remain on Tuesdays throughout the school year from 3-4pm. Contact Mrs. Boyce (cboyce@otsegops.org) for more information.
Auditorium Tech Crew
Events in the Otsego Auditorium are run by students. We meet in the auditorium after school till 5:00 pm depending on the auditorium event calendar. The crew learns how the auditorium runs and the skills needed to work an event. While on crew students are encouraged to build a simple digital portfolio including the types of events and skills they have done. The portfolios can be used for future employment at other venues and related work.
The musical is a big event in the auditorium and has an additional crew. If you are interested in working behind the scenes for the musical, our crew interviews will be held during musical auditions on December 19th and 20th. Interested students should join the Musical Google Classroom with the code jaypzpf.
We use Google Classroom and calendar for communication.
For more information, contact Mr. Walker at mwalker@otsegops.org
Book Club
This club is for anyone who loves to read. Book Club meets monthly to discuss books, share in food and fellowship, sometimes watch a related film, and pick the next month's book. The kick-off meeting to get the first book and set up a calendar will be on Tuesday, September 26th, in Mrs. Trometter's room (134), immediately after school and last about 15-20 minutes. Discussion meetings generally last 30-45 minutes for discussion, and longer if there is a film afterwards. Contact Mrs. Trometter (jtrometter@otsegops.org) with any questions!
Drama Club
Drama Club is back at OHS! We come together for a half hour each week and work on acting skills. Members discuss musicals and plays, do acting activities, and create a safe space to get students out of their comfort zone. The goal this year is to put on a small play!
Interested students should join the Drama Club Google Classroom with the code: ebuvv6k.
Drama Club meets every Monday in the choir room (322) from 3-3:30pm. Contact Ms. Lincoln (mlincoln@otsegops.org) for more information.
GSA
Our GSA Club is here to support students by supporting a safe learning environment for all students, including LGBTQ+ students. The first meeting is Friday, September 8th, after school in Mrs. Knetsch's room (235). Contact Mrs. Knetsch (cknetsch@otsegops.org) with any questions!
Musical
Musicals at OHS have been a huge part of the community for many years. Musicals are a great environment for students to express themselves, make new friendships, and learn new acting, singing, and dancing skills. The musical is open to all OHS students and provides them with a new educational experience!
Interested students should join the Musical Google Classroom with the code jaypzpf. Auditions take place December 19th and 20th. Rehearsals begin after winter break. Musical performances are on March 21, 22, 23, and 24. This year's musical is "Honk!" and will be a fun show!
For more information, contact Ms. Lincoln at mlincoln@otsegops.org.
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society's mission is to serve the community. NHS students do a variety of service projects throughout the year including the paper recycling program, the Christmas toy drive, and Roof Sit for Kids. To be accepted into NHS, you must have a 3.5 GPA (unweighted), show that you have great character, show that you are involved in volunteer activities, and explain your leadership capabilities or practices. NHS has at least one service project a month, and members donate at least nine hours of time throughout the course of the year.
The National Honor Society is open for any junior or senior who wishes to apply and meets the above requirements. The application can be found on the school's website under "Student Life". The application deadline this year is September 25. Any questions about the application process or what NHS is all about should be directed to Mrs. Wideen (mwideen@otsegops.org).
Purple Committee
Otsego's Purple Committee makes a difference in a cause near and dear to so many families. Every other year, Otsego hosts a Purple Week where our student body, athletic teams and our community trade in the blue & gold and wear purple to raise awareness and money to fight cancer and Parkinson's disease. 100% of funds raised go to medical research at Van Andel Institute, a world-renowned facility in Grand Rapids.
Students not only join forces with VAI's broader Purple Community effort, they get up close and personal with the cause, attending special events at Van Andel Institute to learn more about the research taking place and the impact they make through Purple Week. Otsego has raised $146,540 since its first event in 2010. Our next Purple Week is in the fall of 2024, but this committee will be busy this year visiting Van Andel Institute and supporting Purple Community events through volunteering and attendance. Plus, planning for the fall events starts in early spring!
To join, fill out the short form HERE or contact Mrs. McCaw at hmccaw@otsegops.org.
SADD
SADD stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions. This group focused on making good decisions with regard to drugs, alcohol, and driving. For the last seven years the SADD group at OHS has received a $1000 grant through the highway traffic safety division of the Michigan State Police. Otsego SADD also received the Outstanding Traffic Safety Award for the entire state of Michigan in 2019.
SADD welcomes anyone who wants to join the group. Contact Mrs. Henry at mhenry@otsegops.com for more information, or stop by to see her in Room 222.
Student Council
Student Council consists of 6 elected class representatives that serve a one-year term. Student Council members meet monthly to organize Homecoming and Snowcoming, blood drives, food drives, and other events and fundraisers. Petitions are available in the main office and from Mrs. Scott. Elections will be held at class meetings on August 29th, where potential representatives will give a short speech to their class.
For more information, contact Mrs. Scott (mscott@otsegops.org).
Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl is a competition club with Otsego students competing in general knowledge trivia against other schools in West Michigan. The questions cover topics that mirror what you have learned at school from math, science, English, history, music, and others.
Schools compete in teams so even if you don't know the question/answer, someone on your team might! Overall, it is a fun community where we get together about once a week from September to February for practice and events.
We would love to have you join! If you are interested please stop by Mr. DeVries' room (148) or send him an email, at ndevries@otsegops.org.
Robotics - Alotobots 5152
In FRC (First Robotics Competition), high school students collaborate to design, build, and program a large-scale, complex robot to compete in a game-like challenge that changes every year. The challenge typically involves tasks that require the robot to perform a series of actions such as picking up and manipulating objects, navigating obstacles, and working with other robots in a dynamic and time-sensitive environment.
FRC offers students a unique hands-on learning experience where they develop technical skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and leadership qualities. The competition also provides opportunities for students to connect with mentors, industry professionals, and colleges, potentially opening doors to future educational and career paths in STEM fields.
Please see Mr. Miller for more information at mmiller@otsegops.org. We will be having a meeting in early September to get organized for the year. The season starts the first week of January.
Yearbook
Yearbook is now a class, however, yearbook staff members are always looking for additional help with photography and advertising! If you are interested in helping, but can't fit the yearbook class into your schedule, see Mrs. Trometter or contact her at jtrometter@otsegops.org. They would love your help!
