Word Wall Words
Please help your child learn to recognize the sight words. These are words that they will come across frequently as they read and will want to write them as an author. You can, of course, simply use the flash cards that were provided. However, your child will enjoy other means to learn these words. Below are three suggestions on fun activities:
- Write each word in several colors.
- Create words with Play-doh.
- Provide a list of words and write each word on a Post-it. Have your child go on a hunt in the house for the words.
Literacy Workstations
Braelyn and Joel are matching lowercase and uppercase letters.
Word Work
While working on an interactive writing the students practice letter formation. They also have an opportunity to write words. We "like" how they wrote on their dry erase boards!
Writers Workshop
During Writers Workshop we are labeling the characters and other features in our stories. We are identifying the who, what, where, and when in our stories.
Shared Reading
During Shared Reading we are noticing the patterns in the stories and learning to tap once under each word.
Math
In math we have continued to work on greater than, less than and equal to using a variety of approaches. The students were asked to make a group that was greater than a written number, instead of being shown a grouping of cubes. Bessie-Grace did a great job!
Math Workstations
Math Workstations are such fun! Grace is making numbers out of Play-doh.
Reading Workshop
As readers we are building our reading muscles. The children are enjoying quiet time to read independently. Encourage your child to read at home too.
Science
This week was fire safety week. We learned about smoke detectors, making an escape plan should there be a fire at home, dialing 911, stop-drop-roll, and about firemen and their equipment. We did an experiment with candles. The students had to guess which candle would go out first - the uncovered candle, the candle with a small jar over it, or the candle with the large jar. Fire needs oxygen so the small jarred candle went out first, followed by the large jar. Most of them predicted correctly!
A-Z Books
Make sure your child reads their weekly Reading A-Z books nightly, Monday-Thursday. This should take less than 5 minutes a night. Your child will benefit greatly and begin to recognize words. Please leave the bright orange log in the folder and initial it to let us know your child read.
Walk to School Day
On Wednesday we celebrated “Walk to School Day”. Families gathered at the Cubesmart parking lot and walked to school together.
Why do we participate in this nationwide event?
There are many reasons but to promote ways to have a cleaner environment, healthy habits, road safety, and building community within our school. Learn more at: https://www.walkbiketoschool.org/learn-more/why-walkbike/
