Penguin's Raft
4th Week of October
#GOPENGUINS #PositiveSignThursday
Dear Moraine Families,
WOW! I am humbled by all the outpouring from Principal Appreciation Week! Thank you to our Staff Appreciation Committee and all of our families that reached out. Whether it was a fist bump at arrival, celebrating our "plaid" Monday, a top 10 list, or any number of other ways - my heart is full!
Being the principal at Moraine Elementary is an incredible privilege. The work of preparing our children to positively impact the world is equally a blessing and a worthy challenge. As educators, we get to make a difference by helping children and that opportunity is one we don't take for granted!
From working with top tier educators, to our supportive families, and most importantly, an awe-inspiring group of students, it is truly a pleasure to serve our community. Thank you for the opportunity to partner with you each and every day.
With deep gratitude,
Joe Reimann
Proud Principal of Moraine Elementary

Practicing listening as a family has a large number of benefits and is an easy one to add into daily conversation with your child. Check out the monthly activity below to try with your family!
Halloween celebrations will take place at Moraine on Monday, October 31st, with our parade through North Beacon Woods beginning at 9:30am. If you are signed up to volunteer at your child's classroom party, you need to have a current ICHAT form on file. Students can either wear their costume to school or be able to put it on over their clothes to avoid congestion in the bathroom areas.
Please follow these guidelines when planning your child's costume:
- Please make sure the costume is weather appropriate (students will go outside for recess)
- Students are responsible for their costumes not causing a problem during learning time.
- Face make-up, hairspray, etc. must be applied at home.
- No fake weapons of any kind are allowed at school.
- No fake blood and no scary costumes (if it would scare a kindergartener, please don’t wear it!)
The Halloween Parade route will take us outdoors and therefore, will only take place if the weather cooperates. There is no Plan B if inclement weather. The route will take us through North Beacon Woods and an offsite permission slip will be sent home next week!

Meet Bailey!
In the past, Northville Public Schools has utilized therapy dogs for special events or to signify specific occasions. We recognize the positive impact therapy dogs can have on our students' emotional wellbeing. Understanding the benefits of therapy dogs, we will be piloting a therapy dogs program across all our elementary buildings.
Meet Bailey! Bailey is a 2.5 year old Golden Retriever. He came from Indiana. Bailey's favorite pastime is to have people pet him and that is why he makes a great therapy dog. He also loves playing with his big sister, Bella, another Golden Retriever, and his little brother, Quigley, a black lab puppy.
Some other things that he loves to do are chase squirrels and chipmunks. He also loves to eat rocks and sticks, although our handler tries to stop him! He also LOVES to ride in the car and sometimes he refuses to get out of the car. Bailey will visit Moraine (on a leash with their handlers) Moraine 2-4 times each month.
If you have a student who is allergic or uncomfortable being around dogs, please let us know no later than Sunday, October 23rd by filling out this form and they will be identified as a student who should not interact with the therapy dog. You ONLY need to fill out this form if you are opting your child out of the therapy dog piloting program.

Steam Donations
Thank you all SO MUCH for sending in the various recyclables and supplies we use often in the Makerspace for STEAM! At this time, we do not need any more toilet paper/paper towel rolls or egg cartons....we have more than enough!! We'd love to continue collecting bottle caps and lids of any kind, beads, buttons, and fabric scraps. If you think of anything else, please send us an email at either chenowethki@northvilleschools.org or davismd@northvilleschools.org first and we'll let you know if we could use it.
Thanks again for all of your support of our program!

PTA News
We are still at 2/3 of our $15,000 goal for our Penguin Pledge with around 32% of our families donating. Thank you so much to those who have already made the pledge and for valuing the contribution the PTA makes to the school. To those who have yet to give, don't delay in making your contribution and investing in your child! Go to https://app.memberhub.gives/moraineelem/Campaign/Details to donate today. The PTA relies heavily on meeting the Penguin Pledge goal to keep our events and activities costs at a minimum.

A Message From Mr. Reimann About Attendance
Did you know that school attendance is essential beginning in kindergarten. Sometimes we don’t think that it is as important as good attendance because "kids are really flexible", but actually, the opposite is true! Students struggle when they are out of routine and don't have consistent boundaries.
- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause some children to fall behind in school.
- How many absences are too many? Chronic absence is defined as 18 days a year—or just 2 days a month.
- Missing 10 percent or about 18 days of the school year in kindergarten can lower achievement in 1st grade and, for some students, through 5th grade.
- Students can still fall behind if they keep missing just a day or two every few weeks.
- Students missing school frequently decreases social awareness and relationship skills: both important for student mental health!
Getting back into the habit of daily attendance matters more than ever as we recover from the pandemic. Going to school is an opportunity for your student to:
- Build routines that help reduce stress.
- Connect to their friends and teachers.
- Engage in learning.
Check out these great tips for setting a solid foundation for regular attendance:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Don’t let your child stay home unless he/she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop some backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
Let Grow Project!
Northville Council of PTAs present the Let Grow Project!
When Adults Step Back, Kids Step Up
At Let Grow, we believe today’s kids are smarter and stronger than our culture gives them credit for.
Treating them as physically and emotionally fragile is bad for their future — and ours.
Let Grow is making it easy, normal and legal to give kids the independence they need to grow into capable, confident, and happy adults.
