Athey Notes
September 19th, 2022
Welcome to Week 4!
Welcome to Week 4! We are having a lot of fun building community and school spirit! You've heard of Yertle the Turtle? Well, we have Hertel the...Cougar! Have you ever had a time when you couldn't make it rhyme? Mr. Hertel (our amazing Assistant Principal) dressed up as our school Cougar Mascot to get students pumped up for their leadership meeting with the school administration.
This week brought us Picture Day where your children put on their best smiles (make up day is October 25th, if you missed it). You can order online at mylifetouch.com with code EVTP2CHRX.
In Science classes students learned lab safety, the Doppler effect, began units in Astronomy, labs with M&M's, and what happens if you microwave Ivory Soap! You can learn all about this and so much more by attending Curriculum Night and visiting your child's teachers. We look forward to seeing you September 22nd at 6:30!
Sincerely,
Joel Sebastian

How to Help Your Student be Successful with Technology
Sign Up for Robotics!
Our long awaited start to our ACMS Robotics club has arrived! Is your student interested in joining us? If so, here's a bit of information about our Robotics Club.
For 6th graders, we partake in the FIRST Lego League program (FLL website: https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/fll).
For 7th and 8th graders, we follow the First Tech Challenge (FTC website: https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/ftc)
If your student is interested in participating in the program as listed above, please fill out this Google Form so I know to keep in contact with you.
Our teams are contingent on our amazing parents to volunteer as coaches and support. Meeting days will depend on volunteer availability. I am currently looking for coaches for both the FLL and FTC programs. In that same Google Form for the student sign-up, you may specify if you are interested and available to coach/volunteer for our super teams!
Looking forward to hearing from you.

In Case You Missed It From Last Week's Edition...
MAP Assessment
Interpreting Grades in the Grade Book
As we enter the third week of school, grades are starting to be entered for families and students to view in ParentVue and StudentVue. To ensure that families and students understand what they are seeing in gradebooks, we want to outline some of the common practices we have in place at Athey Creek this year.
Two common terms that you will see in all gradebooks are formative and summative. The term formative refers to tasks that a teacher uses to determine what learning a student has and/or has not completed. The term summative refers to assessments or final tasks that a teacher uses to evaluate a student’s content proficiency. Formative is the rehearsal/practice whereas summative is the competition/game/performance.
The formative tasks assigned to students are intentionally designed to create opportunities for students to grow in their learning with the end goal of achieving content mastery. These formative tasks are opportunities for students to “practice;” therefore, they are not part of the calculation that determines a student’s overall grade. For formative tasks, you will see the following codes in the gradebook:
T (Turned In) - The student turned in the task AND it was complete
INC (Incomplete) - The student turned in the task BUT it was not complete
NTI (Not Turned In) - The student did not turn in the task
EXC (Excused) - The student does not need to complete the task
Summative tasks are the means through which students demonstrate their level of content proficiency, therefore, summative tasks are the tasks that are used in the calculation of a student’s overall grade. For summative tasks, you will see the following numeric scores in the gradebook:
5 - Exceeding Expectations
4 - Proficient
3- Nearly Proficient
2 - In Progress
1 - Little to No Evidence
To ensure that the focus is on student learning, an overall letter grade will not be displayed for the first few weeks of school. To see how your student is progressing in their learning, please click on the gradebook for each class.
And now for something new -
6th Grade Game Night! Put on by YOUR PTSA!
Athey Creek Middle School will host its new Game Night to celebrate 6th graders (in place of Turning Point if you had students here pre-Covid) and allow them to get to know each other as they come together to create a new community. The events will include group activities, games including Game Truck, prizes, food and drinks and lots of laughs!
The event is on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 from 3:45 – 6:30pm with check-in right after school. Please pick up students by 6:30pm. We will provide snacks and dinner.
Please review this packet, complete the forms and return the following to the Game Night box in the front office by next Wednesday, September 14, 2022.
Contract: Required – Both Child and Parent need to read, complete and sign this form.
Emergency Form: Required – Parent needs to complete and sign this form.
Photo Exemption Form: Optional – If you don’t want your child photographed during this event, please complete and sign this form.
$20.00: Include cash or a check payable to Athey Creek PTSA (Scholarships are available for qualified students – please check at office.) *Please note: This will need to be a separate check from any other PTSA expenses.
To create a safe environment, there will be adult chaperones at this event. No one will be allowed to enter or leave the building without passing through a monitored check point. Please make sure your child knows there are to be no electronics at the event, including cell phones (which must be silenced and left in their backpack.) Questions? Contact Krista Oswald kristajoswald@gmail.com or Barbara Stratte barbarastratte@gmail.com.
We need volunteers to help this night run smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering please contact: Kristajoswald@gmail.com
