NO SCHOOL TOMORROW! FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13
Tomorrow is Oregon Statewide Teacher Inservice Day so there is no school for students.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Atkinson Families,
We have a number of NO SCHOOL days coming up in October and November that we want to make sure are on your radar:
- Friday, October 13: Oregon Statewide Teacher Inservice Day
- Friday, November 3: Teacher Planning Day
- Friday, November 10: Veterans Day holiday (observed)
- Mon–Tue, November 20–21: Parent/Teacher Conferences
- Wed–Fri, November 22–24: Thanksgiving holiday
Our next safety drill will be the International ShakeOut on October 19. This will consist of an earthquake drill followed by an evacuation drill. Oregon lies at a convergent continental boundary where two tectonic plates are colliding, which means our chances of having an earthquake are high, thus the need to practice what to do in case we are at school when one happens. Please make sure your family has a PLAN for what to do if an earthquake happens when you are not at school as well!

VACCINATION AND HEALTH RESOURCES
Multnomah County Student Health Centers (fliers in English, Russian, Chinese, and Vietnamese):
UPCOMING EVENT — EMPODERANDO FAMILIAS
This free Spanish language event represents a collaboration between all three counties in the metro area and Portland Public Schools. Empoderando Familias is focused on giving Spanish speaking families access to information about parenting for prevention of substance use. Strategies that are going to be highlighted include how to advocate for yourself in English speaking systems, setting boundaries for your kids that help them to grow up healthy, and how to maintain relationships and connections through the teen years. The event will also cover information about commonly used substances among youth. The Multnomah County event location is McDaniel High School. See THIS FLYER for more details.
RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES ON THE EVENTS IN ISRAEL & GAZA
Similar to the crisis in Ukraine, the effects of the attack and response in Israel & Gaza will be far-reaching. Images of terrorist violence against children, dead bodies, gun battles, missile strikes, and destroyed cars and buildings on the news and social media can cause psychological distress among students and adults. The Oregon Department of Education has gathered resources HERE to support educators and parents in discussing this critical issue.
