What's Happening In Our Classrooms?
Preschool
During the month of December, preschoolers will learn about Families. They will explore family and animal homes. The children will be introduced to Lively Letters m, n, and l and practice letters p, b, t, d, f, v, k, g, q, a and o. They will continue to practice subitizing (looking at objects and knowing how many there are without counting) up to 5 and using objects for putting together and taking away up to 5. Preschoolers will continue to practice showing numbers 1-10 on their rekenreks. We will have fun using Braidy (our story grammar marker) to help us retell stories. The children are developing friendships and learning how to cooperate with others.

Kindergarten
Kindergarten students continue to work and grow as learners in ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies through the month of December.
In ELA, Kindergarten students have begun a unit about what makes a community. During this unit, we will read books about the people and places in a community, and the ways in which we all work together to make a community strong. Children will write letters to teach others about our community, practice identifying and producing rhyming words, identify story elements such as character, setting, and topic/main idea. In small reading groups, they will engage in foundational reading skills such as blending and segmenting sounds, sound spelling, and apply those skills into word reading.
In math, the kindergarten students will begin a unit on Geometry. They will learn to identify, describe, analyze, compare, and create two-dimensional shapes. Students will look for shapes in the world around them, for example, they may look at a tissue box and say it looks like a rectangle. Pattern block activities will also be used, as a way to support the students developing spatial awareness.
In Science and Social Studies, students have been engaging in a Unit of Construction. In this unit, students explore and participate in play centers while they learn concepts of stability. Read-Alouds are used to support students understanding of what it takes to build structures, and what makes structures strong and sound. Students will also learn about different types of buildings and structures, as well as different types of building materials.
Mrs. Schindel's Kindergarten class disguised their "Tom" turkeys so they don't get eaten for Thanksgiving! These creative minds disguised their turkeys as: a princess, a bunny, a purple cat, a volcano and a police officer.
Ms. Giguere introduced the Ram stuffy as a class mascot. The children were so excited about having the Ram in class!
First Grade
First graders continue to work on growing their skills as readers, writers, and math thinkers!
In ELA, we will be working on blending and decoding words with consonant digraphs. We will be starting a new reading module all about being Better Together. Our stories will relate to the big idea of doing our best and getting along with others. We will really be looking to strengthen our understanding and practice of our Woodland CARES.
In writing, we will finish our nonfiction booklets about animals. Then, we will learn to write another type of informational text in which we will teach others HOW-TO do something.
In math, we are continuing to strengthen our fluency in our addition and subtraction facts through 10. Students will practice showing their thinking and sharing their strategies with peers.
Second Grade
In ELA, second graders will be learning about stories that teach valuable life lessons. We will read many kinds of stories, from classic fairy tales to modern retellings, and even an informational text about how to appreciate a story. Children will also write a story about an imaginary friend or place.
Our current math unit focuses on standard units of length: centimeters, meters, inches, and feet. Students will examine how different measuring tools represent length units, learn how to use the tools, gain experience in measuring and estimating the length of objects, and solve one- and two- step story problems involving addition and subtraction of lengths. At the end of the unit, students will learn that line plots can be used to represent numerical data. They will create and interpret line plots that show measurement data and use them to answer questions about the data.
Our next unit in science is our energy mini-unit. Students will investigate the effects of friction on the temperature and speed of objects that rub against each other. These investigations will be conducted through hands-on, inquiry-based experiments.
“Twas the night before Thanksgiving, and all through the classroom, students were enjoying their lunch in the Camping Day tents, while listening to a story.”
Balloons Over Woodland
The students in Ms. Stearns's class created their own balloons based on the book Balloons Over Broadway which they had read in class.

Box Tops for Education
Dear Families,
Are you looking for a quick and easy way to support our school?
Box Tops for Education has been around for over 25 years, and it really can make a difference.
In fact, the Box Tops program has helped give almost one billion dollars to schools since 1996.
The Box Tops app gives participants the ability to earn for any school across the country with just the touch of a button. Plus, the Box Tops app allows you to search for schools that could use a little extra help, so you can help give students in low-income schools the opportunity to succeed.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Buy participating products and use the Box Tops app to scan your store receipt. The app identifies eligible products and earnings are credited to your designated school online. Even if you’re shopping online or doing grocery pickup, you can still submit your
digital or email receipt with the Box Tops app and earn. Twice a year, our school gets a check!
See a list of participating products at
Box Tops earnings really add up, and the more people that participate, the bigger the impact we can make. So let’s give our teachers the support they need and give more kids the opportunity to succeed. Together, we can help make a big difference.
