July Rollover
The Salford Hills Veggie and Book Swap is an opportunity for our Salford Hills community to come together as neighbors.
Swap a Book
We meet around the back of the school where the garden is. Mrs. Burro, our Reading Specialist, has a generous selection of books spread across tables and we invite students to either swap a book with one of their own or just take one! There's a little something for everyone; from toddler board books all the way through books parents/guardians would enjoy. So bring the whole family!
Grab Some Veggies
Whether you have some veggies to share from your own garden or would just like to work in an around the garden, we hope you'll grab some veggies before you leave. This is our garden, a great big community garden to share with one another. What we grow in the garden is for everyone and we hope you'll enjoy what you take.
What Happens to the Leftovers?
If there are any leftover vegetables, a kind volunteer takes them to the Keystone Opportunity Center Food Bank in Souderton. In the past we've donated almost 1,000 pounds of produce to Keystone straight from our Salford Hills Garden.
The CROPS Garden: Feeding Ourselves, Feeding Others
There are two purposes to our garden initiative. We want to get vegetables into the hands of folks who may not have a garden of their own and would like to sample the freshness that only a home garden provides. But a second purpose is how the garden project compliments our social responsibility goals that is a large part of what we do at Salford Hills. We share our bounty with others when we can. We feel this is an important teaching point for our students and the CROPS garden serves as a model.
Come
So now that you know a little more about the Swap and what it's all about, why not be a part of the whole experience. We'd love to see you!
Playground Revitalization Campaign
This year, spurred by the addition of full-day Kindergarten, a small committee began discussing how we could improve our playground as it lacks enough developmentally appropriate options for younger children. The conversation evolved into how we could potentially revitalize the entire SH playground experience through upgraded equipment for all ages, encouraging exploration and imaginative play, and better utilizing the blacktop as a safe play space. However, playgrounds are not funded by the state but rather partially through teacher-requested grants or more likely – Home & School associations. Therefore, in order to fund such a significant project, we will need to add fundraisers in addition to our annual Race for Education. The Race for Education has always been a wonderful and effective fundraiser as it funds ALL of our numerous activities, assemblies, field trips and so much more. Home & School could not function without it. Additional fundraisers would not replace the Race for Education, but specifically raise money for the Playground Revitalization Campaign.
Our expectation is that the playground will be a 3-5 year project, with the potential to make certain enhancements each year. This year will focus on Phase 1 (small scale, big impact) -- addressing some immediate needs and creating a better play space on the blacktop. This is a new and evolving endeavor that we hope will benefit children for years to come. Please feel free to email your ideas, questions or concerns to board@salfordhillshsa.org. Thank you for your support!
