Welcome Jodi Cox, MACS Family Liaison
As a Family Liaison, I serve both the student and their family. I want our parents, students and families to know we are here for them. By being “in the field”, going to homes and being present, the families and students that want/need help will know they are supported; for some families this is all they need. There are challenges in our students’ homes on a daily basis they have limited to zero control over. My role is to assist these families and students to overcome these challenges in order for students to succeed in and out of the classroom. By linking and coordinating our families with community and state resources we can help break down these barriers. Success for some of our students is possible by simply adding layers of support and advocating for them.
The support and resources I provide for students and families, include but are not limited to: basic needs (food, clothing, housing assistance, utility assistance), community referrals (mental health and/or substance abuse counseling, accessing appropriate healthcare, connecting with human services organizations, mentorship programs, DSS reports, before/after school care), and home visits (address truancy, lack of engagement and participation in learning, drop-out risks).

Learning Opportunities within Our Schools and Community
- Free swimming lessons at RCC for any Jones student
- Free sports clinics for any K-8 student in the areas of soccer, basketball and volleyball
- Free American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification for 15 high-school students, providing them with this $150 value that directly leads them to employable skills
- Free daily before school workout sessions for 30 MAMS students, all led by RCC Certified Fitness Trainers
- Free weekly dance class for 25 MAHS students provided by Surry Arts Council
- Free weekly art and culture class for all Kindergarteners in Dual Language Immersion at BHT
- Access for all BHT students and teachers to utilize the Story Walk on the Greenway, which begins at Tharrington Park and includes 9 stations with stories over the course of 1 mile down and 1 mile back. See the pictures below.
- 200 cinch sacks have been developed and will be distributed to all MACS students living in the Mount Airy Housing Authority. These include fitness bands, school supplies, hand sanitizer, and 3 age-appropriate books.
