We wish a Happy Ramadan, which begins March 22nd, to those families who observe. If your child is fasting and would like an alternate space so they do not have to be in the cafeteria during their scheduled lunch time, please email Mrs. Beth Shields (Elizabeth_Shields@hcpss.org) and/or another member of our student support team will work with your child to find a suitable alternative activity.

Here is a copy of the MAP presentation from the March 8 PTA Meeting. A few great questions were posed at the meeting. Answers to these questions are included in the presentation.

We are halfway through March into Reading. SGA has received over 500 reading coupons. We have two weeks left to reach our goal of 1,600 coupons. Please keep reading Falcons! If you need additional coupons, please see Mrs. Ciliberti.

There will be two more Spirit Days in the month of March. The first is Maryland Day, which is this Friday, March 24th. If possible, please wear something related to Maryland like a crab or colors related to Maryland like yellow, red, or black. The second Spirit Day is Friday, March 31st, which is Comfy, Cozy Day. Wear comfy clothing, bring a blanket or stuffed animal, a favorite book, and get ready to read. Remember all the Read-a-thon coupons are due on this day!

We are striving for 100% participation by our FES families to help shape the next steps for our school. Currently we are at 2%. Let's see this percentage increase- your voice is important in helping to improve our efforts!

In Howard County, all schools will be partaking in the Educational Equity Survey. This is part of our school improvement process, and we are asking families to provide input about their equity priorities at FES. Please use the link below to complete the HCPSS Indicators of Educational Equity Survey. We use this data, along with other school data, as part of our school improvement process. This survey is anonymous and available in multiple languages. If you have children at more than one school, please complete one survey per school.

If your child is in 3rd-5th grade and interested in joining a club, check out your child's grade level Canvas page. There you will find descriptions of each club as well as permission slips.

The Fulton Regional Early Childhood Center (RECC) prekindergarten programs are making preparations for classes for the upcoming 2023-24 school year. These classes include children with and without disabilities. The program’s focus is helping all children develop communication, literacy, math, problem solving, motor, and social skills. Parents of children who will be 3 by September 1st, applications are available and being accepted currently. Additional information can be found in this flyer.

In alignment with Maryland’s Blueprint for the Future, new applications for students turning 4 by September 1 will not be available or accepted for the Learning Together Program. The Howard County Public School System continues to offer a prekindergarten program for income eligible children who will be four years old by September 1. **Book Fair Thank You’s and How We’re Spending Money Raised**
We wanted to shout thank you to everyone who made the book fair and book drive possible and successful!

First of all, THANK YOU to the organizers (both parent volunteers and media staff - see photos) who transformed the media center into a bookstore! You not only ensured we had trained volunteers for all 33 hours the book fair was open, but you were there for the entirety yourselves. You PLANNED and EXECUTED flawlessly - you organized, lifted, promoted, bagged, tidied, filtered out toys in the shop to ensure our kids were getting books, cashiered —all the things— and our kids LOVED it!

Thank you to those who came in to volunteer and helped kids pick books out, figure out how much they could buy (including taxes), and so much more!

SoOo Many BOOKS!!
As a result of this fundraiser, our media center will be able to pick out a shipment of new and refreshed books! And, because we were so successful (FES knows how to shop)- every teacher gets to add to their classroom library too!!!

Activities like last month’s River House Pizza Co. fundraiser helped support initiatives such as our quarterly playground equipment refresh, replacing damaged/lost/worn hula hoops, basketballs and jump ropes!

The PTA has some very exciting events coming up this spring!

HCPSS Extended School Year S.O.A.R (Social Opportunities and Relationships) is searching for peer role models during the July 5 - July 28 session. Students in elementary and middle school who attend ESY SOAR focus on social skills identified through the ESY IEP process. If you are interested, please review this SOAR Peer Mentor Parent Letter .

The River Hill High School Boosters are sponsoring summer camps at River Hill High School. The camps are designed to help young athletes improve their fundamental athletic skills. Weekly camps begin on June 12th. Over thirty different camps are offered this summer, including football, tennis, soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, weight training, wrestling, Allied sports, Youth sports, pickleball, and dance. We also offer an Art camp and two different Video Production camps. Camp schedule and registration can be found at www.riverhill.org.

Do you have a piglet? Or know someone who has a piglet? As part of our March into Reading, we are trying to read 1,600 books by March 31st. If the students meet this goal, then Dr. Burks will kiss a farm animal. And if we exceed this goal by at least 100, Mrs. Ciliberti will also kiss a farm animal.

If you have a piglet or another farm animal that will hold still for just a minute to receive a kiss from Dr. Burks, please email Dr. Burks at tanisha_burks@hcpss.org.

State law requires that all public schools in Maryland survey students about school climate. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of each school’s learning environment so that schools can promote a climate that supports student learning.

All 5th grade students have or will be taking the Maryland School Survey during regular school hours in technology class. The survey asked students about topics such as student engagement, interactions with adults and with other students in the school, the school environment, bullying, and safety. The survey did not ask about a student’s personal experiences, and students were not asked to provide any information that might violate their privacy.

The survey is confidential and school personnel will not have access to the responses of specific students. The responses your child provided will be combined with the responses from other students in the school, and results will be reported for each school and district.

We are eager to receive this very important information about your student’s school and about schools across the state.
