May - A Race to the End
Dear WLES Families,
As we prepare to close out this remarkable school year, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to you, our incredible families. Your partnership, encouragement, and unwavering support have made all the difference in helping our students grow, succeed, and shine. This year has brought exceptional growth for our learners, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the strong home-school connection we share.
Please be sure to watch your email for reminders and special events that will be happening in classrooms during these final two and a half weeks of school. Many events and dates to remember are listed at the bottom of this newsletter, but teachers may have additional news.
As summer approaches, we hope you enjoy a season filled with laughter, rest, and special memories with your loved ones. Thank you for being such an important part of our WLES family. We can’t wait to welcome you back in the fall!
With gratitude,
Mrs. Sara Delaney
Principal, WLES
Author Jerry Pallotta Visit!
Children’s Author, Jerry Pallotta, will be visiting WLES on Tuesday, May 6th! Thanks to sales from the Scholastic Book Fair, we purchased an autographed book for each child in our school! Students will be receiving the following books:
PK/K: Lion vs. Tiger
1st Grade: Polar Bear vs. Grizzly Bear
2nd Grade: Killer Whale vs. Great White Shark
3rd Grade: Ultimate Shark Rumble
You are welcome to meet Jerry Pallotta himself (and purchase books), at the West Lafayette Public Library Tuesday night, starting at 6:00!
Learn more about Jerry Pallotta here.
Field Day is May 16th
Field Day is set for Friday, May 16th! This is a fun day for students and staff to let their hair down, be silly, and have tons of fun. Based on the current weather forecast, it looks as if it will be sunny and warm. This IS Indiana, however, so if we have to cancel due to weather, there is NO rain date, and a Skyward email will be sent out to all families.
Children should take a water bottle onto the field to drink. If you want your child to wear sunscreen, please send it to school with them. We will not apply sunscreen to children unless you have provided it. Consider having your child wear a hat and sunglasses, and we recommend that they wear tennis shoes rather than sandals, as the ground may become slippery. The following times will help you plan if you should apply the sunscreen at home or send it to school: 1st- 9:15, 3rd- 10:45, K- 12:15, 2nd- 1:45.
There will be water on field day, meaning they WILL get wet! If you know your child does not want to get wet, please send a note to their teacher and practice with them so they can communicate that during field day stations.
We will not be able to provide dry clothing for children, so if you want them to change (2nd grade finishes at 3:15, so they will not have a lot of time), please send an extra set of clothes and shoes along with a large plastic bag to put wet items in. If you're ok with them staying in damp clothes and air-drying, that is fine!
This event is only open to WLES staff, students, and volunteers. If you would like to help, please sign up for a shift using this sign-up form: https://form.jotform.com/250925102475150. Please be advised that volunteers will be at one station for the duration of their time slot and will not travel with an individual class. All volunteers must have a completed background check.

This will require you to come to the school office with your state issued ID. It takes just a few moments and is free.
