NEWS FROM THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT
Attention Sophomores:
The Sophomore Class Counselors invite parents to an evening presentation on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 6:30pm in the CB West Auditorium. Topics to be covered include Program Planning for 11th grade; PSAT results; and preparing for college admission exams. All of these topics will be covered directly with students during 1st / 2nd semester English classes, but students are welcome to attend.
Attention Juniors:
The Junior Class Counselors will host a Parent/Student Information Session on Wednesday evening, January 30, 2019 at 7:00 pm in the CBW Auditorium. Topics will include Program Planning for Senior Year, Testing timeline for Spring; College search activities and FAQ’s; and Career Plan 11 (NEW this year!). Parents and students are encouraged to attend.
Attention Seniors:
- Mid-Year Reports, containing your grades from courses completed in first semester, will automatically be sent to each college to which you have applied. You do not need to submit any forms requesting these to be sent out. Mid-Years will be sent as soon as possible after grades are posted to your transcripts (approximately February 8, 2019).
- Scholarships – The Guidance Office has posted many scholarships on Naviance, and more scholarships come in every day! In your Naviance account, click on the “Colleges Tab,” the “Scholarships and Money” link, and then ‘Scholarship List” link. You can filter the list by topical area, or sort by application deadline date. Be sure to follow all directions as indicated by the individual scholarship listings. Please visit the Scholarships page of the Guidance Website for links to Naviance and other scholarship search databases.
Program Planning
Tenth and Eleventh Grade Counselors are in the process of visiting 1st semester English classes to review course selection for next year. (They will visit all 2nd semester English classes during the first week of the new semester.) The Student Portal for Course Registration opened on Friday, January 11th, and will remain open until Sunday, February 3th at 11pm. During the month of February, counselors will meet individually with students to review course selections and answer students’ questions. Peer Tutoring for West students:
The West Tutoring Academy is available to assist students who need extra help. Peer tutoring is available every Tuesday from 2:30pm to 3:30pm in the school library. During these times, any student who needs assistance with any course can come to the library and meet with a peer tutor. Students must arrive at 2:30pm, but can leave whenever they are finished with their work. If you have questions about this program, please call the Guidance Office at 267-893-2512.
Keystone Testing Information 2018-2019
Information Regarding January Keystone Testing:
Students currently enrolled in Algebra 1 and/or Biology will be administered the corresponding Keystone Assessment(s) during the month of January:
Algebra 1 and Biology Blocks 1 and 3 January 14th and January 15th
Algebra 1 and Biology Blocks 2 and 4 (flipped schedule) January 16th and January 17th
Makeups for Algebra 1 and Biology will be scheduled, as needed, up through January 18th.
Testing Information For Students - Power Point
State Assessment Proficiency Requirements:
Currently, PDE requires students in the class of 2021 and beyond to have reached proficiency on each of the three Keystone Exams prior to graduation. Students are encouraged to retake the test if proficiency is not reached on the first attempt.

First Semester Final Exam Dates
The Board of School Directors approved a revised calendar and schedule for High School First Semester Final Exams.
The High School Final Exam schedule is as follows:
January 23rd - This is a full school day and a regular bell schedule. World Language and English exams will be given in class.
January 24th – Final exam schedule: Math - 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM and Science 9:30 AM- 11:00 AM.
January 25th – Final exam schedule: Social Studies - 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM and Make up/Conflict exams - 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM.
January 28th - Half day schedule with dismissal at 10:45 AM. All classes will meet on this day. This is also the last day of the second marking period.
Students must report to school on January 24th and 25th if they have a final exam and if they need to make up work in a course(s). Detailed information can be found here.

Parent Positive Event
Our third Parent Positive event will be held on Thursday, February 7th at 7PM at Lenape Middle School. This Parent Positive Event is sponsored by the district.

“What to Expect and How to Help Your Children Transition Smoothly” will be the topic presented in a relaxed, informal workshop by Dr. Christina Carson-Sacco. Dr. Carson-Sacco is a psychologist and practice owner of The Center for Neuropsychology & Counseling, with offices in Warrington and Lafayette Hill. Information and Announcements
The daily announcements offer the most comprehensive listing of meetings, fundraisers, and events in our school. You can watch the daily announcements scrolling on TV monitors throughout the building. In addition, you can access the announcements each day by visiting the CB West homepage: https://www.cbsd.org/domain/3037.
Look for club and student activities fliers posted on bulletin boards and tack strips throughout our school.
On Mondays, we air a live stream broadcast from our TV Studio called “The Black and Gold.” This show highlights information about some of the biggest events and initiatives in our school.
On Fridays, we air episodes of Chatterbux. Chatterbux is a TV show produced by members of the Media Production classes. Chatterbux highlights a variety of aspects of student life here at CB West.

CB West Parent Council
We look forward to continuing our partnership with parents through the 2018-2019 Central Bucks West Parent Council. Membership to the council is open to all interested CB West parents.
Meetings are scheduled for the following Wednesdays in the Tower Room off of the Main Lobby, beginning at 9:00 AM and concluding at 10:30 AM:

EPREP
The Central Bucks School District offers a standardized testing prep system, ePrep, to all its students. This free web-based program helps students prepare for the PSAT, SAT and ACT. There are practice tests, test-taking tips, and instructional videos that explain how to do the problem(s) that may have been answered incorrectly during the practice session. All CB West sophomores have been registered with accounts. They should log in with their CBSD student email and the password 2018. Any students who are interested in accessing ePrep but do not have an account should contact Ms. Graney in the CB West Library for an account.
Good News About CB West Students
Walker Anderson Wins Prestigious Award
Congratulations to Walker Anderson who has been named a top 300 scholar in the 78th Regeneron Science Talent Search—the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors. This prestigious honor earned Walker, a CB West STEM Research Club Leadership Council member, $2,000 as well as a $2,000 prize for CB West to use for STEM-related activities. The next level of competition will see prizes increase precipitously to $25,000 and $250,000 for top 40 finalists and the overall award winner respectively. Congratulations and good luck Walker!
CB West FBLA
CB West Future Business Leaders of America are learning about the importance of community support and nonprofit businesses. This year, CBW FBLA has elected to help raise funds for the Ivy Hill Therapeutic Equestrian Center located in Perkasie Pa. Ivy Hill’s mission is to offer therapeutic programs for individuals with special needs utilizing an equine experience. Ivy Hill has helped many children, adolescents and adults achieve goals never imaginable and FBLA is very excited to help raise funds for the center. On February 23, Ivy Hill will hold a fundraising event at the Pine Crest Country Club in Montgomeryville, PA. Our FBLA students will be asking local businesses for support in the way of sponsorships, donations and/or baskets for the event. This is a great learning experience for our business students and a great opportunity for our community to show their support for a program that changes lives.

West Boys Track and Field
West Boys Track and Field crossed the icy Delaware to compete at the historic Lavino Relays at Lawrenceville Prep on Saturday, January 12th.
The Bucks “A” 4x800 meter relay (Roman Katona, Luke Fehrman, Blake Ewaskey, Nick Gillespie) defeated the field of 30+ schools by 7 seconds and posted the fastest time in Pennsylvania this season by 3 seconds, while the Bucks “B” relay (Carter Laatsch, Owen Shields, Eric Ojert, and Christian Crabtree) ran the 8th fastest time of any of the 1500 high schools in Pennsylvania this season!
On tired legs, Katona, Fehrman, and Ewaskey then joined Alan Zlotin to post the 5th fastest time in Pennsylvania this season in the 4x400 meter relay.
Even more impressive, Katona, Fehrman, and Ewaskey then returned for a third event to rejoin Nick Gillespie and post the 2nd fastest time in Pennsylvania this season in the Sprint Medley Relay.
The Bucks return to action on January 26th on Staten Island at the hypercompetitive Ocean Breeze Invitational.
