From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
I hope everyone has had a restful and relaxing weekend. We had a ton of fun and got some great work done during week 1 of Band Camp! Everyone is making great progress both playing and marching. This week, we will begin putting those two big pieces of the puzzle together as we get ready for our Preview Show on Friday night!
It's Spirit Week this week! I encourage all the students to get into the spirit of each day, and we will have a prize for the "most spirited" person each day.
- Monday: Wacky Socks Day
- Tuesday: Twin Day
- Wednesday: Pop Culture Day
- Thursday: Class Colors Day
- Friday: WPHS Spirit Day
Remember that each student must come prepared to each day of Band Camp with a filled water jug (at least 1/2 gallon recommended). This year, we will be providing each student a Winter Park Band water jug for use during marching band rehearsals and performances. The initial plan was to have those water jugs ready for Band Camp this week, but unfortunately our distributor sent us the incorrect color jugs. We will pass out the water jugs as soon as they arrive and are ready.
For a brief moment, let's talk about finances. Fair Share Payment 1 is our first required payment coming due on Wednesday, 7/27 - the second Wednesday of Band Camp. Families have the option to either pay the remainder of the Fair Share for the entire school year ($225) or make the first payment ($100) of the payment plan as listed on the 2022-2023 Band Financial Obligations Form everyone completed for registration. Also due 7/27 are payments for Marching Band Shoes (new/replacement, $38) and Extra Show Shirts (optional and available to Band extended families, $10/shirt). Students will be fitted for shoes during Band Camp. More information on extra show shirts below.
All new/incoming Band families must still use this link to make Band payments for the time being: www.schoolpay.com/parent/mip/Meen. This includes Fair Share, Marching Shoes, Extra Show Shirts, Spirit Wear, etc. The county still has not made the "flip" with student accounts from their middle school to WPHS, and that is not planned to happen until the first week of August. When you go to add an item to your cart on this SchoolPay link, a popup will appear in the website. Please select "Thanks, just want to pay" in green and then either add more items into your cart or proceed to payment. Do not log into your SchoolPay account, or only items from their middle school will appear. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me.
Last week was a ton of fun, and there is only more in store this week. Every Band family is cordially invited to Family Fun Night on Wednesday at 7:30 PM, right after camp. Bring the rest of the family and come join your kids and other parents out at D-Lot for some Jeremiah's, a little social time and maybe some friendly kickball competition. If it rains, we'll have our "family fun" in the auditorium instead.
On Friday, July 29, the Band will give its first performance of "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road" at our Preview Show. Weather permitting, the Preview Show will take place following the Mandatory Band Booster Meeting out at the marching band practice field at D-Lot, the northeast corner of campus. If weather does not allow us to perform outside, the performance will take place in the Auditorium. The student uniform for the show is our summer uniform - 2022 Show Shirt, tan/khaki shorts, a belt, athletic shoes, and socks. The Show Shirt will be passed out on Friday afternoon at the dinner break. Students must provide all other parts of the uniform and bring it with them to Band Camp on Friday morning to change into later in the day.
Let's have a fun second week of Band Camp!
Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson
Hey Band! What a great first week of band camp! Our kids worked hard and looks like they had a good time too! Lots of things to think about as we look at the upcoming week .. here we go:
A couple "parent-y" things that the mom in me thinks about with 140 kids in and out of the hot sun all day and all week .. make sure your student brings that FILLED water jug (ice AND water) every day for camp .. and a stick of deodorant and extra sunscreen in his or her backpack would be a good thing too. This week, we're serving dinners, but students need to bring LUNCH MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY .. so don't forget to have your band kid bring lunch along with that water, hat, sunscreen and deodorant!
A big thanks to our uniform fitting and meal serving parent volunteers this week .. we cannot do band camp or band without that parent involvement! We could use another dinner server or two for both this Thursday and this Friday (3:50 - 5:30 each day), so sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fadab22aa8-marching
Family Fun Night is Wednesday at 7:30 pm .. right after camp .. bring the rest of the family and come join your kids and other parents out at D-Lot for some Jeremiah's, a little social time and maybe some friendly kickball competition. If it rains, we'll have our "family fun" in the auditorium instead.
Our first BAND BOOSTER meeting (a.k.a. BAND PARENT meeting) is THIS FRIDAY at 6 pm in the band room .. super important that we have all parents there .. and the preview show commences right afterwards!
And don't forget that your band kid can raise a good amount of money selling ads for the Band Concert Program that we print each year! Ad sales deadline is September 9. More about this at Friday's Booster Meeting. Contact Julie Capps (Program Ad Sales Coordinator) with questions (wpbandprogram@gmail.com or juliedcapps@aol.com).
Watch your email this week for a "sign up genius" for uniform fitting and prep help starting in August during the Tuesday evening marching band rehearsals. Many hands make light work!
Last thing .. parents or students, if you have ANY questions or concerns, please reach out to the directors, me or other Booster Board members (http://www.winterparkhsband.com/band-boosters.html) .. communication (or even over-communication) is encouraged! We are here to help!
Last, last thing .. have a great week #2 of Band Camp 2022 .. kudos to our directors, student leadership and parent volunteers in prepping and running a busy and productive camp week! Go Band!

Program Ads and Sponsorships Fundraiser - Raise Money Now to Offset your Fair Share Payments and NYC Trip Costs!
Hello WPHS Band Families!
The season for selling ads in the Winter Park High Band program is well underway. If you are not familiar with this program, the Winter Park Band Concert Program features pictures of the Band as well as information about the band’s instructor and members. The program is distributed free at all concerts throughout the school year and includes local business ads, student dedications and sponsorships purchased by local businesses and families.
With the band scheduled to take a group trip to New York City in June 2023, it is important you understand how purchasing or selling an ad in the band program can help you save money on that trip. Any ad sold by your student can help defray your financial obligations to Band, including payment for the NYC trip. Once payment for the ad is received, the student’s Band account will be credited with 60% of the ad revenue that he/she sells, depending on the Band’s printing cost.
Here's how selling just one ad can benefit you:
- Sell a full-page ad ($325) to your kid’s orthodontist? You’ll get an estimated $195 credit on your account that can then be used toward the cost of the NYC trip.
- Celebrate your Band Student with a ½ page student dedication? While the ad will cost you $175, you will then get a credit back of roughly $105 that can go back towards your payments to band. This is especially popular with Senior families, but the family of any student can put a shoutout into the program.
The three types of advertising available are:
- Business Ad: Connect your local business or a business you frequent with audiences attended WPHS band performances throughout the school year.
- Student Dedication: Celebrate your student’s participation in the WPHS band program with a ¼, ½ or full-page ad that can include multiple pictures.
- Sponsorship: Become a “Friend of Winter Park Band” with a monetary donation and recognition on the sponsorship list. This is a great option for family and friends who ask how they can support your student in band.
The deadline for selling or purchasing an ad is quickly approaching. So that the program can be printed in time for the first home concert, all ads must be purchased or sold by Friday, September 9, 2022. Forms for the ad program can be accessed on the WPHS Band website by clicking About>Band Boosters. All files are located under the section Program Ads and Sponsors 2022.
Have additional questions? Contact Julie Capps, Program Ads & Sponsors Coordinator at 704- 258-3306 or juliedcapps@aol.com.

Pride of the Wildcats - Winter Park Band Fleet Vehicle Support and Improvement
We are very proud of our Operations side of the Winter Park Band. We have a dedicated group of parents that take the Winter Park Band & Color Guard to all their events. However, without the use of the large tractor trailer that transports our equipment to and from each marching band event and the small trailer for color guard the task would be next to impossible.
Through the years, the operations group has made many changes to the trailers to improve the functionality for the Winter Park Band. Historically, all of the monies have been raised through private contributions of a select groups of parents and through the Alumni Foundation. Because of this the need of a full fundraiser event to deflect the cost of the band operations was never really until now.
In effort to maintain our large trailer’s top-notch condition, we are planning to do some MAJOR repairs and improvements to the trailer that is now in its 15th year of service for WPHS band. Additionally, we need to either replace (preferable) the small trailer or make it road worthy again.
Some of the items on our list of improvements are costly, including:
- Repairing some minor damage to larger trailer
- Repainting the lower section of the large trailer
- Rewrapping the upper section of the large trailer
- Replace wheel bearings on front axle
- Moving the back stairway to the back of the trailer
- Replacing or repairing the small trailer
- And other improvements to keep our kids and volunteers safe.
Since we are re-wrapping the large trailer, we will be selling sponsor spots on the larger trailer to defray the cost. There are 10 spots that are available for $1,000 each and the entire front of the trailer for $5,000. These opportunities are a great way to support the Winter Park Band and they are also tax deductible.
Please contact Keith Gavin at kgavin@sscands.com for further information on donations or to provide the goods or services to the improvements that are so desperately needed.
