MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Atkinson Families,
This little kitty has been our mascot this week, telling our students and staff that we're doing a great job with a furry thumps up!
Thank you to those who joined me for the Parent Coffees this week, our next ones will be on November 16th and 17th.
Our next safety drill will be the International ShakeOut on October 19th. This will consist of an earthquake drill, followed by an evacuation drill. Schools and businesses all over the country and the world participate in this drill. Oregon lies at a convergent continental boundary where two tectonic plates are colliding, which means our chances of having an earthquake are high, thus the need to practice what to do in case we are at school when one happens.
Hope you have a wonderful, warm weekend, and we'll see you on Monday!
Debbie Armendariz
Atkinson Elementary School Principal
NO SCHOOL — FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13

LIBRARY NEWS: AUTHOR VISIT
UPCOMING EVENTS
We will be having an author visit next Monday! Jorge Cham is the best-selling and Emmy-nominated creator of "PHD Comics," the popular ongoing comic strip about life (or the lack thereof) in Academia. He is the co-creator and co-Executive Producer of the celebrated animated series “Elinor Wonders Why,” which airs on PBS Kids and in 78 countries around the world. He is the co-author of the award-winning book “We Have No Idea” (and its follow-up “FAQ-U”), and the co-host of the iHeart Radio show “Daniel and Jorge Explain the Universe.” He is also the co-founder of PHDtv, a video science and discovery outreach collaborative, and the author of the upcoming books “Oliver's Great Big Universe” and “Out of Your Mind.” Jorge earned his Ph.D. in Robotics from Stanford University and was an Instructor and Research Associate at Caltech from 2003–2005. He is originally from Panama.
Cosmos meets “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” in “Oliver’s Great Big Universe,” an original illustrated middle-grade fiction series that blends science with narrative from the Emmy Award–nominated creator of PBS’s “Elinor Wonders Why.” With laugh-out-loud humor and cartoon-style illustrations from the bestselling writer and creator of PHD Comics, Jorge Cham, “Oliver’s Great Big Universe” is a STEAM-themed, diary-style series following an 11-year-old who’s taking on the whole universe—if he can survive middle school first.
Here is a link if you would like to order a book. I will be picking them up this weekend. Please order any copies that you would like to have signed by the author by Friday night.
