What a crazy end to the school year. I hope that you all have been able to physically, emotionally and mentally safe. I do have to admit that I wasn’t sure of my saneness a couple of times. I am way too much of an extrovert!

Happy School Nurse Day. You all are amazing and I am so proud to be able to say that I am a SCHOOL NURSE. The governor has proclaimed May 6th as School Nurse Day in Texas. Please be sure to read the proclamation that he signed.

NASN held a media contest earlier this year. Texas had 1 honorable mention and 2 of the main winners. NASN will be posting their videos during Nurses Week. They are schedule to be shown on May 4th, May 5th and the last one on May 6th. You will want to watch these. Ladies we are so very proud of you.

I know that a lot of us are worried about what is going to happen next school year. NASN is in the process of developing a ‘Return to School’ plan. The plan will be shared with all once it is finalized. NASN also has a petition on social media requesting the hiring of 10,000 school nurses. They feel that now, more than ever, we need a school nurse in every school – All day, Every day. Wouldn’t that be great?!?

There are also a couple of surveys, about COVID19, that are asking for the opinion of school nurses. One is from NASN and the other is from the University of Delaware Disaster Research Center. These are both very important surveys and I need all of you to fill them out. There is also a survey from DSHS asking if you would be willing to help with contact tracing of COVID19. It was sent out with the Friday beat and is on our webpage but we have provided the links in this newsletter.

I never would have dreamed that a school year could end the way this one is going to. With the lifting of restrictions I ask you all to be smart. You are a health professional and you know what you need to do to stay healthy. This is our opportunity to lead by example. This is our opportunity as School Nurse to SHINE.

With May just around the corner, Mental Health America (MHA) is proud to announce that our highly anticipated May is Mental Health Month toolkit is FINALLY HERE!

Since 1949, Mental Health America and our affiliates across the country have led the observance of May is Mental Health Month by reaching millions of people through the media, local events and screenings.

We welcome other organizations to join us in spreading the word that mental health is something everyone should care about by using the May is Mental Health Month toolkit materials and conducting awareness activities.

While 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health.

In 2020, our theme of Tools 2 Thrive will provide practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase resiliency regardless of the situations they are dealing with.

We always intended to focus MHA’s Mental Health Month toolkit this year on resiliency, offering tools to thrive at any time. We now believe that these tools even those that we all may have to adapt for the short term because of social distancing will be more useful than ever.

Our toolkit includes sample materials for communications and social media as well as printable handouts on the following topics:

The University of Delaware Disaster Research Center is conducting a study on the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are writing to ask your assistance in learning more about the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are interested in learning about the experiences of a broad range of health care workers. We especially hope to learn about the experiences of your membership at work, the types of information and support they received, and how others in and outside of their workplace may have been treated during this time period. Findings from the study will be shared with the wider community and may help future planning to similar events. Due to the intense demands on medical personnel right now because of the coronavirus pandemic, we have decided to move our next RN to MSN cohort to the August 17, 2020 term. However, students who intend to enroll in the August RN to MSN term are encouraged to begin with general education classes with the May 18, 2020 term. PLUS, you will still have the opportunity to receive one of 15 half-tuition scholarships and may use the scholarship toward those general education classes. The President's Endowment Challenge: Double Down for Data is inspired by the "year of the 2." This fund is launched in 2020. In 2020, we celebrate the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale and an NASN president serves a 2-year term.

Funders who support NASN's programming want to see school nurse data. Collecting, analyzing, and disseminating school nurse data takes dollars.
