Monk Fryston Newsletter 2.2.24
The school target for next week is;
Anxious about attending school?
- We know that children are sometimes anxious about attending school. This is quite natural and can affect all children from time to time. We know, though, that being in the familiar environment and routine of school, with their friends, is good for them. We will always support children who are anxious about coming into school so please help us by making sure that your child attends even if they are a bit reluctant.
Accelerated Readers
- As you will know, once children are independent readers they move to the Accelerated Reader system. Once they have read a book they can take a computerised quiz to check their understanding. If they get the questions right, they accumulate points towards their next certificate that is presented in assembly. The certificates are quite hard to attain so please encourage your child to keep reading books and taking quizzes so that their achievements can be recognised.
Parking Concerns
- Sadly, we have once again had a number of concerns raised about parking around our school. This particularly concerns parking around the junction with Water Lane. Cars have been forced to mount the pavement to get past, which is incredibly hazardous for pedestrians. Please park considerately and ensure that there is adequate space around the junction, as listed in the Highway Code.
Birthdays.
- We love celebrating children’s birthdays. We try to encourage them not to bring in sweets on that day, though. This is to ensure that we send the right messages about being a healthy school, and it keeps costs down for parents. Instead, we encourage children to come into school in non-uniform on their birthday. This helps to instantly show it is their special day so everyone can wish them a happy birthday.
Pay it Forward on ParentPay
- You may have noticed on ParentPay that there is a new option to make a ‘pay forward’ donation. This money will go towards the cost of school visits. We know that some families struggle to make the donation towards visits and this extra payment will help us to ensure we can balance trips financially.
Online Suggestions Box.
We have set up an online suggestions box. Scan this QR code if you want to give feedback on our school (non-urgent enquiries only please). The QR code is also on the parent noticeboards in school
Break the Rules Day - Friday 9th February
- It is PTA ‘Break the Rules Day’ next Friday, 9th Feb. This can be paid for on ParentPay. Please do remind children that they can only break the rules listed for the activity – not all school rules!

School Calendar
No more reminder texts.
- Parents have indicated that receiving multiple reminder texts become frustrating, so after half term we will stop sending these out. It is a parent’s responsibility to remain informed about school events, so please remember to look at the calendar on our website regularly to check what is coming up.
PTA 100 Club
Free school meals for all years for pupils whose families receive financial support.
If you are in receipt of certain benefits, your child could also qualify for free school meals during all school years. To qualify you must be receiving:
Universal Credit, provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earnings from up to three of your most recent assessment periods (£616.67 per month)
Income Support
Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Support under part six of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
The guarantee element of Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit, provided you are also not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual household gross income that does not exceed £16,190 (as assessed by HMRC)
Working Tax Credit run-on, paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
Please note that contributions-based benefits, including contribution-related Jobseekers' Allowance do not entitle you to claim free school meals.
You will receive an instant decision on whether your application is successful. If it is, we will fully process the application in 5 working days and notify the school. Once the school has received this your child can begin enjoying free school meals. You should continue to pay until confirmation comes through. Schools may be able to arrange reimbursement of payment made while your entitlement is being confirmed.
Free school meals claims cannot be backdated. They are awarded from the date we receive the application, once eligibility is confirmed. This is because there is a legal requirement for a request to be made, before a free school meal can be provided. If you are not entitled to free school meals, you will be notified in writing.
