The Lightning stormed the Bloomington Ice Gardens on the opener of the 25th Eastview High School Hockey season in a match-up against Jefferson. Eastview worked hard from the first shift drawing an early penalty and putting the first five shots on the net. On a sequence that began with a Tyler Cords rocket high off the post, Nick Karam knotted the season’s first goal on an assist from Charlie Ortman at 10:46. Cords followed at 12:38 on assists from Karam and Logan Opgrand. The lightning took a 2-0 lead into intermission outshooting Jefferson 11-4.
Penalties picked up in the second period as the physical game became chippy. The lightning responded as John Kisch got into the action with a power-play goal at 1:35 with assists from Jordan Brothers and Opgrand. The lightning penalty kill led by Walker Bergland and Cody Domalgaski was up to the task and at 3:55 of the second, Bergland’s hustle was rewarded with a goal on a nice shot from the left dot, unassisted for a 4-0 lead.
The Jaguars ended Jay Svaren’s bid for a shutout at 4:42 of the second on a high shot over the right shoulder where the lightning keeper looked to be screened. Zach Wooten got into the action by notching his first varsity goal at 11:29 with a wicked shot from the slot. The lone assist went to Gabe Tritchler. Kisch knotted his second of the game on a power-play scramble at 14:05 with assists going to Wooten and Jordan Larkee. Larkee closed out the lightning scoring at 15:29 of the second on a sweet indirect pass from Tritschler that resulted in a breakaway and a nice forehand backhand deke and a 7-1 lead for the lightning. For the period, Svaren had 10 saves while the lightning lit the lamp on five of 13 shots on goal.
The Lightning started the 3rd on the penalty kill but was again up to the task, with the home team ultimately going 0-7 on the power play. Jefferson scored their second on a five on five situations at 10:21 with a neutral zone chip that resulted in a two on one goal to reduce the Eastview lead to five. For the remainder of the third, the chippy nature of the game took on a new dimension with a parade to the penalty box that culminated with a five-minute major by Bloomington after a big Eastview open-ice hit. The lightning nearly scored three more times during the power play before another scrum sent players from both teams to the box in the final two minutes. Eastview’s 7-2 win was punctuated by Svaren’s 17 saves as the lightning outshot the Jaguars 34-19 while converting on two of four power plays.
The lightning next travel to St. Thomas to take on the Cadets on Thursday, December 2 at 7 pm with all superfans needed!
Nov. 23: Eastview High School Girls Varsity Hockey beat Lakeville North High School 3-1
Lightning top Panthers 3-1 in first road game of the season. The Lightning left the friendly confines of AVSA for the first time this season and came away with a hard-fought win at Lakeville North.
Ninth-grader Sari Cords put the Lightning on the board at 16:25 of the first. Junior Meghan Keating assisted on the goal. After one, the score was 1-0 and the shots were 7-6.
There was no scoring in the second. After 2, the shots were 11-14.
The Panthers tied the score at 11:31 of the third, but the Lightning quickly bounced back. At 13:30, senior Nora Stepan fired a shot from the slot and senior Avery Chesek buried the rebound to give the Lightning the lead. Sophomore Ellie Groebner also assisted on the play. North pulled its goalie, but the Lightning stood strong. At 15:38, junior Jessica Wilhelm took a breakout feed from Chesek and turned it into an empty net goal to seal the win, 3-1. Shots on goal were 18-23.
The win moved the #18 Lightning to 2-2-1. Next up: Tuesday, November 30 at #5 (A) Simley. Game time 7:00.
Nov. 20: Eastview High School Girls Varsity Hockey falls to Rosemount High School 2-1
Old rivals met for the first time this season and Rosemount escaped with a hard-fought 2-1 win.
At 11:38 of the first, Rosemount potted a power play goal and took a 1-0 lead to the second. The shots on goal were 2-9.
There was no scoring in the second. After two, the shots were 13-20.
At 5:26 of the third, 9th grader Sari Cords scored her first varsity girl and tied the game at 1. Cords forced a turnover at the Lightning blue line, raced to the Irish goal and beat the goalie low, glove side. Despite many good chances for both teams, the goalies and defense were strong and the score remained deadlocked at 1. Shots at the end of regulation were 18-29.
With less than 1:30 left in the OT, Rosemount netted the game winner. The final shots were 21-35. The result left the Lightning’s record at 1-2-1.

Nov. 26: JV Boys Blast Bloomington Jefferson in Conference Season Hockey Opener
The JV boys hockey team had a strong start to their season with a big win over conference opponent Bloomington Jefferson on Friday. Forward Ethan Hansen ripped one in the upper corner with 6 minutes left in the first for Eastview's first goal. Hansen was assisted by Graham Ellingson and Michael Cherevatsky, and the Lightning ended the first period with a 1-0 lead. The Jaguars tied it up early in the second, but Eastview gained the lead again on a 4 on 4 when the Lightning rushed it down the ice and forward Louis Rogers stuffed it in the net to make it 2 to1 Eastview. Rogers was assisted by Sean Kalthoff on the goal. With less than two minutes left in the second, forward Jaymeson Zackery battled it out in front of the net to put the Lightning ahead 3 to 1. Defensiveman Brayden Kaldenbach had his first assist of the game and Cherevatsky notched his second. With less than one minute left in the period, Rogers shot it through the goalie’s five-hole for his second goal of the night. Defensiveman Abe Johnson assisted on the goal which gave Eastview a strong 4 -1 lead. The Lightning scored again midway through the third when forward Brady Swenson cleaned up the loose puck out front. Kaldenbach was credited with the assist - his second of the night. Strong goaltending by Blake Jensen helped secure the victory with 14 saves, and the Lightning finished the night with a 5 -1 victory over Bloomington Jefferson. The JV hit the road again on Thursday, December 2 to face the Cadets of St. Thomas.
Nov. 23: Eastview High School Girls Junior Varsity Hockey falls to Lakeville North High School 7-3
The EV Lightning JV hockey team played the LVN Panthers this past Tuesday at Ames Arena. The Panthers came out on top with a 7-3 victory.
The lightning opened the scoring at 2:20 of the 1st on the power play. #3 E. Schaefer scored the goal with the assists going to # 14 M. Droege & #35 E. Warren. The lightning struck again a couple of minutes later. #23 C. Johnson scored the goal with an assist to #18 A. Dugan. The score at the end of the 1st period was 2-2 and SOG totals were Eastview 5 LVN 10.
LVN scored the next 3 goals to take a 5-2 lead. EV got on the board again late in the 2nd period. #26 B. Dihel scored the goal with an assist to #23 C. Johnson. The 2nd period ended with LVN up 6-3. SOG at the end of the 2nd period were EV 10 - LVN 24. LVN scored the only goal of the 3rd period. The final score was LVN 7- EV 3. The Lightning finished the game with 15 SOG and LVN had 30. The loss left the JV lightning with a 2-2-1 record.
The lightning are back in action this Tuesday as they hit the road and visit Veterans arena in IGH to take on Simley. Game time is 5:00 p.m. GO ⚡️⚡️

The lightning JV hockey team played the Rosemount Irish at AVSA. The Lightning came out on top with an exciting 8-3 victory.
The lightning opened the scoring at 13:05 of the 1st. #3 E. Schaefer scored the goal with the assist going to # 26 B. Dihel. The 1st period ended with EV up 1-0. The 1st period SOG totals were Eastview 16 Rosemount 6.
Rosemount tied the game at 5:11 of the 2nd period. The Irish scored again 2 minutes later to take a 2-1 lead. EV tied the game at 2 late in the 2nd period. #10 B. Bjerke with an assist to #3 E. Schaefer. The 2nd period ended Tied at 2. The 2nd period SOG totals were Eastview 12 Rosemount 11.
Eastview’s Sari Cords scored at 3:08 of the 3rd to give EV a 3-2 lead. Rosemount tied the game :13 later at 3. The lightning offense came to life at 3:43 of the 3rd. #24 Ava Gross scored her 1st JV goal with the assist going to #16 Ali Dugan. This gave the lightning a 4-3 lead. The lightning then scored 4 consecutive goals: #5 Ellie Patterson (unassisted), #26 Brynn Dihel (assist to #11 Mackenzie Henning), #22 Sari Cords (assist to #26 B. Dihel), #22 Sari Cords (assist to #5 Ellie Patterson) completed the scoring with her 3rd goal of the period at 13:43. Final score Eastview 8- Rosemount 3⚡️⚡️
The lightning finished the game with 46 SOG. Rosemount had 25.
The win left the JV lightning with a 2-1-1 record.
Nov. 18: Eastview High School Girls Junior Varsity Hockey beat Elk River 3-2
The lightning JV hockey team played the Elk River Zimmerman Elks at AVSA. The Lightning came out on top with a thrilling 3-2 OT victory .
It was scoreless early. Lila Hanson had a great point blank save at 9:54 of the 1st period. Both goalies stood tall with excellence. The 1st period ended in a 0-0 tie. The 1st period SOG totals were Eastview 19 Elk River 11.
EV took a 1-0 lead at 8:43 of the 2nd period. #6 H. Holman scored the goal with the assist going to #14 M. Droege. Lila Hanson continued her strong goaltending with a save on a breakaway at 2:51 of the period. The period ended with EV leading 1-0. The 2nd period SOG totals were Eastview 8 Elk River 14.
The Elks scored at :34 of the 3rd period to tie the game at 1-1. The Elks tallied another goal at 2:39 to take a 2-1 lead. Eastview Ella Schaefer tied the game at 2 at 6:23 of the 3rd. The assist went to #28 L. Speegle. The 3rd period ended in a 2-2 tie.
The game went to a 6 minute running time OT. Lila Hanson made some great saves early in OT. #14 M. Droege scored the OT winner for EV at 4:20.
The Lightning finished the game with 38 SOG and the Elks had 41. The win left the JV lightning with a 1-1-1 record.
