November 2019 Monthly Newsletter
Happy November, Rainiers!
Dear Columbia Crest Families,
November means it is officially Fall and right on cue the chilly weather has returned to the valley. Please see that coats, gloves and hats come to school. Also it means PE is moving inside and all students will need shoes for the gym. If you have gently used shoes that your child has out grown we can find a home for them.
November also tells us that one quarter of our year is gone and we need to talk about your child’s progress this year. Conferences are so very important so that everyone - parent, teacher and student are on the same page and working together. Please come ready with questions for us and ways we can better serve your child and we will share ways that you can be a partner to reinforce the learning that is happening in the classroom.
There are many activities going on in November. As it is a month for sharing we will have our annual food drive during conference week. Please drop off canned goods in your child’s classroom. Honor Society is organizing this drive and will reward the class with the most food with a donut party. The theme is “DONUT let any one go hungry”!
The Student Council (ASB) is having their biggest fundraiser of the year. As in the past we have contracted with the ORANGE GUY to bring you high quality oranges and grapefruit. Profits from this sale will be shared between ASB for school activities and your child’s individual classroom treasury. We are collecting prizes for students based on their sales. We are hoping everyone will participate. The fruit will arrive the first week of December. Please see the order form included in this newsletter. A paper version will be sent home on November 4th.
Our annual wreath making event is taking place this month. If you have fresh cut greens you can donate we would appreciate donations made and will accept them at our school site.
With Appreciation,

Character Trait of the Month ~ Mindfulness
Mindfulness means paying full attention to something. It means slowing down to really notice what you're doing. When you're mindful, you're taking your time. You're focusing in a relaxed, easy way. Mindfulness happens naturally sometimes.

Hands on Health Update
The growing season is coming to an end. We have harvested our crops, and the frost has killed off most everything that was left. Most of the garden is being put to bed for the season.
Our crops have been preserved and are being handed out as snacks to your students. Students will be trying kohlrabi chips.
What's next? Elementary students are exploring mindfulness and yoga. We are also beginning our nutrition lessons.
This will be the healthiest flu season ever!

Counselor's Corner
October was Bullying Prevention month and that is what we have been focusing on in my classroom lessons this month. It is so important that all students are able to recognize when bullying is happening and know what to do. We go over the definition of bullying, talk about what strategies students can try if it happens and remind them of the importance to report bullying to the adults in our building who can support. Parents play a key role in preventing and responding to bullying. If you know or suspect your student is involved with bullying, please bring your concerns to Mrs. Shew or myself. It is important to us that students at Columbia Crest feel safe and respected each day. Students often don't report to us what happens each day so if you have information we don't please share it!
As a reminder I am here at Columbia Crest every other Wednesday as well as every Thursday and Friday. Please give me a call or send me an email if you want to connect with me about your student's needs. Looking forward to another great month!

Oranges & Grapefruits for Sale
Our annual Orange and Grapefruit ASB fundraiser is officially underway!
We have partnered with the same awesome company, The Orange Guy, who provides us with a high quality product.
Prices for both oranges and grapefruits have gone up slightly due to weather, but we are staying with the same price as last year of $35 a case.
Orders are due on November 22nd. We expect the delivery to be on December 6th. Our goal is to sell 100 cases so we receive front door delivery to our school.
We are also happy to have found a new way to share the money made from this fundraiser between our General Student ASB and individual classes. Students will receive raffle tickets and credits when they sell.
There will be prizes for our top seller, everyone who sells and the first students who bring in orders the day after this goes home.
Please join us in making this the best sale ever as the students have great ideas for activities they want to sponsor.
Thank you,
Your Student Council
