Sam Houston Counseling Newsletter
December 1st, 2023
Dear Hurricane Families,
It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the first semester and are anxiously anticipating the upcoming winter holidays. We truly hope you are finding creative ways to remain connected with extended family and loved ones. Connections are even more important during the holiday season. We cannot wait to see what 2024 has in store for all of us. Wishing you and your families a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year!

COUNSELING SERVICES
What services do Sam Houston School counselors provide?
Professional School Counselors are available at Sam Houston High School to provide a Comprehensive Developmental Guidance Program and services for all students in the areas of:
Academic Counseling
Our counselors meet with every student at Sam Houston High School to understand their individual needs. Counselors work diligently on tasks such as course selection, schedule modification, credit acquisition and review, teacher conflict, and class performance.
Social and Emotional Counseling
Social counseling includes helping students deal with everything from anger issues and bullying to death of a loved one. While our school counselors aren't intended to be mental health therapists with on-going caseloads, they can be very effective as short-term therapists.
College Counseling
College counseling requires researching and learning about prospective colleges for our SHHS students. SHHS counselors and College Advisors offer suggestions based upon students needs, interests, and career goals. Guidance is offered from the start of the application process through finding financial aid.
Students are welcome to stop by their counselor's office for anything they need to discuss. Our doors are always open!
School Counselors are meeting with 9th-11th grade students one on one to review transcript information, gauge students needs, discuss resources/supports and connect opportunities with their interest. Students will be seen before the end of 1st semester.
Communication Protocol:
#1 Speak Directly to the Teacher
All students are encouraged to express their concerns directly to the teacher. If you as a parent are concerned about an issue involving your child's education, classroom experience, or grade go right to the source and contact the teacher. Staff emails are found on Frontline or Sam Houston's website.
Teachers make every effort to get back to you as quickly as possible, but it may take up to 24 hours. Please be patient. If you do not receive a return email or call within 24 hours, try again. After that, proceed to the next step.
#2: Counselors
If you have not heard back from the teacher in a reasonable amount of time, contact the counseling department.
If you wish to discuss specific academic or social-emotional concerns, contact the counseling department. **Please note that counselors do not handle any discipline-related issues or teacher complaints. For those issues contact your child's AP.
#3: Assistant Principals
If the issue is still a concern, you may contact your child's assistant principal.
