Highlight on Math!/Destacados en Matemáticas
6th grade Builds Higher Thinking Skills
In 6th grade, math students have been working on building higher level thinking and collaboration. Students work in random groups using white boards to solve thinking tasks and practice problem solving (see photo). Our current unit is Rates and Ratios.
6o Grado Desarrolla Grandes Habilidades de Pensamiento
En sexto grado, los estudiantes de matemáticas han estado trabajando en construir un nivel superior de pensamientos y colaboración. Los estudiantes trabajan en grupos aleatorios usando pizarrones para resolver problemas de pensamiento y practicar resolución de problemas (ver foto). Nuestra unidad actual es Tasas y Proporciones.
7th Grade Math Solves Equations
In 7th grade math students have been wrapping up their algebra units, where they solve equations and inequalities. Students have then been transitioning into working with ratios! Students are analyzing relationships to determine if they are proportional, and displaying these relationships in various ways (tables, graphs, equations, etc.). Students also took our Winter MAP test to see if they showed growth from the beginning of the year. Both Mrs. Praska and Mrs. Bell are very proud of some of the growth our students have already made this year!
Los estudiantes de Séptimo Resuelven Ecuaciones
En la clase de matemáticas de séptimo grado los estudiantes han estado terminando sus unidades de álgebra, donde resuelven problemas de ecuaciones y desigualdades. Los estudiantes han estado haciendo la transición para trabajar con proporciones! Los estudiantes están analizando las relaciones para determinar si son proporcionales, y muestran estas relaciones de varias maneras (tablas, gráficas, ecuaciones, etc.) Además los estudiantes tomaron el examen de invierno MAP para ver si mostraron crecimiento desde el comienzo del año escolar. Ambas, la Sra. Praska y la Sra. Bell están muy orgullosas del crecimiento de algunos estudiantes desde el comienzo del año!
8th grade Works on Linear Equations
In 8th grade math, students graphed linear equations, solved multi-step equations, and rewrote equations and formulas. The equations in a system describe a relationship between two variables, such as the cost of an adult ticket and the cost of a student ticket. Students will study algebraic methods of solving systems, substitution and elimination. Students should understand that they can use any of the methods, and that even within a particular method there are different ways to solve a system.
Octavo grado Trabaja en Ecuaciones Lineales
En la clase de matemáticas de octavo grado, los estudiantes hicieron gráficas de ecuaciones lineales, resolvieron ecuaciones de varios pasos, y re escribieron ecuaciones y fórmulas. Las ecuaciones en un sistema describen la relación entre dos variables, como el costo de un ticket de adulto y el costo de un ticket para estudiante. Los estudiantes van a estudiar métodos de álgebra de resolución de sistemas, sustitución y eliminación. Los estudiantes deben entender que pueden usar cualquiera de los métodos, y que incluso dentro de un método particular hay diferentes maneras de resolver un sistema.

Lady Knights A Team Wins Final Game
The Knights played the All-Stars of Hulstrom on December 7th. It was a great team effort from both A and B teams. The A team came away with a win for our final regular season game. Go Knights!
Las Chicas Knights del Grupo A Ganan el Juego Final
Las chicas Knight jugaron el partido All-Stars en Hulstrom el 7 de diciembre. Fue un gran esfuerzo de equipo de ambos equipos A y B. El equipo A ganó la final de la temporada regular. Vamos Knights!
Mariachi Band Performs at Local School
The Mariachi band performed December 7th at North Star Elementary Math Night. The band had a few small performances. Mr. Stopperan and the students had a blast (see photo)!

La banda de Mariachis se presentó el 7 de diciembre en la escuela primaria North Star para su noche de matemáticas. Los mariachis tuvieron una pequeña presentación. El Sr. Stopperan y los estudiantes se divirtieron bastante (ver foto)!
Mariachi Band Entertains Leadership Team
On Friday, December 16th, our 8th grade Mariachi Band performed traditional mariachi music for the Five Star Leadership meeting. Students had a lot of fun playing for Adams Twelve employees (see photos).
La Banda de Mariachis Entretiene al Equipo de Liderazgo
El viernes 16 de diciembre nuestra banda de Mariachis de octavo grado tocó música de mariachi tradicional para la reunión de Liderazgo FIve Star. Los estudiantes se divirtieron mucho tocando para los empleados de Adams 12 (ver fotos)
Latinos in Action/Latinos en Acción
Winter Loteria Night - On Tuesday, December 12 the Leadership students hosted their second Loteria and BINGO Family Night. Everyone enjoyed delicious enchiladas, a musical performance, and, of course, games and prizes!
Canned Food Drive and Candy Grams - At the time the newsletter went to press, NGMS students had already donated over 100 cans! Donations are going to a local food bank to support our community.
Candy grams “purchased” with donated canned goods will be delivered the last week of school.
Noche de Lotería de Invierno- El martes, 12 de diciembre los estudiantes de liderazgo organizaron la segunda noche familiar de lotería y bingo. Todos disfrutaron de deliciosas enchiladas, presentación musical y juegos y premios por supuesto!
Colecta de alimentos enlatados y bastones de dulce- en el momento que se publicó el boletín, los estudiantes de NGMS ya habían donado más de 100 latas! Las donaciones irán a un banco de comida local para apoyar a nuestra comunidad…
Los bastones de dulce “comprados” con las donaciones de latas se distribuyen la última semana de escuela.
Sources of Strength/Fuentes de fuerza
Our Peer Leaders are starting our Trusted Adults Campaign by discovering the “ingredients” that make a trusted adult in their lives. We have done this by creating “recipes” that will be shared with the school community! It is important for each of our Knights to have at least one Trusted Adult in their lives to count on.
We encourage parents and staff to think about how they can connect with adolescents in their lives in a way that builds up trust with them! Here are some ways to be a trusted adult:
Listen with compassion, rather than judgment
Listen to understand, rather than offering unsolicited advice
Hold confidentiality, unless someone’s safety is at risk
Keep the best interests of the child in mind

Our Knights’ PATH Store will be opening at lunches on Fridays starting in January! Students can now save their PATH slips to spend them at the store! Nuestros líderes pares comenzarán una nueva campaña ‘adultos confiables’ descubriendo los “ingredientes” que hacen a un adulto alguien confiable. Hemos hecho esto creando “recetas” que compartiremos con la comunidad de la escuela! Es importante que cada uno de nuestros Knights tengan al menos un adulto de confianza en sus vidas en quien puedan contar.
¡Animamos a los padres y al staff de la escuela a pensar sobre cómo conectar con los adolescentes en sus vidas de una manera que genere confianza con ellos! Aquí hay algunas maneras en las que se puede ser un adulto de confianza:
Escuche con compasión, en lugar de juzgar.
Escuche para entender, en vez de dar consejos no solicitados.
