Why is my child not permitted an eraser in the classroom?
This is a great question and likely something those of you with younger children have noticed.
When our students are first learning how to read and write their phonograms, they are given pencils without erasers. Instead of erasing a mistake, the students are taught to cross it out using a clear, neat, and simple dash mark across the mistake. This may seem strange, however there are several very intentional reasons behind this.
- This teaches the student to 'pause and think' before making any pencil marking, teaching them to be intentional with even the smallest things such as handwriting.
- It allows the teacher to see what kind of mistakes the students are making and thus plan how to best support the students.
- Erasers slow down a student's pacing. Omitting them maintains pacing in the classroom.
- Lastly, Literacy Essentials as previously mentioned is a multisensory approach to learning, a big piece of which is kinesthetic (learning by doing, through intentional movement). When students erase a mistake, they are simply making it 'go away.' Crossing out the mistake allows the students to see their error, remember it, and learn from it. They understand that mistakes are part of the learning process.
As the year progresses, students are able to visibly see their progress from their first practice pages to their current one. They take pride in their accomplishment, often exclaiming aloud 'Look! This page has almost no strikes! I got better!'. Then, when the teachers see fit, they are gifted their first eraser.

Book of the Week:
The Legend of Sleepy Hallow
Washington Irving
There is no better story to close our 'haunting books' series and to kick off Halloween week than The Legend of Sleepy Hallow. Ichabod Crane is a schoolteacher who comes to the town of Sleepy Hallow, a town haunted by ghost stories. Soon Ichabod finds himself being chased by one of the most bone-chilling of them all...the headless horseman.
