John Marshall High School will continue to cultivate a climate and culture conducive to improving the areas of English, Math, Science, History and Federal Graduation Index by obtaining an overall pass rate by 2022 of 82%, 73%, 70%, 70%, and 92% respectively.

Congratulations to the Boy's Basketball team who defeated Radford by 57 points to earn the 2023 2A State Championship. Thank you o Coach White and the entire coaching staff! But..... Job not finished. The team will be headed to the National Tournament in Atlanta at the end of the month!!!

Thank you to the entire fine arts department for their hard work that was on display this Saturday and at the RPS Fine Arts Festival. Our dancers under the direction of Ms. Perze performed. Our band, under the direction of Mr. Reynolds, participated in the showcase featuring the RPS District-Wide Band. Mr. Diggs and Mrs. Field both created a beautiful display of student art!!! It was all so amazing.

EOC Reading & Writing. These are 2 separate tests. Writing is taken in March & Reading is taken in May. Here is what you need to know:

Writing Practice Items, Tools and Guides

• The SOL Practice Items provide the opportunity for students to practice multiple-choice and technology-enhanced items (TEI) that reflect the new content and increased rigor of the revised English SOL.
• To prepare students fully for the online writing assessment, teachers are encouraged to use the Writing Practice Tool (Word) with their students in order to familiarize students with the online formatting tools available in the TestNav testing platform. These formatting tools mirror those of many word-processing programs.

How can I (the caregiver) help?"

Before the Test

• Be prepared: Many teachers will send information home about testing schedules and class preparation plans.

• Help your child in areas of difficulty.
• Give your child a chance to practice.

• If you have concerns about the test or testing situation, talk with your child's teacher.
• If you believe that your child's difficulty with standardized tests may be the symptom of a problem such as a language or learning difficulty, speak with your child's teacher to learn if your child qualifies for any assessment accommodations.

On Test Day

• Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast
• Make sure your child is prepared
• Remain positive

After the Test

• What about the results? Talk with your child's teacher if you have any questions about the test results.
• Review tests with your child: Help your child review any parts of the test that she did not understand

We have completed our 1st-semester courses and have kicked off 2nd semester with a bang! Here is where we stand after our 1st round of SOL testing. We exceeded our goals in both math and history. We have made improvements in science and still have some growth to do in reading. We have no doubt that we will get there.

Math - 96%

History - 77%

Science - 68%

Reading - 53%

Please help us remind our students that every day counts on our 4x4 schedule. The sense of urgency is now! 1 missed day = 2 missed days of instruction for each class.

Here are important dates you need to keep in mind:

All students (Semester 1 and Semester 2) are invited to attend the AP Saturday Sessions, which will begin on March 4th at Huguenot HS. Students must sign up as soon as possible, especially if they require transportation.

It's a fact: Students who attend school regularly learn more and are more successful in school than students who do not. Parents who make regular school attendance a priority also are helping their children learn to accept responsibility, and that’s an important lesson for a successful life. Attendance patterns are formed early in life. Children who develop good attendance habits in the early grades will be more likely to continue them throughout their school career, as well as into their chosen career. Regular attendance is critically important, because students who miss school miss out on carefully planned sequences of instruction. They miss out on active learning experiences and class participation. They miss out on the opportunity to ask questions. As a result, they are more likely to fall behind, and they are more likely to drop out.

Student Attendance and Absences/Truancy

Excused Absences

• An excused absence results from conditions beyond the control of the parent/guardian and/or the student or school. Acceptable absences could include personal illness, death in the family, court appearance, religious holidays, and extenuating circumstances as approved by the school administration.
• Schools are required by state law to take specific actions if a student accumulates a certain number of unexcused absences.
• Students shall not be absent (excused or unexcused reasons, excluding suspensions) for 18 or more school days per year or 18 class periods.
• Any student who misses 18 or more days of school will not be eligible to receive course credit and/or will be subject to retention.
• A waiver for these attendance policies may be considered for medical hardships or other very unique circumstances as determined by the Division Superintendent or his designee.
• Parents and guardians are required to provide a note requesting that the days absent be considered excused absences within five (5) schools days of the last day of school missed. If a note for the day(s) absent is not provided within five (5) school days of the last day of school missed, the period of absences will be considered unexcused.

Unexcused Absences

• Early intervention with the student and parent or parents takes place for repeated unexcused absences.
• Please see School Board Policy linked below for further details about how unexcused absences are handled.

Tardies and Early Dismissals

• Students should start and remain in school for the entirety of the school day. No student shall be allowed to leave school early except in cases of sickness or for some pressing emergency. Parent/guardians are encouraged to make medical and other appointments outside of school hours.
• Students with excessive unexcused tardies or early dismissals may receive sanctions as determined by the superintendent or their designee. Tardies are defined as being more than 30 minutes late to school and early dismissals are defined as leaving more than 30 minutes early.
• Students obtaining permission to leave school during school hours due to sickness shall be required to return a special form properly signed by the parent or legal guardian. All notes of excuse or requests to leave school shall state the reason for such excuse or request. The principal shall judge the validity of all such excuses and requests.
