A Letter From Principal Mills........
Dear Families,
It is so great to have your students back at Bridgeport! Their enthusiasm is contagious! Here is a little information you might be curious about:
Specials
We have three specials at Bridgeport: PE, Music and PLUSS (PE Learning Using Small Spaces.) PLUSS is taught on the stage by Mrs. Alarcon and it focuses on physical activity that can be done in small spaces, like yoga or aerobics. Music is taught by Ms. Delgado. This year many grades will share their learning during an evening music performance. More details to come. PE is taught by Mrs. Reed with an emphasis on both teaching skills and keeping kids moving!
Each class visits one special per day for 30 minutes on a rotating basis. If possible, please send your students to school in sturdy closed toe shoes on PE and PLUSS days. Sandals and rubber boots are not ideal. Your student will probably know their special each day! But if not, their teacher can tell you the rotation for their class.
Additionally, students visit the library for about 20 minutes every other week. They can check out books though the exact number and whether or not they take them home varies by grade level. Library check out will start towards the end of this month once everyone has settled in.
Lunch & Recess
Everyday students have lunch for 20 minutes followed by 20 minutes of recess. They have an additional five minutes to transition to and from each location. Teachers help students wash hands or use hand sanitizer prior to lunch. While it doesn’t feel like much time, we find that students are usually finished eating and ready to socialize well before the 20 minutes is up! In addition to lunch recess, every class also takes an additional morning or afternoon recess with their grade level.
We strongly encourage all families to apply for free or reduced breakfast and lunch before September 30! We have paper applications in the office and are more than happy to help you complete them! Alternatively, you can click here to fill it out online. That same link will also take you to the site where you can sign in and load funds onto an account if you will pay for school lunch for your students.
Teaching & Learning
This month at Bridgeport we are preparing students for an incredible year of learning! Teachers are working hard to set up routines and build a positive classroom community. Here are a few of the highlights:
PAX & Expectations: PAX means “peace” in greek and it is our district’s behavior management system. We teach students how to show effort, kindness, and safety in each of the places they go in our school. They create a class list of what they want to see, hear, and feel more of and less of in each location. Excellent choices are recognized with “Tiny Tootles” that students can contribute towards a class goal.
Math: In September, most grade levels will focus on number sense to start the year. That means really understanding how to break numbers apart and make connections between them. It looks different at each grade level. This year we are working to build students’ verbal skills for talking about numbers and their ability to explain their thought process.
Reading: At Bridgeport, our students spend about two hours each day on reading skills. Those two hours are broken into very small periods of time, especially for our younger students, and include a variety of engaging activities like small group instruction. In small groups students work with an instructor on skills that are just a little bit beyond what they would be able to do independently. We have a few different assessments that we use to help determine what skills students should work on. Often groups change during the school year as students’ skills develop and their needs change. Classes will likely start their small groups towards the end of September after whole group routines are well established.
There is so much more to share and not enough newsletter space! If I can tell you more about these topics or others, please reach out anytime. Thank you for sharing your children with us. It is a pleasure to teach them and watch them grow!
Sincerely,
Jordan Mills
Principal

Student Medications In Our Health Room
Medicamentos de estudiantes en la oficina
Parents,
We would like to remind parents about medications your students may need to take during the school day/year. For obvious safety reasons, ANY type of medication, whether it is prescription or over the counter, MUST BE checked into the office by a parent coming into the office to fill out a medication form.
PLEASE do not allow your student to bring/carry medications, inhalers, creams, not even cough drops to school unless authorized to do so.
************************************
Padres,

We love our four-legged friends, but please do not bring them on school grounds while students are present as stated in school board policy KGB. The excitement of dismissal can make even the friendliest of dogs nervous and more likely to snap.
********************************************
