Here At JRB
April 15, 2022
Please take time to relax and enjoy your extra family time during vacation week!
The Long Haul
Please take a moment to congratulate your child(ren) on making it through the longest haul of in school learning they have been through in at least 3 years. This stretch from February to April vacation is a long and busy one, but the students here at JRB have been pushing through it and working hard. While we make an effort to constantly provide positive praise for the work we see at school, it means a ton for folks at home to recognize the great effort as well!
Grade 5 and 4 MCAS This Coming Week
When we return from our vacation week, grade 3 will have MCAS on Wednesday and Thursday. We also will grab any make-up students on those days. Again, please make sure student Chromebooks are fully charged on testing days.

Come in this week and see what you can find that may be yours from the lost and found. Items will be donated after the week of vacation.
Title 1 ELA Tips For All Students
Smith Squad Snippets
Building vocabulary with your student does not have to include fancy flash cards and nonfiction books. Vocabulary is built through conversations of all kinds. Just by listening to you tell a story or listening as you are talking through a task that you are doing will allow students to pick up on vocabulary words, as well as teach them about inflection and conversational skills. Here are some great ways that you can encourage vocabulary at home with your students.
Music Room News
Grades K-4 have been busy learning their songs for our Memorial Day Assembly on Friday, May 27th, 2022. Each child in grades 1-4 has received a copy of their grade’s song lyrics to practice at home between music class rotations. Grades 3 & 4 can also find the song lyrics on their Music Google Classrooms.
This event is held during the school day for the entire student body and staff, and features songs sung by each grade level and readings by some of our 5th grade students as well as local Veterans. It is a solemn event held to remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It is wonderful to be able to hold this event live and in-person after last year’s recorded version!
Mrs. Lordan is in contact with AWCM to film the assembly, so that parents can watch it later. More details to follow!

Notes From The Nurses Office
Happy Spring!
This weekend officially marks the start of Spring! With the Spring comes warmer weather, sunshine, and hopefully more time for all to enjoy outdoor sports, hiking, gardening, or just playing outside. This is a good time to remind everyone that the prevalence of ticks will also be increasing. Be sure to check your student(s) and yourselves daily after spending some time outside, as ticks like to share your living and playing places! For more information on ticks, please click on the following link. https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/index.html
Health Screenings
Massachusetts has resumed the requirement for all health screenings to be completed by the end of the school year.
Vision screenings are done on all students in grades K-5; stereopsis is an additional vision screening done with students in grades K-3. Hearing screenings are done on students in grades K-3. Notices of any failures are sent to the parent by the school nurse for follow-up. Results of the follow up will be returned to the school nurse.
Height and weight screenings are completed in 1st grade and 4th grade.
All 5th grade students are checked for scoliosis, unless notification from the parent/guardian has been received by the school nurse to opt out. If you prefer for your student to not participate in this screening, and have not already notified the school nurse, please do so by sending an email, or written note with your request to opt out. Parents/guardians are notified if additional evaluation is needed by the student’s primary care physician.
Physical Exams
Please continue to send in your student’s physical exam documentation from their medical provider. AWRSD requires that all kindergarten and third grade students have a current physical exam on file in the nursing office.
Thank you to all who have donated underwear, clothes, socks, shoes, and boots to the nurse's office! Our supply seems to be replenished at this time. We greatly appreciate your generosity!
