The Annual VA NBCT Summit will be held March 23rd in Richmond. This one-day event will be a great opportunity to learn and network with other NBCTs from across Virginia. The summit will include a variety of professional opportunities for advocacy, candidate support, and much more.

The VA NBCT Network is looking for enthusiastic leaders to present at this year's summit. The theme is Advance, Support, Advocate. If you would be interested in presenting at this year's summit, submit a proposal via the link below.

On November 17, 2018 VA NBCT Network leaders, Nancy Winter-Traynor, Tamra Vaughan, Sarah Payne, Autumn Nabors, and Dana Gumm (all pictured below) and ACEs, Judy Diechman and Amanda Schneck, traveled to Martinsville, VA to hold our the network's Agents Changing Education meeting with prospective candidates.

We held the 2 hour event at The New College Institute, a gorgeous modern facility. ACEs were able to present and raise awareness of the National Board Certification process. This initiative is part of our larger grant work with LEAP (Leading, Empowering, and Advocating for the Profession) in collaboration with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Congratulations to all the NBCTs who have achieved their certification this year and all Renewal Candidates who have renewed their certificate. We are excited to have you join us and we want to celebrate YOU as an accomplished teacher! We would love for you to share your story with us! We may even feature you on our NBCT Spotlight!

Judy Deichman is the librarian at Nottoway Middle School in Crewe, Virginia. She started a bookmobile 3 years ago to take books and lunches to her students during the summer months. She had opened her library during the summer, but found that students did not have transportation. It was then that Nottoway-Book-Away bookmobile was born. Karen Foley is a Virginia NBCT doing big things! Karen works in Northampton County Public Schools and is the Coordinator of Professional Learning, which includes new teacher mentoring, VTSS/PBIS, and National Board Candidate Support. Karen certified in 2005 in the certificate area English Language Arts/Early Adolescence and renewed in 2015.

Karen is the author of the book Santa's Sick of Cookies, used to teach literacy skills including characters, setting, plot, theme, problem/solution, visualization, figurative language, nouns, making predictions, and writing.

Santa flies South from a Pole far away as Eastern Shore youngins keep watch for his sleigh...Surely even old Saint Nick gets sick of cookies on Christmas Eve! A little boy from the Eastern Shore of Virginia is determined to give Santa some variety in his Yuletide snacks . . . But how?

Karen's book will be available locally and on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble.

On November 30th, VA NBCT Network Leaders presented at the VASCD Conference in Williamsburg, VA. Their session showed participants how to take a deep dive into the Virginia Teacher Standards and how they are aligned with the Five Core Propositions of the National Board Certification Process. Participants were guided through the Five Core Propositions with the book, What Teachers Should Know and Be Able To Do.

The mission of the VA NBCT Network is to collaboratively advance teaching and learning, by supporting aspiring and current NBCTs and advocate for policies and practices to support excellence in education.
