Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Lake Shore Public Schools was joined by Superintendent Dr. DiPonio and Lake Shore High School Principal Dr. Bross to commemorate the completion of the new Student Union at Lake Shore High School with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its front entrance on 13 Mile Road as part of the high school's Sneak Preview Night.
The ribbon was cut by Sylvia Srebernak, LSPS secretary for 32 years, in ceremonial fashion to commemorate a new beginning for LSHS. September 2nd marked Sylvia's 79th birthday, a perfect day to celebrate this true Shorian, one who always puts others first and at a place of such historic importance.
Architects envisioned a space that fostered learning and inspired creativity and innovation. It was to be a beacon of modernity, a testament to progress, and a reflection of the community's values and that promise has been delivered. The space, which has been under construction for the past 18 months, will provide our students with a world-class hub to match the world-class staff and world-class students that we have at Lake Shore Public Schools.
Located in the lakefront community of St. Clair Shores, the newly renovated Lake Shore High School will be a hub of activity, buzzing with the energy of collaboration and the excitement of discovery. Here are a few of the new features in the space. The entrance to a school building serves as the primary point of access and the first line of defense in ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors. There will be cozy nooks where students can gather for impromptu study sessions or quiet reflection. As you step through the doors of the newly renovated cafeteria, you will be greeted by the tantalizing aroma of freshly prepared meals wafting through the air.
Board President Kurt Ziegler stated, "The Board of Education extends its sincerest appreciation to the Lake Shore community for supporting this project and congratulates Lake Shore High School for providing a world-class education and experience to all students."
A special thank you to our Band and Color Guard for their attendance. We can always count on them to help us create pomp and circumstance. We also appreciate Council Member Candice Rusie, Miss St. Clair Shores Grace Hanke, and Board of Education members Sue DeLong, Ken Gulock, Amber Hildebrand, Elizabeth Munger, and Wendy Tobias for their support at this important event. And of course, we are always appreciative of Robert Stark, Stewart Photography, and Video Productions students Jimmy Sheen and Abby Smith for their media coverage.
Lake Shore has a strong legacy of being excellent stewards of the community’s resources. We are committed to providing you with bond updates as we continue to prioritize our students' future.

Food Service
Lake Shore Public Schools, in partnership with Chartwells Food Services, provides healthy meals to all children. Families can use our Nutrislice app for access to menus.
You asked, we listened! Introducing Family Portal by Meal Magic for all things Food Service such as making deposits, transferring between students, viewing account history, setting daily spending limits or other restrictions!
We are excited to announce that due to Michigan School Meals Law, all meals will be free again for the 2024-2025 school year! Lake Shore Public Schools is still seeking to obtain completed Education Benefits Forms from all families; It is important to receive these applications in order to attain the maximum amount of federal assistance for other programs (outside of free meals) that greatly benefit our students and families such as school funding, technology funding, SAT, ACT, and AP test discounts, college application discounts, athletics, grants, and instructional support programs. This form needs to be filled out each school year, one per family.
The easiest way to apply is online by visiting https://lakeshore.familyportal.cloud/.
The Eligibility Benefit Form (EBF) is also located here, in hard copy form, and completed forms should be returned to your child's school.
Please have your child bring their Student ID as this identification will be utilized by our Food Service Department for all meals. It should be ready to be scanned when making food selections.
Contact Rosa Burg at (586) 285-8926 or rburg@lsps.org for questions or assistance completing the Eligibility Benefits Form. Chartwells Dining Service's goal is to serve up happy and healthy meals while making the cafeteria the happiest place in school.
Technology Assistance
Our districtwide 1:1 Chromebook initiative is designed to cultivate learning. We are excited to continue to distribute devices to all students this year!
Chromebooks run the Google Chrome operating system, a lightweight OS that is designed to run apps over the web. The devices are protected from viruses and managed by the district through a central web console. These computers allow access to anytime, anywhere, anyway learning, and allow students to build technology skills and responsibility in a safe and caring environment. To view our 1:1 Frequently Asked Questions document, visit this link.
Have you turned on your Chromebook lately or tried logging into PowerSchool or Schoology? If you need technology support, send an email to helpdesk@lsps.org. Parents, please include your child’s first and last name and building.
Chromebook Insurance
Since the adoption of 1:1 Chromebooks in our district we have offered optional insurance coverage.
This year we will be using Smart Tech to insure our devices. The cost is $29 per device and there are no deductibles and no claim limits. It covers accidental damage, battery failure, liquid damage, and manufacturer defects. It also includes loss and theft. Chargers are not included in coverage. This is a one-time fee per school year.
While insurance coverage still remains optional, it is highly recommended. Without coverage you will be responsible for the full cost of any repairs outside of manufacturer defects. Below is an example of costs (prices will fluctuate):
-Chromebook: $300
-Screen: $75
-Battery: $40
-Hinges: $25
-Keyboard: $20
-Camera: $10
-Chargers are $15, through us, not the insurance. SmartTech made a company decision not to cover the chargers.
Everything else remains the same. Students will still bring devices to the media center when they need a repair and we will process the claims.
For $29 per device/per year you are covered for everything other than malicious damage and chargers. There are no additional out-of-pocket fees. There is a discount for families with more than 3 children. If a family wanted to take advantage of the family discount they would need to call SmartTech to purchase.
The portal to purchase insurance is open now until December 20th and coverage starts from date of purchase until August 30, 2025:https://smarttechinsurance.com/organization/lake-shore-public-schools/

Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. Note: We have made a few changes to this calendar; All adjustments are located on our District Events Calendar.
This calendar outlines all 24 character strengths, 1 highlighted per week. Our teachers create engaging and impactful lessons — differentiated by grade-level — and share through presentations, student recognitions, classroom discussions, and building-specific displays.
An example of several character strengths was provided over the Summer that started with a recognition post on Facebook's Saint Clair Shores Residents Page. With so much deserving hype over Taylor Rychel's "eager to help" efforts, this local hero was featured in the Where Your Voice Matters section for WXYZ.
-Max Wagman's Recognition Post: https://www.facebook.com/groups/111588102982154/posts/1843714469769500/
-WXYZ Story: https://www.wxyz.com/news/voices/st-clair-shores-man-spends-free-time-cleaning-parks-becomes-beloved-local-celebrity
Robin Ostrowski commented, "That’s Taylor our neighbor! He goes around doing that all over the city! He’s a sweet young man!" Leah Case wrote, "Taylor is one of the sweetest people that I know! He always goes above and beyond and is the most friendliest person you’ll ever meet. He’s hardworking and so kind." Wendy Malak-Giannetti added, "Way to go Taylor! I love that you are doing this and hopefully this catches on with other young adults to do the same! If we all did our part this city would shine." Robin, Leah, and Wendy were among several other residents who chimed in to encourage the City Council to recognize and celebrate his actions.
A Lake Shore High School Class of 2021 graduate, Taylor is an exceptional Shorian who exemplifies what it means to serve others, using all 24 character strengths as his road map. A MOCI student in Mr. Carney's classroom for all 4 years of high school, this teacher wished he had 100 more like him any day. He said, "In the classroom, his academic acumen was only outmatched by his willingness and determination to improve and succeed. Always smiling, always cheerful."
Thank you Taylor for your active volunteerism in our neighborhoods, assistance in property maintenance with your dad which included landscaping and snow clearing, and for your heroic efforts with Lake Shore's custodial team. You rock!
We look forward to recognizing him with gifts on behalf of Dominic Frisina and his Positivity Project team at the Homecoming game!
We also appreciate LSPS staff for your time and talent as you worked with our Shorian Nation to learn or develop a skill with several of our student participants while honing our P2 skills. This included opportunities with Summer tutoring, too!
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate CURIOSITY (9/16-20) and TEAMWORK (9/23-27).

OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.

Innovation
School Preparation
How much time is invested into getting our schools and classrooms ready for your children?
Before anything else, preparation is the key to success. Bond renovations this year included new furniture and storage that was carefully arranged this past week. School supply boxes were delivered, Chromebooks, cords, and cables were inspected for quality assurance, and continuous landscaping enhancements increased overall aesthetics; These are staple parts of the planning process for every new school year. But for a teacher, intention begins with classroom setup.
Upon entry, but not before a variety of morning greeting choices such as air hug, wave, or thumbs up. Carefully crafted getting to know you activities and a simple surprise or two lay neatly on desks. Bulletin boards displays, both in traditional and digital forms, adorned the walls to convey information and encourage participation.
There were books, folders, P2 sightings, all meticulous placed for ease of access and understanding. It was as if our staff, in addition to Teacher Education degrees from higher education institutions, also earned Interior Design endorsements.
Thank you for making first impressions that last well beyond this Week 1 moment. We encourage you to help us continue to create a positive atmosphere by taking the time to review our updated handbooks.
Our parent-student handbooks are official statements of school rules.
These newly updated handbooks contain important information that will help to ensure the success of every student; students and parents/guardians should become familiar with its content. For your convenience, they have been divided into four sections: Important Contact Information, State and Federal Guidelines, General School Information, and Student Code of Conduct.
While rules and expectations are not always popular, they help us put into words the types of behaviors that support a positive and inclusive learning climate and those that don't. With learning as our top priority, it's important that our school community agree to follow a set of behaviors most likely to help all members succeed.

Science and Gaming
In Mrs. Clow and Mrs. Kemner's 8th grade Science classes at Kennedy Middle School, students were tasked with saving Fred.
Fred has been spending his summer boating on the Great Lakes. But he’s not too bright (after all, the brains of worms are pretty small). He’s never learned how to swim and he never wears his life preserver. The worst has happened! His boat has capsized and he’s stuck! Fortunately, his life preserver is in the boat, but unfortunately he does not know how to reach it without falling off and drowning.
How will these Clippers save Fred using only 4 paper clips without touching Fred, the boat, or the life preserver directly with their hands?
Students setup the challenge, followed the rules, created a flowchat showing their sequence of operations, listed problems that they encountered, and discussed how they solved the challenge.
Mason Merten enjoyed the lesson. He explained, "My partner Logan and I used paperclips to bend into a triangle and stretch the life preserver. We had to use a lot of teamwork to save Fred." And their favorite part of the lesson? Eating Fred!
Over at Masonic Heights Elementary, Mrs. Legato created a reward system for her class. Students may earn 30 minutes of game time on Friday, to replace morning work. It is a soft start to their day and helps to build strong relationships within her classroom. Many of the game selections require working together or problem-solving, too!
The Lake Shore Foundation has approved $440.00 to purchase Charty Party and Venus packs for the science classes at Kennedy Middle School and Lake Shore High School. Charty Party combines mathematically questionable charts and absurd humor into a fast-paced, easy-to-learn party game. Science gamification? We’re in! Congratulations!
