EDHS Community Update
February 2024

Miners in the Spotlight
FFA Week - Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. It is a time to share what FFA is and the impact it has on members every day. Our FFA program hosted activities and events throughout last week at EDHS. There were dress-up days, chicken poop bingo, a kickball competition against RHS, and a Kiss the Cow fundraiser. Great Job, FFA!
Jazz Band - Our EDHS Jazz Band had an amazing performance at the Mid Valley Jazz Festival. The judges praised the technical ability of the band. Chase Reiboldt was granted an Outstanding Excellence in Jazz Performance.

EDHS Tier 1 Expectations
Our Tier 1 focus for this semester is student engagement. Our teachers are working hard to engage our students in high levels of learning.
Junior AVID - On Friday, our AVID juniors engaged in collaborative groups in a book club lesson. I watched students share their reading artifacts in a group and engage in academic discussion.
I learned that our AVID juniors are currently reading The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. Each Wednesday, book club members are required to bring their book, notes on the section in a note-taking style of their choosing, and a weekly artifact to share. The book club host for the week is required to bring 5 discussion questions that they wrote and to lead the conversation during book club.
On Fridays, students receive unstructured time to work on their reading notes and artifacts.
The artifacts throughout the unit have been:
Blackout poetry
Racing Research - students chose an article that helped them better understand the main character (who is a racecar driver). They had to use the full AVID critical reading process and bring it to the book club.
Body Biographies (in the image below)
Book Talk - students choose a book that has a similar theme as our book and write a sales pitch to share with their book club
***Mrs. Jacobsma uses UDL principles to plan her lessons. There are multiple means of engagement, representation of resources (visuals, templates), and different options for students to display their learning.
Biology Lab - Mrs. Olson's Biology students demonstrated their understanding of natural selection through a bean lab investigation. Students shared their learning with their lab group, and then in a whole class discussion.
Ag Mechanics - Our Ag Mechanics students in Mr. Brown's class worked on painting and fixing barbeques. It was great to see our students hard at work!
School eNewspaper - The Dig
If you would like to see and hear what is happening at EDHS, then checkout The Dig. Our Journalism students are doing a great job writing about campus news, events, and impactful Miners. Please read the most recent articles. Holden Benavento's article on boy's soccer is one to read.
