NOVEMBER 10, 2023
Dear Families -
Thank you to those of you who attended Conferences earlier this week! We hope your child had a successful first eLearning day on Tuesday. It's important for your student to follow all of their teachers' instructions on eLearning Days for both their classroom teacher AND their related arts teacher.
Today we celebrated Veterans Day with an Assembly and some special guests - relatives of our students who are Veterans themselves! We hope those who joined us had a great time and we thank them for their service. A special shout-out to Mrs. Bielat for organizing this year's Veterans Day assembly and poster contest. We had some excellent submissions! Poster Contest Winners are:
Emma Breitzka - Kdg
Grant Pivarnik - 1st grade
Ivy Ellerthorpe - 2nd grade
Lucas Johnston - 3rd grade
Noah Shumate - 4th grade
Maggie Myers - overall
We hope you and your family can join us next Friday evening at the Barnes & Noble store in Valparaiso for our annual Barnes & Noble Night, sponsored by our PTO! Starting at 6:00 pm we'll have programming with a story from me, Mrs. Storm, and some performances by a couple of classes! You can also purchase items from the store and a portion of those proceeds support Bailly!
As the weather gets colder, it's important to remind you about our Snow Procedures for students and outdoor recess. In order to play IN the snow, students need the following 5 items when there is snow on the ground: coat, gloves/mittens, snow boots, snow pants, and a hat or hood. If they do not have ALL five of these items, they'll still be permitted to play outside but they will have to avoid the snow. We appreciate your attention to this and your understanding!
Now that we are moving through Quarter 2, linked below are the standards-based grading documents for you to review for your child's grade level. These outline the standards our learners are focusing on from now through December, as well as the expected levels of mastery for each one.
Below I'm again sharing some important IREAD testing information for families of 2nd and 3rd graders:

Counselor Connection from Ms. Kellogg
This week in our Social Emotional lessons in kindergarten your student learned two ways to help themselves feel calm when they encounter strong feelings. Students practiced asking for help and slow breathing.
In first grade students learned to use body language and context clues to figure out when someone feels frustrated. They practiced looking at the person’s face and body, as well as thinking about what’s going on in the situation. They learned about a new strategy for feeling calm when they get frustrated, slow counting.
In second grade students learned that people can have different feelings in the same situation because of their experiences. Students talked about situations at school when people may have different feelings about the same thing.
In third grade students learned words for three degrees of happiness: content, happy, and excited. Students worked with a partner and shared about times when they felt content, happy, and excited.
In fourth grade students practiced rethinking a situation they’ve personally experienced. Sometimes strong emotions tell us that something is wrong or that we’re in danger.
Students learned to decide when they can use rethinking and when they should ask for help.
It was wonderful to see many of you at conferences this week. We are so happy to partner with you and your student. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to me.
Have a Wonderful Weekend!

2024-2025 Family Friendly Survey for Families
In keeping with our Core Values, Duneland School Corporation is committed to fostering partnerships to improve the quality of life in our community. One of our most important partnerships is with our families. As we strive to continue to build upon and strengthen our family partnerships, DSC is applying for renewal from the Indiana Department of Education as an IDOE “Family Friendly Schools” corporation. In doing so, we will continue to “focus on addressing students' academic, physical, emotional, and social needs while providing the needed resources and fostering the active involvement of their families through schools and the community.” (Indiana Department of Education Family Friendly Schools Handbook)
Please help us as we continue to support our students and community by completing the IDOE online survey by November 21, 2023.
Your ongoing support in educating the children of our community is greatly appreciated!

Elementary School Day Schedule
Our school doors will open at 7:40 AM each day, which is when we will start operating our car line. Students will not be permitted to enter the school building before 7:40 AM.
ARRIVAL
Students are permitted to enter the building at 7:40. School starts at 8:00.
When students enter, they can choose to have breakfast (go to the cafeteria) or not (go to classroom).
We ask that all students strive to be at school by 7:50 a.m. so they are ready to start on time.
All cars dropping off students should pull up to the curb and follow car line staff members’ instructions. If a parent would like to come into the building with your child, please use one of the angled parking spots and walk your child into the office so we can keep the flow of traffic moving efficiently.
Students who arrive after 8:00 AM by car must have a parent come into the building and sign in as to the reason the student is tardy.
DISMISSAL
Student dismissal begins at 2:15 PM.
It is important to build consistency with students’ routines, so families will need to select the “default” mode of transportation their student will use on most days.
Students who must go home a different way than usual must have a note signed by the parent. Phone calls or emails are not sufficient as we may miss those messages during the school day or not receive them in time.
Students may only go home with people who are designated to pick them up. Please make sure to fill out this information at Open House or within the first week of school.
Please see the school documents that show and explain our dismissal process.
