F E B R U A R Y - 2 0 2 4
With Mrs. Weiss & Mrs. Vandiver
As we enter the month of February we are so thankful for each and everyone of our students. Our students came back in January ready to learn and to work hard to achieve goals they have set. So proud to see the growth we have had from the start of the year. During the first week of February every student will be bringing home a letter in regards to our support for students with literacy. After receiving this letter please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions at all. This is just one of the many ways we are working to support our students in their academic growth.
As we continue through our winter months please remember we will be outside each day for recess as long as the ‘feels like’ temperature is 27 degrees or above. Students need to bring coats, hats and gloves each day. This time outdoors gives us time to move, breathe in some fresh air and recharge our bodies and brains to be able to work to our best ability. If there is inclement weather please watch all our social media outlets for school closings; Facebook, Remind, school district website, Twitter and radio/tv stations.
During the month of February we will be having our last classroom party of the year for Valentine's Day. Teachers will be sending home more information soon with the information for their individual class parties. Please keep in mind we will follow the same procedures as we did for our other parties this school year. Parties will be on February 14th 1:30-2:30. Parents can begin signing in at the front entrance at 1:15 and will be released to head to classrooms at 1:30. Also please be aware there is no school for students on Friday, February 16th and Monday, February 19th due to staff PD and Presidents Day.

There will be a KIDS HEART CHALLENGE SPIRIT WEEK February 5th-9th!
Please dress up and/or donate to help us support the American Heart Association!
Nurse Maci will have a "mystery box" of prizes this year, where students can pay 1 dollar to grab a trinket! Examples of mystery box prizes could be bracelets, keychains or balls...Our goal at WF is to raise 550 dollars. If we hit our goal, the AHA will send popsicles for an outdoor popsicle party once the weather gets warmer!
- Make sure to update your child’s medical information with Nurse Kreitler if anything changes throughout the school year! We want to take the best care of your child.
- ALL GRADES: Please keep a change of winter appropriate clothes in your child’s backpack, just in case! Write your child's name on the items so they don't get lost!
- If you borrow a set of clothes from our nurse, please make sure to wash and return them. We are running low on clothing items.
Title 1 Reading With Mr. Roux and Ms. Cheek
Igniting a Love for Reading: Connecting Beanstack to Literacy Activities
Beanstack has changed the way students approach reading. Now, they are excited to sit down and read so they can log their minutes. The program’s engaging features have contributed to a significant increase in student participation in reading. As we push forward and increase the minutes read we want to encourage students to also do activities that connect to reading. Here are some simple activities your child can do.
Genre Challenges: Encourage your child to create personal challenges. This could be reading two silly books. or two historical fiction books. By creating challenges, your student can extend their reading in a favorite genre or try something new.
Visit the library: Now that so many children are actively reading books it would be a perfect time to visit the Farmington Public library.
Write a review: After your child has finished a book, encourage them to write a review of it. This could be as simple as having the child say why they liked or disliked the book. For older children, they could write a short paragraph summarizing the book and discussing what they thought about it.
At Home Reading Resources
As a parent, you want the best for your child. One of the most fundamental skills your child will need is reading. Reading opens up a world of possibilities for your child and is critical to their academic success. If you're looking for ways to support your child's reading at home, many resources are available to help. From online reading programs to educational apps and books, you can use various tools to make reading fun and engaging for your child.
Below are five resources you can use at home with your child to help support their reading.

Have you and your child been logging minutes in Beanstack? Read more about what Beanstack is and how you can help your child log their minutes below!
The more reading children do, the more quickly they will develop as readers. It is often recommended that beginning readers spend 20 minutes reading each day (in addition to the reading they do at school). Logging their minutes in Beanstack and watching their streak grow could help motivate students!
I am SO PROUD to announce that we have already blown our Community goal of 10,000 minutes out of the water and are challenging ourselves to see how many we can get by May! Great job Washington Franklin!
