Our Senior Class of 2018 is setting the bar high for College Acceptances! This past week Christina T was accepted to Rice University, Stanford University and Duke University. She was also recently accepted to MIT. This is our second OSS Senior to be accepted to MIT! We also had another senior, Abhinav D recently get accepted to Georgia Tech and UC Berkeley University! Congratulations to all of our Seniors and their hard work this year. We are so proud of you!

As our Senior Class begins to wrap up their High School Journeys, our Junior Class is working hard to follow right in their place! We had not just one Junior qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program, we had THREE! These students qualified for this prestigious accomplishment based on their 2017 PSAT/NMSQT Scores! Congratulations to Russell A., Kevin R., Gideon F., their parents and teachers. We are so proud of you!

This past Saturday April 7th 2018 OSS held the BACE Exam for our biomedical students.

Our students have been working hard over the last three years in order to take this exam and students who pass the BACE exam will be certified Biotech Assistants. For more information on the BACE Exam, please see the article below.

Our Orcas not only work hard to achieve academic success but they also work hard to help each other succeed! In this newsletter you will find our March Students of the Month and our very first recipients of the "ORCA Character Award" ! Both awards were awarded to students based on their character. Congratulations to all recipients we are proud of this wonderful accomplishment!

As our Teacher Appreciation Week quickly approaches, we need your help to make this week a great success! Below you will find details regarding all the events taking place, including our Annual Teacher Appreciation Italian Dinner, that is open to all!

Last month our OSS Fighting Orkkas Fencing Team was featured on the USA Facebook Page. We are so proud of their hard work in their inaugural year and we are looking forward to watching them grow!

Our OSS Science Olympiad Team is always making sure they are challenging themselves to be the best! And it's no surprise that during their recent camping trip they worked on team building events to become more effective as a team! Congratulations to this team on another unforgettable year!

Orcas do not forget that we will have Saturday Leadership Academy and AP Studies tomorrow April 14th 2018, have a safe and wonderful weekend!

This past Saturday OSS had its very own BACE exam. The BACE exam is a certification exam for our Biomedical students! These students have taken almost 3 years of biomed. Students were tested not just on test information but also on practical laboratory techniques! This exam tests them on their knowledge over the past years, from culturing bacteria to separating DNA. Students who pass the BACE exam will be certified Biotech Assistants. Biotech Assistants can work in college or clinical labs! They can make much more than minimum wage while doing research in their field of interest. Results will be in within two weeks. Good work Orcas!

Attention Orlando Science Families!

Although we typically follow the OCPS Schedule, we will still have our regular Early Dismissal Schedule every Wednesday.
Students in Grades 7th and 8th will be released at their normal Wednesday time of 1:44 PM and students in grades in 9th and 12th will be released 1:48 PM.

Dear Orlando Science Family,

We are excited to announce that Orlando Science Middle/High School will be visited by an external review team from AdvancED on May 20th through May 22nd. This two-day process will focus on 11 STEM Indicators as the school is seeking to receive certification as a STEM school.

A team of visiting professionals representing the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (CASI) will evaluate our adherence to the 11 AdvancED STEM Indicators.

The duties of the team will include observing and reviewing routine functions and operations of our school, reviewing the 11 STEM indicators’ artifacts and meeting with groups of stakeholders (students, parent/community members, faculty, staff, and administrators).

We are excited to show our successful practices in STEM education to the review team. We also look forward to receiving their professional feedback regarding the areas of improvement as part of our growth in STEM education.

Jenny is a dedicated member of Key Club, a community outreach club. She is also involved in the OSS school community as the 10th grade representative and continues to play a big role in many community events.

Ramyanaga N. 7th grade

Ramyanaga consistently participates in classroom discussions appropriately and is polite with classmates. Along with these qualities, she displays respect toward adults and staff members around campus. Her positive attitude spreads to other students daily.

Connections Department helps “Celebrate diversity”

Jonathan J. 7th grade

Jonathan helped tremendously on World Language Night and brought a dish from Brazil to share. He sang Portuguese and Turkish songs while also performing the Flamenco dance from Spain at the event.

Science Department Always “Advocates for a safe learning Environment”

Alexis D, 9th grade

Alexis is an active member of the Model UN and FBLA Team, NHS and the Anti-Bullying Committee. Alexis also designed the club t-shirt for Anti-Bullying Club. She is also extremely polite and promotes a culture of respect.

English Departments Encourages “Striving for excellence within a stimulating environment”

Isaiah S. 7th grade

Isaiah is actively engaged with the material that he is learning in the classroom. He is part of the Anti-Bullying Committee and tries hard to make sure that no one feels left out. He is heavily involved with the Student Government Association as well. He uses his leadership skills effectively to help guide others and to foster a sense of community within his classroom and at school.

A Message from the Counselor

Greetings All!

As a school counselor, I receive many e-mails/calls from parents wanting to know what they can do to help their child succeed. Here are a few basic tips!

Expectations

Expect your child to succeed, and their chances for success improve greatly. Expect them to come up short, and the odds are that they will. Children are very aware of how their parents view them, and they often tailor their actions to those views. Communicate your expectations and your rationale behind them to your child. It’s important to base your expectations on your child, not yourself. Remember each child is an individual who has strengths and weaknesses like all individuals.

Environment/Schedule

Create a suitable environment for homework. Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to study. If you do not have internet access at home, please inform the school, they can help brainstorm about ways to get around this roadblock. Create, with your child, a daily schedule. They should study or do homework every day (except for special family events, of course) no more than two hours per day. Be available during homework time to look over homework and give suggestions, but never do your child’s homework for them. Be interested and have them teach you something. Teaching someone else a concept is one of the best ways to learn!

Balance

Academic success is important when it comes to our children. However, teaching our kids how to balance their individual well-being while succeeding academically is also an important skill. This skill of balancing wellness and work is one that can carry them forward into their adult lives. Kids have very little control over their lives. Please don’t pack their schedules full of after school activities without their knowledge. Children of every age need time to relax, play, workout, and take a brain break after their very rigorous school day. Together, choose a couple of activities per week that help them follow their passions or interests. Make sure it fits in your schedule and that you still have time to do schoolwork and enjoy family time.

Lastly, attitude is everything! Consider your attitude about learning new concepts or following directions at your place of work. Keep in mind, children hear everything, and they learn from you daily!

Teacher Grams

NJHS and NHS will be selling Teacher Grams for $1 during the week of April 23rd 2018- April 27th 2018. During the week of Teacher Appreciation Week, all Teacher Grams will be delivered. Grams may be purchased before school in the cafeteria or after school in the dismissal area. All Proceeds for Teacher Grams will be donated to Relay for Life!

Teacher Appreciation Spirit Week-April 30th 2018 to May 4th 2018

We will be holding a TA Spirit Week to raise funds for our Teacher Appreciation Week Events and Activities. The cost is $2 per day or $5 for the week, passes may be purchased from Mrs. Sturm(RM 124) beginning Monday April 23rd 2018 to Friday April 27th 2018. Teacher Appreciation Italian Night Dinner Wednesday May 9th 2018

OSS families are invited to join us as we honor our Lynx Campus faculty and staff with an Italian dinner from 6-8pm in the middle/high school cafeteria.

Dinner is a choice of Meat (Halal ground beef, red sauce, ricotta and mozzarella cheese) or Vegetarian Lasagna, (grilled zucchini and squash, red bell pepper, red sauce, ricotta and mozzarella cheese) bread sticks, unlimited salad, dessert and drink. Teachers and staff are complimentary, guests are $5 adults and $3 ages 10 and under.

OSS Science Olympiad Middle School Team Members were invited by one of our OSS parents, Mr. Jeyasingam, to a day camp at Moss Park. Our students participated in leadership and team building games to enhance their ability to work together and think outside the box. The parents were involved in the games and worked with the students’. We also went on a nature hike, had a cook out, a campfire and as always, they played soccer. It was a great learning experience as well as a lot of fun for all involved and we would like to Thank Mr. Jeyasingam and Tony Cepero of Scout Venture Crew 617 for organizing this event. We look forward to the next camp which will be in the Fall prior to the start of the Science Olympiad competition season.

We rolled out a new addition to our Morning Announcements! Each day our Orcas will be given a "STEM Word of the Day" and at the end of each week, students may submit a list of the words given to be entered to win a free dress down day! Rho Kappa is a social studies honor society that consists of 11th graders and 12th graders. We help put more focus on social studies as an honor society. Recently we held a Black history month assembly featuring a guest speaker Fire Marshall Tammy Hughes. Ms. Hughes spoke to our students about Black excellence and her career as a Fire Marshall. We also held a Black history month poster contest. Students who participated made a poster focusing on an African American who helped society. Each grade participating had a different theme to focus on like literature, sports, etc. Rho Kappa is open to any upcoming 11th/12th grade students next year to join our honor society.

Dear OSS Parents and Guardians ,

We like to find ways to communicate with parents to support our mutual involvement in your child’s education. As part of OSS tradition, we are organizing home visits as a way to reach out to our families and get to know them better. We would like to set up a time for a few of your students teachers to have a brief 20-30 minute home visit. Home visits are an effective way to establish positive contact and communication with families. They are not a replacement for parent-teacher conferences, but are a process through which teachers demonstrate their support for students’ families by visiting the home environment where the family feels comfortable. Home visits originate from a sincere desire to assist and work with families. We will be glad to visit you and your child at a convenient time. If you would like to host a home visit, please select one of the days below. We will be organizing quarterly home visits. If you are not available during first quarter, you always can choose a day later on in the school year. We look forward to visiting you!
