A MESSAGE FROM MR. LUCITA
In a time when we are all seeking answers to the various items impacted by COVID-19, we often end up with responses and data that change almost daily. Unfortunately, our Jaguar Band is in a similar situation. However, there are a few areas where we can provide you with definitive answers.
We can tell you that we will save our Young Person’s Guide to the Neitherworld marching show for next season. Keeping in mind our students' health, the financial cost of the production as it impacts our students and parents, and the current continuous state of uncertainty, we have made the difficult decision to retain this show for next year's season. Although it is disappointing not to perform the show this year, we are in a very unique situation in that we have no seniors. This means that no students are graduating this year and every student that would have had the opportunity to participate in this incredible production will have that same opportunity next year! Also, this additional time gives us our final grade of students and our first band of 9th – 12th graders. This will undoubtedly elevate the excitement, the potential, and the WOW factor of this production!
Another question that can be answered is in regard to the financial cost for this year. In recognition of the negative impact that many families are facing financially, we have decided to reduce the student fees significantly this year. All Jag Band, and Color Guard students, will have a total fee of $100. This fee will be the same regardless of the student’s grade, instrument or position. We will still provide khaki shorts for all of our incoming band freshmen, as well as a custom 2020 dri-fit shirt for all band students and still cover many various other band costs associated with the year. Should our Johnson Winter Guard be able to have a full competitive season in the spring, there will be an altered fee for that group; however, it will still be kept to a minimum. If anyone should need assistance with these reduced fees, please contact us and we will work together to find a solution.
We do want everyone to know that we recognize there are still many unknowns. What type of marching band season will we have? Will we compete? What will football games look like? Etcetera. We do have a design for a show that we know everyone will enjoy. Our current plan is to have a marching show that continues where “jOURney” left off and shares with everyone what and who Johnson HS is and what we represent. The title of the show is “JOHNSON; This Is Us!” The closing song of this production is scheduled to include “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman, and will include joint performances with the Johnson HS Choir, the Johnson HS Rosettes, the Johnson HS Cheerleaders and several other groups and individuals all on the field simultaneously in a production guaranteed to bring our community together! It truly is, “JOHNSON; This Is Us!”
There are many uncertainties in the band world right now. What will UIL decide for marching band contest and football games? What will they announce Monday? Will there be BOA this year? What is our summer band schedule now that Hays CISD has adjusted the school calendar? We hope we will be able to answer these and many other questions soon. What we ask from you, parents and students, is to please be patient and give grace during these unprecedented times. Please keep an eye on email, Remind and the band calendar, and, as updates arrive, we will push them out to you using those various formats. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to help in any way we can.
We will make this a great year for our Jag Band members and families!
CHANGES AND UPDATES FOR 2020 - 21
Summer Band Calendar
Should changes be made to the Summer Band calendar, Mr. Lucita will include that information is his update to parents and students later this week and Mrs. Mendez will update the Charms calendar.
Uniform Changes
The band will not be using the black polos this fall. These polos are ordered through the Jaguar Band online vendor (TMF), not the band boosters. For freshman band members, those items were just not ordered and, therefore, money was not spent. For returning members, please know that the band boosters will be reaching out to TMF to seek reimbursements for the purchased polos. Please also know that, should refunds for black polos not be possible, Mr. Lucita has assured us that they will still be used at a later time.
To also lower costs for this year, we will not be purchasing marching shoes. Marching shoes were not purchased through TMF, but rather through the band booster web store. Therefore, please know that, if you are a returning member who ordered marching shoes through the band booster website, this money will be refunded to you.
The Color Guard will be getting a 2 new custom guard tops (1 for pep rally days and 1 for performances), 1 pair of shorts, dance shoes (same style as last year), and body tights. Please send any questions regarding color guard to colorguard@johnsonbands.com.
Band and Guard Fee Reduction
As Mr. Lucita shared in his message above, the fees have been reduced. Last week Mr. Lucita shared taht if the band/guard financial costs decrease this year due to the district guidelines, the band will credit the difference towards next year's fees. If you have paid your band fee in full and have questions regarding how the difference from the reduction in fees will be handled, please contact Mrs. Mendez, JHS Band Secretary at: tracye.mendez@hayscisd.net
Band Boosters meal plans
Should Mr. Lucita notify families later this week that plans have change in the fall that impact the number of games or performances that the band/guard will be performing at or attending, Band Boosters will provide prorated refunds for purchased meal plans that will not be necessary. Please know that the Band Boosters will reach out regarding ALL booster refunds (shoes and meal plans) once decisions are regarding games and competitions are final.
