WAKE Up and Read Book Drive
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! I hope you and your family are well.
Please consider helping me (Crystal Snyder, Media Coordinator) to support the WAKE Up and Read Children’s Book Drive. WAKE Up and Read is a community coalition committed to ensuring each and every child–regardless of race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status–is reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade. The Annual Book Drive collects books to distribute to children in grades K-5 at high need schools, helping to build home libraries and prevent summer learning loss.
Why are home libraries so important?
Home libraries have been shown to be the most cost effective way of preventing summer learning loss.
The likelihood of being on track in literacy and numeracy “almost doubled if at least one book was available in a student’s home”
The “summer slide” is exacerbated by limited access to books during out-of-school time—a reality that has a more significant impact on students who live in lower income neighborhoods with “book deserts”.
Students who receive books for a home library from teachers, schools, and communities report an increased love of reading and an eagerness to share that love with parents, siblings, and friends.
