Lots of remembering our historical moments over the past two weeks...
28 October and the NZ Wars
October 23rd, 2019, By Dylan Owen
Who doesn’t love Labour Day? First celebrated in 1890, the fourth Monday in October (28 October this year) marks the first long weekend holiday after what seems an unending winter. Its origins are now part of our mythology. Thanks to Samuel Parnell and his one-man strike, our 8-hour workday is another New Zealand world-first.
However, another event, now commemorated on 28 October, has increasingly been in the news. Its memorable title — Te Pūtake o te Riri, He Rā Maumahara — lies at the heart of our history, our cultural identity, and what we must remember.
Remember remember 5th November ... (NZ History)
On 5 November, about 1600 volunteers and Constabulary Field Force troops marched on Parihaka. Several thousand Māori sat quietly on the marae as singing children greeted the force led by Native Minister John Bryce. The Whanganui farmer had fought in the campaign against Tītokowaru (see 9 June) and viewed Parihaka as a ‘headquarters of fanaticism and disaffection’. Bryce ordered the arrest of Parihaka’s leaders, the destruction of much of the village and the dispersal of most of its inhabitants. The Sim Commission which investigated these events in the 1920s was told that women were raped by troops, with some bearing children as a result.
Pressmen, officially banned from the scene by Bryce, were ambivalent about the government’s actions, but most colonists approved of them. Te Whiti and Tohu were detained without trial for 16 months. The government managed to delay for several years the publication in New Zealand of the official documents relating to these events.
Armistice Day (NZ History)
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month was the moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front in 1918, following the signing of an armistice. The signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany was celebrated in many cities and towns around New Zealand.
KAHUI ATHLETIC DAY - TUESDAY 15th NOV
The Kāhui Ako athletics day is being held next Tuesday 15th November from 9.30am-2.30pm. This is a great opportunity for the students to be part of a community event, amongst other schools.
Year 0-3 will be participating in Tabloid events on the outer fields of the TET Stadium, for the morning. They will be transported to and from school by bus.
Year 4-8 will be participating in the athletics events inside the TET Stadium, Inglewood. They will be walking to and from the venue.
This event is for ALL our students to attend and participate in. If you are attending the event to support your child please let your class teacher know. If your child will NOT be attending school on this day, please let your class teacher or the office know.
There will also be a bbq available to purchase a sausage. Unsure on the cost of these as yet.

Pending Enrolments
Out of Zone Application For Enrolment
Enrolment at Inglewood School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available on the school website or from the school office.
The board is now inviting applications from parents who wish to enrol their children at Inglewood Primary School starting within Term 1 2023.
All applications must be received by 3pm Monday 21 November 2022 for Term 1 2023. If a ballot for out of zone places is required, it will be held on Wednesday 23 November 2022. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.
The board has determined that 30 places from Year 1-8 are likely to be available for out-of-zone students within Term 1 2023. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. Parents of students who live within the home zone and intend enrolling their child at any time during the year should notify the school to assist the school to plan appropriately.
The application form for enrolment is available from the school website, or from the school office.
Please note, that if the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.
A further ballot for Term 1 2023 will be published January 2023.
